Silversea Luxury Cruises To ALANYA

ALANYA
ALANYA

Straddling the past and the present, Alanya, on Turkey’s southern coast, is truly a tale of two cities. The first – an ex Ptolemaic, Seleucid, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman Empire, the second, a modern resort city that attracts sun lovers in their hoards. But whether you are looking for millennia old history or just wanting to relax on the golden sands, Alanya warrants discovery. Alanya’s popularity throughout the ages is undoubtedly due to its strategic position on the Mediterranean basin. View more

The city was on a fast track to becoming a holiday maker’s alternative to the overrun Antalya, and this has not come without its critics. Thankfully, foreign influence stepped in at the right time and ordered a clean-up, resulting in colourfully painted apartment blocks, restoration of the Ottoman district and a number of handsome boutique hotels popping up inside the red-walled citadel. That is not to say that the city is without it happy jumble of shops selling everything from Turkish tea sets to fake Gucci watches. A word of advice – be prepared to haggle! If bargain hunting and sun bathing is not what you are after, the aforementioned citadel is doubt one of the highlights of the city. Here you’ll be thrown into the city’s historic past, which dates from 625 BC, and travels through a variety of empires. The city also has proven ties with Marc Anthony – one of the main beaches is named Cleopatra – but finds in the nearby Karain Cave indicate occupation during the Palaeolithic era as far back as 20,000 BC.

Excursions in ALANYA

Alanya and Dim Caves

Discover the highlights of Alanya on this half day tour.

Alanya Castle

One of the symbols of Alanya - the Alanya castle is standing over the rocky peninsula in the middle of the city. The fortress today is a remain of 13th century Seljuk fortress built after the conquest of Alanya in 1220 by Alaeddin Keykubat I. It is surrounded by 6km long walls, including numerous towers.

Archaeological Museum

The museum consists of two sections devoted to the conservation and display of archaeological and ethnographic artefacts. Exhibited in a separate room is the crowned jewel of Alanya's Archaeological Museum; a very well-preserved bronze statue of Hercules, approximately 20.4 inches (52 centimetres) in height and dating from the 2nd century BCE

Dim Cave

Located 11km away from Alanya, this underground fairyland is home to spectacular stalactite and stalagmite formations with a crystal-clear pool at the deepest depth. A 360m-long walkway leads you through the length of the cave.

Aspendos & Side Antique Sites

Explore the antique cities of Side and Asplendos, during this half-day excursion to the ruins surrounding Alanya.

Departing from the pier an approximate 1-hour and 15-minute drive will bring you to the ancient ruins of Aspendos.

Aspendos

Founded on a hilltop near the Eurymedon River, with the splendid backdrop of the Taurus Mountains, Aspendos was a major port city in the Roman period. The remains seen here date back to that era, although the history of the settlement goes back to the Hittite Empire. During the reign of Marcus Aurelius (161-180 CE) the fantastic theater was built, without a doubt the finest in all of Anatolia. Its façade is stunning and its acoustics are unparalleled. In fact, performances are held here today without the use of microphones. Apart from the theater, Aspendos also features ruins of a stadium, agora and basilica. Nearby the Aspendos theatre is a marvelous aqueduct that used to supply the city, which is veiwable from the road.

Side

From Aspendos a 30-minute drive brings you to Side. The town was founded by Aeolians in the 7th century BCE. 'Side' meant 'pomegranate' in the local language. Until the Roman Imperial period, pomegranate was the symbol used on the coins of Side. It is rumored that Anthony and Cleopatra chose the town for a romantic tryst. The ruins are impressive with many examples of Hellenistic and Roman architecture. The old and the new are insolubly merged and intertwined in Side.

See the theatre, which had a seating capacity of 15,000. It was used in the late Roman Period for gladiator fights as well as theatrical productions. Remains of a monumental gate and a fountain are also located at the entranceway of the ancient theater. Amongst other more prominent ruins are the Agora, the Temple of Athena, the Temple of Apollo and also a Byzantine basilica.

Side Museum and Bath Complex

A huge Roman Hamam was turned into a museum, and hosts the most beautiful archeological pieces of art from region. The interior portion of the Side museum contains many well-preserved statues, including a statue of Hercules in its center, and a nearly complete statue of Apollo. There are also Roman amphorae recovered from Side's waters, statue heads of people and gods, reliefs, and ornate sarcophagi recovered from Side's necropolis. There is also a fragment displaying an inscription in the Sidetan language, a language which has never been deciphered, as well as a display of an ancient Roman grave.

Following this visit, re-join your coach for the return drive to the pier and your awaiting ship.

Sapadere Canyon

Experience the splendid natural beauty of the Sapadere countryside during this panoramic, half-day canyon excursion.

Sapadere Village and Tea

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive to Sapadere. Your first stop is at this small mountain village, which includes a short walk around the area and tea served in the village. Afterward, proceed on-foot for a guided stroll to the nearby canyon.

Sapadere Canyon Nature Trek

Upon arrival, marvel at the delightful nature scenes, waterfalls, rare plants, butterflies, and small animals and birds. Continue walking along the ladders in the canyon, and take in the refreshing clean air. You can also drink the cool, clean water; a treat on hot summer days, as the water reaches a high of 53.6°F (about 12°C) during the warmest time of the year.

Archaeological Museum

Next, re-board your coach for the drive back to Alanya, and a visit to the Archaeological Museum. The museum consists of two sections devoted to the conservation and display of archaeological and ethnographic artefacts. Exhibited in a separate room is the crowned jewel of Alanya's Archaeological Museum; a very well-preserved bronze statue of Hercules, approximately 20.4 inches (52 centimetres) in height and dating from the 2nd century BCE Following your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier.
