Silversea Luxury Cruises À VALLETTA

VALLETTA
VALLETTA

Perched high on the imposing Sciberras Peninsula, Valletta immediately presents its massive, protective walls and vertical bastions to visitors arriving by sea. Rising to 47 metres in places, the fortifications protect lavish palaces, grand domes and illustrious gardens. Built by the Knights of St John on the narrow peninsular, Valletta is a compact, richly historical treasure trove of Baroque wonders. Ascend to reach the restful, flower-filled Upper Barrakka Gardens, where cannons fire and boom in salute at noon each day, sending echoing cracks of noise out across the waves below. View more

Recognised as 2018’s European Capital of Culture, Valletta is a fascinating and dense haven of history and intrigue. A busy, bustling capital, the breathtaking St John’s Cathedral - commissioned in 1572 - is almost concealed among its narrow streets. The relatively modest exterior is counterpointed by a staggeringly opulent, gold-leaf bathed interior, containing a Caravaggio masterpiece - the shadowy vision of the Beheading of St John. Cinematic and magnificent, Valletta has served as a filming location for Game of Thrones - but real epic history abounds on this rocky isle too. From the prehistoric and megalithic sites of the Hypogeum of Paola and Tarxien, to the fascinating War Museum at Fort St Elmo. Mdina also waits nearby, and the former medieval capital is a striking contrast to the island’s main city. Cars are barred from its streets, and it offers endlessly atmospheric old-time wanders. With a strategic positioning in the Mediterranean, Malta is a jewel that many have wrestled for over the centuries. Independence from Britain was finally achieved in 1964, but the close allegiance remains evident, with English recognised as an official language, cars driving on the left, and red post boxes and telephone gleaming in Malta’s sunshine.

Excursions depuis VALLETTA

Game of Thrones

Discover the splendid beauty and filming locales of the popular Game of Thrones series during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion.

San Anton Gardens and Palace, and Mdina and Mdina Gate

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to the San Anton Gardens. Located in Attard, this 16th-century palace is the official residence of the President of Malta, and surrounded by private and public gardens. San Anton Palace has also been featured as a setting in the popular HBO series, Game of Thrones. Following your guided tour, re-board your coach and head to Mdina. The 4,000-year-old capital of Malta, Mdina is a medieval walled town on a hill in the centre of the island, and is known as the 'Silent City'. Mdina and its gorgeous Mdina Gate were also featured in the filming of the Game of Thrones series. During your guided visit, a stop is made at a panoramic viewpoint and some free time is made available to explore your surrounds at your leisure.

Verdala Palace and the Buskett Gardens

Next, re-board your coach and continue on to the Verdala Palace. Since 1987, Verdala Palace has been the official summer residence of the President of Malta, but its origins date back to the 16th century, when it was built on the site of a hunting lodge. The elegant palace is surrounded by the Buskett Gardens, which were used by the Knights of Malta to hunt game, and by Napoleon as a military prison in the 18th century. After a long period of disrepair, the palace was restored and its Buskett Gardens are now open to the public. Following a photo stop here, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 35-minute drive back to the pier.

Gardens of Malta

Enjoy the beauty of the best gardens in Malta during this half-day tour.

Palazzo Parisio and Gardens

Depart quay and drive to the village of Naxxar. Located in the heart of picturesque Naxxar is Palazzo Pariso, this stately home is a place of wonder that begs to be explored. During your visit, discover the intricate nuances of Malta's historic nobility and their enchanting way of life. Touring this stately home offers great insight and sparks the imagination - whether you find yourself seeking inspiration from the grand Ballroom, the detailed Family Chapel or the fabulous walled Gardens and Orangerie, you'll find it. Refreshments will be served in the Gardens [weather permitting] or indoors.

San Anton Gardens

Following this visit, continue your tour with a drive to the Village of Attard for a visit to the San Anton Gardens.

The Gardens of San Anton, open to the public since 1882, are laid out in a formal manner, with graceful walkways, sculptures, ornamental ponds, families of ducks and swans, and a small aviary. They contain a large variety of trees and flowers from around the world, including a variety of palm trees, cypress, jacarandas, araucarias and other exotic plants, some of them over three centuries old. For many years it has been customary for visiting Heads of State to plant a tree in memory of their stay in Malta. The gardens also contain an orangerie, and it was once the practice of incumbent Governors to give baskets of oranges grown in the palace gardens as gifts at Christmas time.

Upper Barracca Gardens

The Upper Barracca Gardens is a public garden that offers a panoramic view of the Grand Harbour. One of Valletta's most beautiful parks, it was created in 1775 on the bastion of St. Peter and Paul. In the park there are several statues, including one from Sir Winston Churchill, and a sculpture by the Maltese sculptor Antonio Sciortino, entitled The Street Boys. Another prominent feature is the neo-classical temple folly at the centre of the park. The garden was the gift of an eighteenth-century Italian knight. It was originally intended to offer recreation to the knights of the Italian langue, or department, of the Order of Saint John.

It is the highest point of the city walls, and thus its bordering terrace offers a clear view over the Grand Harbour and the old towns of Senglea and Vittoriosa, as well as over the shipyard and the lower-lying parts the capital. This terrace area features a number of commemorative plaques, dedicated to, amongst others, the Hungarian revolution of 1956, the Prague spring, Giuseppe Garibaldi and the 50th anniversary of the European Union.

Following this visit, re-join your coach for the short drive to the pier and your awaiting ship.
