Silversea Luxury Cruises À TORSHAVN (Faroe Islands)

Silversea Luxury Cruises - Torshavn, Faroe Islands

Titanic scenery, mist-whipped mountains and staggering oceanic vistas await you here in the Faroe Islands - a far-flung archipelago of immense natural beauty. This remote and isolated gathering of 18 islands – adrift in the far North Atlantic Ocean – is a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and colourful Tórshavn bustles up against the seafront, forming one of the tiniest capital cities in the world. Wander between pretty, half-timbered houses and visit one of the world’s oldest parliament buildings, during your time here. View more

With Viking history swirling too, Torshavn is a quaint, charming and heritage-rich city. Surrounded by thrilling landscapes, and cosy Scandi culture, the Faroe Islands are an envy-inducing, off-the-beaten-track destination. From Torshavn, scatter to your choice of island destinations, or spend time soaking in the storybook appeal and clarity of air in the scenic old town. Pop into local shops or head for restaurants - where you can taste local foods like salt-cured fish and hunks of lamb. See waterfalls plummeting directly into the ocean from vertical cliffs, along with emerald-green carpeted fjords, as you explore these extraordinary, lost islands. Puffins and sea birds relish the island’s craggy sea cliffs and coastline – visit the island of Mykines to see the birds burrowing deep into the steep cliffs to nest. Strap on your hiking boots to rise to the challenge of the mesmerising scenery. Fjords etch into the coastline, and you can encounter peaceful lakes and massive valleys dug out by glaciers. Off-shore, sea stacks totter up out of the swelling, frothy waves.

Hike to Streymoy Sill

Peace, tranquillity and stunning vistas can be enjoyed during this leisurely mile-and-a half (2.5 kilometre) hike that takes you closer to the nature of the Faroe Islands.

Depart Tórshavn by coach and ascend the mountain road glimpsing fjords and distant islands until reaching approximately 216 yards (200 metres) above sea level. From here, embark on a cross-country trek in the company of knowledgeable local guides. The first 216 yards (200 metres) of the hike is strenuous after which you can relax and appreciate the fascinating landscapes as they unfold.

Streymoy Sill

Pause on top of the columnar basalt of Streymoy Sill. This fascinating volcanic formation was sculpted smooth by glaciers and glacial etchings are still visible. Stretching below is the sea with the island of Vagar beyond. In this remote area the ethereal silence is punctuated only by the sounds of nature. Enjoy these magnificent surroundings before returning to the coach. The return to Torshavn is via a tunnel that emerges at the Kaldbakfjord where gentle waterfalls and wandering sheep complete the tranquil picture.

Home Visit with a Faroese Family

Gain an insight in to daily life in the Faroe Islands as well as new friends during this visit to a local family's home.

Home Visit

A Faroese family opens the doors to their home and invites you in. Your hosts will serve light refreshments including coffee, tea, and home baked cake. This visit will give you an excellent opportunity to make acquaintance with locals and to see how a Faroese family lives. Learn the way of life and engage in an enlightening discussion of cultures, economics and heritage.

On your return to the harbour, a stop at a viewpoint overlooking Tórshavn, will allow you a wonderful photo opportunity and the perfect end to this unique intimate experience.

Scenic Faroes & Pancakes

Explore the capital and largest city of the Faroe Islands during this panoramic, half-day sightseeing excursion to Tórshavn and its surrounds.

Tórshavn, Eidi and Funning Viewpoints, and Scenic Bridge

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive north, past idyllic villages, en route to photo stops at the Eidi and Funning viewpoints. During your stops, see 'the only bridge over the Atlantic', as it is sometimes called, which spans the narrow channel of Sundini to connect Eysturoy with the larger island of Streymoy. Because the channel is so narrow, spectacular eddies form at the base of the bridge when the current is running strong with the tide. During your visit, you are invited to walk the short distance, 'over the Atlantic'.

Sea Stacks and Slættaratindur Mountain

Next, re-board your coach, continue past Eidi and cross the mountains to Gjógv Village. Along the way, take in a splendid view of two very distinctive sea stacks known as 'The Giant and the Hag', and pass by the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands, the approximately 2,894-foot-high (about 882-metre-high) Slættaratindur.

