Formerly the neighborhood was called the parish of Nossa Senhora das Necessidades and was one of the main ports of entry for immigrants in the region, coming mainly from the Azores Island, in Portugal. The place has also served as a port and customs post, receiving foreign merchants and vessels. One of the most striking features of Santo Antônio de Lisboa is the colorful houses with windows and doors painted in bold colors, a legacy of Azorean culture. They can also be found in other regions of Florianópolis, such as in Sambaqui and in the parish of Ribeirão da Ilha.


The neighborhood is one of the main gastronomic centers of the city, with dozens of restaurants, most of them specialized in Seafood. Some have tables on decks on the beach, with an incredible view. Azoreann Cooking Class in Florianopolis

Discover the secrets behind preparing Azorean cuisine during this informative half-day lunch tour. Florianópolis cuisine began with the landing of the Portuguese that brought slaves to work and explore the land. While the Indians used food such as cassava, maize, the Portuguese exploited deep sea fishing.


During this experience a typical dish called Mussel "Lambe, lambe" which means "licks, licks" will be prepared. This is a typical dish of the island of Florianópolis, mainly in the south of the island. When the fishermen reach the shore, they harvest the mussels and add a special ingredient called "Urucum" oil, a seed of a tree that is abundantly found in the Atlantic forest, which was used by local Indians to color their faces. When ready, fishermen without using cutlery used the licking motion to remove the shellfish from the shell.


Public market
