Silversea Luxury Cruises À RHODES ISLAND

RHODES ISLAND
RHODES ISLAND
RHODES ISLAND

Early travelers described Rhodes as a town of two parts: a castle or high town (Collachium) and a lower city. Today Rhodes town—sometimes referred to as Ródos town—is still a city of two parts: the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site that incorporates the high town and lower city, and the modern metropolis, or New Town, spreading away from the walls that encircle the Old Town. View more

The narrow streets of the Old Town are for the most part closed to cars and are lined with Orthodox and Catholic churches, Turkish houses (some of which follow the ancient orthogonal plan), and medieval public buildings with exterior staircases and facades elegantly constructed of well-cut limestone from Lindos. Careful reconstruction in recent years has enhanced the harmonious effect.

Excursions depuis RHODES ISLAND

'The Pirates Route' Sea Kayaking

Explore the beauty of the Southern Aegean Sea and see the island of Rhodes from a unique vantage point aboard your own kayak. Enjoy an incredible adventure on your approximately 2.5-hour paddle, with an hour-long break for a lovely picnic lunch and some beach time. Travel in your watercraft along the same routes that the pirates of Rhodes followed centuries ago as you hear the lore of these swashbuckling thieves of the sea.

Your tour begins with a 45-minute transfer to the beautiful Tsambika Beach, where you are introduced to your knowledgeable guide and receive a safety briefing and equipment orientation. Push off and begin your paddle along the coast of the island of Rhodes, enjoying the incredible panorama afforded by your vantage point on the water, with sparkling turquoise waters and gorgeous rock formations surrounding you.

Visit the same hidden sea caves as the pirates and row around the rocky coast to Archangelos village. Your kayak gives you access to remote beaches that are otherwise inaccessible but are a beautiful place to stop and take a refreshing swim, or go snorkelling in the crystalline waters. Your guide has plenty of pirate lore to share as you travel, ensuring your paddle stays interesting.

Take a break from paddling and beach your kayak on the shore of Kokkini Ammos beach. Relax on the red sand beach and take in the view of the dramatic, craggy cliffs as you enjoy an authentic Greek picnic lunch.

Afterwards, make the return paddle to your starting point and transfer back to the port.

Please note: This tour involves extensive activity and participants must be in good physical condition and able to swim in water too deep to stand. Guests should wear a swimsuit under a cover-up, water shoes, plenty of sun protection and bring a towel from the ship. Kayaks used on this tour are 2 person kayaks. Lockers are available for storing your personal belongings. Snorkel equipment is provided. Minimum age to participate is 18 years, and a maximum weight of 209 pounds (95 kilograms, 210 lbs) applies to all participants. All guests need to sign a waiver to participate. The parent or guardian would need to sign a special permission waiver if a participant is below the age limit. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Best of Rhodes

Watch the history of Greece unfold during this picturesque and informative, full-day excursion to Rhodes and Lindos.

Lindos

Depart the pier in Rhodes for the scenic, approximate one-hour, 30-mile (48-kilometre) drive to Lindos via St. Paul's Bay. En route, pass by picturesque villages and a landscape dotted with citrus groves, vineyards and gnarled olive trees. Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour through the narrow, cobblestone streets of this ancient Doric village, then proceed up a long, narrow, path measuring approximately 950-feet (290-metres) en route to the summit of the Acropolis.

Acropolis & Lunch

Perched on a bluff overlooking a village of whitewashed houses, narrow streets and souvenir shops, the Acropolis offers a splendid view of St. Paul's Bay. The top of the Acropolis is accessed via a steep flight of stairs. Here, see the magnificent remains of past civilisations, including the 4th-century B.C. Doric Temple of Athena Lindia, a double-winged portico, a Byzantine church and the fortifications of the Knights, including the remains of the Governor's quarters.

Your tour continues to a seaside venue on the shores of Kolymbia Bay. After lunch, your tour continues to the Old town of Rhodes.

Rhodes Old Town

Upon arrival, leave your coach and take a guided walking tour through the streets of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, and visit the Palace of the Grand Masters. Following your tour, some free time is made available to explore the Old Town at your leisure before re-boarding your coach for the brief return drive to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking on cobblestone streets and uphill areas, with many steps to negotiate. A walk of approximately ten minutes may be required to reach the village from the coach parking area; its centre allows only pedestrian and donkey-borne traffic. The 195 steps to the fortress have no railing. Although it is not suggested, guests may opt to take at their own risk a donkey ride (subject to availability) uphill to access the Acropolis of Lindos. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair. Wear light-weight clothing and bring sun protection. The tour sequence may vary to avoid overcrowding. Guests must be at least 18 years old to be served alcoholic beverages.

Medieval Rhodes

Discover the wonderful highlights of Rhodes during this picturesque, half-day walking tour through the historic Old Town.

Scenic Drive and Grand Masters Palace

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate 30-minute drive to Rhodes. En route, pass by the old port of Mandraki, and stop for photos at Agios Stefanos, which offers lovely views over the Bay of Rhodes. Upon arrival in Rhodes, enter the Old Town from D'Amboise Gate, the closest point to the Palace of the Grand Masters. A visit is then made to the palace, which served as a wartime fortress, a peacetime residence for the Grand Master and a meeting place for senior knights.

Old City Walking Tour

Next, take a guided walking tour along the cobblestone streets of the Avenue of the Knights, where the knights once lived. To this day, the street exudes a noble and forbidden aura; its lofty buildings stretch in a 1,968-foot-long (600-metre-long) unbroken wall of honey-coloured stone blocks, and its flat façade is punctuated by huge doorways and arched windows.

Archaeological Museum

A visit is then made to the Archaeological Museum, which is housed in the 15th-century Knights Hospital. Here, see many artefacts and exquisite statues dating back as far as the 4th century B.C. The most famous exhibit in the museum is the parian marble statue, the Aphrodite of Rhodes. At the conclusion of your tour, you may opt to re-board the coach for the brief drive back to the pier, or remain in town for further exploration and return to the ship on your own.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.5 miles (about 0.8 kilometres) on cobblestone streets, with approximately 50 steps to negotiate at the Palace of the Grand Masters. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Wear light-weight clothing and bring sun protection.