Gjógv Village, Pancakes and Tórshavn Viewpoint

Upon arrival in Gjógv Village, see the approximately 617-foot-long (about 188-metre-long) gorge that serves as a natural harbour for fishing boats, and stop for pancakes and coffee at a local guesthouse. Following your visit, re-board your coach and head to the Tórshavn Viewpoint, which overlooks the capital. After a brief photo stop here, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

Silver Shore Privato - Private Van with /Guide - Half Day

Traditional Villages

Enjoy the scenic views and hear the traditions of the villagers in this remote, but beautiful destination during this half-day tour.

Tórshavn Views

Boarding your coach at the harbour across from historic tinganes, the rocky peninsula in Tórshavn harbour where the ancient vikings met. Travel up to the scenic, ridge-top road that runs along the southern part of Streymoy island, pausing above Tórshavn for a photo stop at a viewpoint overlooking this colourful capital city. In the green, sheep pastures above Tórshavn, be on the lookout for stone cairns, which marked the footpaths between villages in olden times.

Leynar

Further north, views of Kaldbak and Kollafjørður fjords open below; stop for a photo opportunity. Winding down into a valley, pass a charming mountain tarn and pause to admire the hand-hewn stone salmon ladders leading to Lake Leynar. Arriving in Leynar, visit the local woodcarver and watch him work or you may wish to take a walk on the Leynar beach.

Kvivik Village

Rejoining your coach, continue your tour with a short drive further west where you discover the colourful village of Kvivik, site of an ancient viking settlement dating from the 10th century. Alongside a pleasant stream, explore the remnants of viking farmhouse and byre and enjoy the tranquility of this peaceful village.

Kollafjørður Church

The next stop will be further south in Kollafjørður where a visit is made to an old Faroese church. This black, wooden built church with its traditional Faroese turf roof is one of nine churches built in the period of 1830 to 1850.

The journey back to Tórshavn takes you through a 1.8-mile (3-kilometre) long tunnel and then along a fjord at sea level. Your scenic drive ends with a return to the pier and your awaiting ship.

Tórshavn the Capital

Enjoy an introduction to this lovely capital city during this half-day excursion.

Torshavn

It began with a Viking "Thing" (original Norse assembly), followed by a market, later it became a thriving town and today it is one of the smallest and most pleasant capital cities in the world. Tórshavn today blends the historical and picturesque with all the features of a modern city. Discover quality restaurants and hotels, conference facilities, interesting museums, discotheques, cinema, live theatre, exhibitions, sports facilities, parks and of course, excellent shopping. The town and the surrounding areas are ideal for window-shopping and pleasant strolls.

Many extended excursions to the rest of the Faroes begin from the harbour. As Tórshavn is located in the centre of the country, the well-developed bus and ferry service can whisk you away to almost every corner of the Faroes and back again the same day.

Tinganes and Skansin

At this historical section of Tórshavn, make a short stop at Skansin to explore the old fort before continuing up to the beautiful Nordic House cultural centre. Drive through the modern sections of the city and before heading back to the harbour, stop briefly at a viewpoint overlooking the capital.

Vestmanna Sea Cliffs

Enjoy a unique perspective on the Faroe Islands' spectacular scenery from both land and sea.

Drive to Vestmanna

Departing the harbor, drive alongside fjords where many waterfalls cascade from cragged, mountains into tranquil waters. Pass through tunnels carved from ancient rock and enjoy magnificent vistas of a lake-filled valley before descending to Vestmanna - a colourful village on the western coast of Streymoy.

Boat Trip along the cliffs

From here, enjoy an unforgettable boat trip with the direction of the current dictating whether you cruise north or south. To the north see ever more dramatic cliffs with sheep grazing high on their grassy tops. At the northernmost point of the journey, enter sea caverns and traverse channels between freestanding rock formations and coastal cliffs where seabirds including puffins and guillemots are often seen swirling above.

Turning south from Vestmanna you would cross the narrow sound and see the island of Vágar rising dramatically before you. Hugging the eastern coast the route passes spectacular gorges cut by the ever-present energy of water. Sea birds including puffins and guillemots can often be seen where they nest on sea cliffs. At the southernmost point of the journey sail beneath Troll Wife's Finger, an amazing pinnacle of rock standing sentinel to Vágar Island. From Vestmanna enjoy stunning views from the scenic ridge top road as you return to Torshavn.
