Silversea Luxury Cruises À NARSARSUAQ (Kujalleq)

NARSARSUAQ (Kujalleq)

With average yearly temperatures of 5˚C and a population of just 150, to say that Narsarsuaq is off the beaten track is no understatement. Yet, what this little Greenlandic village might lack in size is more than made up for in big, bold scenery, generous wildlife and a surprisingly thriving tourism scene. Greenland’s leitmotivs of thrilling landscape and Viking history are majestically illustrated in Narsarsuaq. Jagged mountains plunge into glacier-dotted fjords, wildflower-sprinkled meadows stretch as far as the eye can see, while golden light bathes it all. View more

Take silent filled hikes or kayak excursions to really explore what the little village’s surroundings have to offer, occasionally scanning the skies for the elusive white-tailed eagle. The tangible quietness of Narsarsuaq is in great contrast to its bold and riotous Viking history. Norse Vikings, including the infamous Erik the Red, settled in the vicinity over a thousand years ago (985 AD). Their long and bloody history is well documented and ruins can be found in nearby Qassiarsuk, Igaliku, and Hvalsey. Narsarsuaq’s placement in the Atlantic Ocean between Canada and mainland Europe made the little settlement a hub for U.S. activity during WWII. In 1941, the U.S. built an air force base (name Blue West One or Bluie) which served the Allies as a stepping stone to the battlegrounds. A 600-bed hospital (which was later increased to 1,000 beds) was also built to accommodate casualties from the D-Day landings and later, the Korean War.

Excursions depuis NARSARSUAQ (Kujalleq)

Hiking trip on the ridge

Enjoy a hike with spectacular views of the Narsarsuaq River and Glacier.

Narsarsuaq

Embark on a 3 to 4 miles (5 to 6 kilometres) hike along the ridge with a fantastic view over the valley, the Narsarsuaq River and Glacier. Follow the gravel road among small birches and willow trees. In the Hospital Valley the Americans built a hospital with 250 beds during WWII. Today only a lonely chimney remains. The impressive Narsarsuaq River with melting water from the ice cap is running into the fjord. Maybe the white-tailed eagle will hover over us. Your guide will tell you about the ice cap, the local glacier and life in Narsarsuaq now and then.

The tour concludes at the pier.

Photo tour of Qooroq Ice Fjord by Boat

Encounter up close amazing icebergs that run around the glacial deposit and mouth of the Qooroq Fjord. This is a photo tour and is unguided.

Qooroq Ice Fjord

Sail from Narsarsuaq to the underwater moraine at the mouth of the Qooroq Ice Fjord. Many icebergs run aground on the moraine, make your way into the fjord along a tortuous path through the stranded icebergs. Behold a breathtaking sight of thousands of icebergs, sheer cliff faces and the enormous glacier. The glacier delivers about 200 thousand tons of ice at day into the fjord. Many of these icebergs have a rich turquoise colour.

In the fjord, enjoy the panorama of marvelous sights; with the motor stopped, the boat will drift quietly with the current. The absolute silence is disturbed by the sound of the icebergs, as they break free from the glacier and fall rolling and crashing into the fjord. Along the way, you will hear the mini explosions as thousand-year old air bubbles escape in the glass.

Return to Narsarsuaq after an unforgettable experience.

Settlement of Eric the Red – Qassiarsuk

Cross the beautiful bay from Narsarsuaq by ships tender to reach the village of Qassiarsuk, founded by sheep farmer Otto Frederiksen in 1924.Today about 40 people live there, but the village's shop, school and church also serve the 12 sheep farms located on the peninsula. The whole area is dotted with Norse ruins, in fact today sheep farmers are working on exact the same land as the Viking Eric the Red chose for his settlement more than 1000 years ago.

Eric the Red Settlement

Archaeologists believe that the stone foundations found in Qassiarsuk are the remains of the Brattahlid farmstead that Erik the Red established in the year 982. In the year 2000, a replica of a Norse longhouse and a small church (Tjodhilde's Church) were built using traditional sod construction techniques.

Join in on a guided walking tour in an area that beautifully links together old history and modern living.

Afterwards return to Narsarsuaq by ships tenders.
