Silversea Luxury Cruises À Rosendal

Rosendal, with its mountains and waterfalls, is one of Norway’s more romantic villages. Cut off from the rest of the world by high mountains and the Folgefonna National Park, and home to just 800 year round inhabitants, to say the village is in a little world of its own is no exaggeration! While Rosendal might lack for urban excitement, you certainly couldn’t want to find a more beautiful setting. View more

Soaring mountains peaks, narrow winding fjords, impressive waterfalls and the third largest glacier in Norway are all par for the norm here, as are breathtaking glacier views and some of the freshest air you’ll ever experience. The village was famously a wedding present to Ludvig Holgersen Rosenkrantz’s daughter in 1658. Rosenkrantz was the wealthiest man in the country at the time, owning over 500 farms all over western Norway. The great manor house built shortly after the wedding still stands, along with beautifully maintained gardens that were added 300 years later. The house is a wonderful reflection of the different periods styles of the various illustrious owners and restoration has been painstakingly carried out. The oldest rooms are still decorated as they were in the early 19th century while the library is the only 17th century room in Norway kept in its entirety, complete with the original rich French tapestry from the 1660’s. No visit to this little village would be complete without a taste of local life. Pop into a tea shop for a traditional griddlecake, enjoyed amid splendid waterfront views.

Excursions depuis Rosendal

Rosendal On Foot

Discover the charming little village of Rosendal on foot, with stops to visit the Barony Rosendal and Kvinnherad Church.

Rosendal Manor

Barony Rosendal, an historic estate and manor, dates back to the 1650's when Norway's wealthiest heir, Karen Mowat was given the land as a present after her wedding to a poor but proud Danish nobleman. They built their Norwegian Renaissance manor here in 1665 and in 1678, King Christian V of Denmark-Norway gave the estate a barony status. A guided tour through the regal rooms will take you through the different periods of occupation and show how the different owners have influenced the style. The oldest restored rooms are still decorated as they were in the early 19th century. The library is the only 17th century room in Norway kept in its entirety, complete with the original rich French tapestry from the 1660's.

Rosendal Manor Gardens

The manor is surrounded by beautiful and historic grounds, often referred to as the most magnificent Victorian garden in Norway, it includes a Renaissance garden with more than 200 rose bushes, a romantic landscape garden and the kitchen garden. Enjoy some free time to wander at leisure around the fragrant gardens and experience more than 300 years of gardening history.

Kvinnherad Church

After your garden visit, a short walk will bring you to the 13th century Kvinnherad Church. The church's exterior has been built in a Gothic style with fine details of soapstone in portals and windows, whilst most of the interior is in a Baroque style. From 17th-20th century the church belonged to Barony Manor and several generations of barons and their families are buried in the vault.

Røldal Stave Church

Røldal has more than 50 mountain peaks over 3,280 feet high, small glaciers, lakes and rivers. It is famous for its 13th century stave church. The Røldal Stave Church was originally a simple one room church but over the centuries it has been through several renovations, restorations and reconstructions. The church is most widely known as a pilgrim church and was the second most important pilgrim destination in Norway during the middle ages. The pilgrims flocked to the church to get healing from the miraculous crucifix. Legend has it that the medieval crucifix sweats every midsummer night and that this sweat has a healing power. Today the church is the only stave church left that is still in daily use as a parish church and still attracts a large number of pilgrims.
