Silversea Luxury Cruises À MYKONOS ISLAND

Although the fishing boats still go out in good weather, Mykonos largely makes its living from tourism these days. The summer crowds have turned one of the poorest islands in Greece into one of the richest. Old Mykonians complain that their young, who have inherited stores where their grandfathers once sold eggs or wine, get so much rent that they have lost ambition, and in summer sit around pool bars at night with their friends, and hang out in Athens in winter when island life is less scintillating. Put firmly on the map by Jackie O in the 1960s, Mykonos town—called Hora by the locals—remains the Saint-Tropez of the Greek islands. The scenery is memorable, with its whitewashed streets, Little Venice, the Kato Myli ridge of windmills, and Kastro, the town's medieval quarter. Its cubical two- or three-story houses and churches, with their red or blue doors and domes and wooden balconies, have been long celebrated as some of the best examples of classic Cycladic architecture. Luckily, the Greek Archaeological Service decided to preserve the town, even when the Mykonians would have preferred to rebuild, and so the Old Town has been impressively preserved. Pink oleander, scarlet hibiscus, and trailing green pepper trees form a contrast amid the dazzling whiteness, whose frequent renewal with whitewash is required by law. Any visitor who has the pleasure of getting lost in its narrow streets (made all the narrower by the many outdoor stone staircases, which maximize housing space in the crowded village) will appreciate how its confusing layout was designed to foil pirates—if it was designed at all. After Mykonos fell under Turkish rule in 1537, the Ottomans allowed the islanders to arm their vessels against pirates, which had a contradictory effect: many of them found that raiding other islands was more profitable than tilling arid land. At the height of Aegean piracy, Mykonos was the principal headquarters of the corsair fleets—the place where pirates met their fellows, found willing women, and filled out their crews. Eventually the illicit activity evolved into a legitimate and thriving trade network. Morning on Mykonos town's main quay is busy with deliveries, visitors for the Delos boats, lazy breakfasters, and street cleaners dealing with the previous night's mess. In late morning the cruise-boat people arrive, and the shops are all open. In early afternoon, shaded outdoor tavernas are full of diners eating salads (Mykonos's produce is mostly imported); music is absent or kept low. In mid- and late afternoon, the town feels sleepy, since so many people are at the beach, on excursions, or sleeping in their air-conditioned rooms; even some tourist shops close for siesta. By sunset, people have come back from the beach, having taken their showers and rested. At night, the atmosphere in Mykonos ramps up. The cruise-boat people are mostly gone, coughing three-wheelers make no deliveries in the narrow streets, and everyone is dressed sexy for summer and starting to shimmy with the scene. Many shops stay open past midnight, the restaurants fill up, and the bars and discos make ice cubes as fast as they can. Ready to dive in? Begin your tour of Mykonos town (Hora) by starting out at its heart: Mando Mavrogenous Square.

Excursions depuis MYKONOS ISLAND

Best of Mykonos Island

Explore the best sites that Mykonos lsland has to offer on this full-day excursion.

Boat Ride

Depart the ship for the brief transfer to the local ferry dock, then board a ferry, or 'caique', for the 45-minute ride to the tiny, uninhabited island of Delos. Upon arrival, your tour continues on foot.

Delos

Although Delos Island only has an area of approximately 1.5 square-miles (about four square-kilometres), it was once a very important religious, cultural and commercial centre. Today, the island is covered with ruins from fallen columns, sections of the famous mosaics that adorned the houses of the wealthy, a stadium and seats from a theatre. A row of five marble lions also stands amidst these ruins.

Other interesting monuments found at the site and spread over a wide area include the Agora, the treasuries of the various cities, the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Theatre, the Sanctuary of the Foreign Gods, and the sacred Mt. Cynthus. After your visit, re-board the boat for the approximate 45-minute return ride to Mykonos. Upon arrival, board your coach for a scenic drive through the rocky countryside.

Ano Mera and Monastery Visit

Visit the charming village of Ano Mera at the center of the island, home to the lovely Panagia Tourliani Monastery, built by monks in 1542 and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The monastery features wonderful, unique island architecture, an ornately-carved marble fountain in the courtyard and a carved wooden screen in the church that was imported from Florence. After a guided tour of the site, proceed for a Greek typical lunch with wine at a local tavern where a folkloric show will take place.

Mykonos Town

After lunch and a little bit of relax, return to Mykonos Town for your guided walking tour. Mykonos is a picturesque town with a labyrinth-like maze of tiny streets, white houses and red-roofed churches. Don't be fooled by its small size; it is one of the most cosmopolitan towns of the Aegean. But despite the many shops, boutiques and stylish cafes, the town has not lost its charm and the island's strict building regulations have kept its Cycladic architectural style beautifully intact. Your guided, walking tour through the narrow, winding streets introduces you to some of the area's most treasured landmarks.

No tour of Mykonos would be complete without the opportunity to taste a local almond cookie accompanied by mastic liquer.

At the completion of your tour, you are welcome to continue sightseeing on your own or to return back to the ship by shuttle service.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking on uneven ground and cobblestones. Exploration of the archaeological site of Delos is entirely on-foot. It is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. The trip to-and-from Delos is via local ferry boat on seas that may be choppy at times. The ferry is not exclusive to Silversea guests. Wear light-weight, comfortable clothing with closed-toe walking shoes, and bring protection from the sun (hat, sunglasses, sun block). There is limited shade at the archaeological site. Ladies must wear skirts and cover their shoulders for the visit to the monastery; shorts are not permitted inside. Guests must be at least 18 years old to be served alcoholic beverages.

Ano Mera Village, Monastery Visit & Refreshment

Next, take a guided tour of the nearby Panagia Tourliani Monastery, built by monks in 1542 and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. The monastery features wonderful, unique island architecture, an ornately-carved marble fountain in the courtyard and a carved wooden screen in the church that was imported from Florence. From here, proceed to the peaceful little village-square for some Greek appetisers and 'ouzo'.

Kalafatis Beach

The road to Kalafatis beach situated on the southeast side of the island snakes through scenic villages. Mykonos is world famous for its beaches with golden white sand lapped by the blue Aegean sea. Kalafatis Beach is a prime example; a stop will be made to enjoy the view before your coach transfer you back to the ship.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking and is recommended for guests with limited mobility and those who utilize a wheelchair, however guests must be able to negotiate few steps to get on and off the coach. Wear light-weight, comfortable clothing with closed-toe walking shoes, and bring protection from the sun. Ladies must wear skirts and cover their shoulders for the visit to the monastery; shorts are not permitted inside. Guests must be at least 18 years old to be served alcoholic beverages. When the ship is anchored in the bay, a walk of approximately one mile (1.2 kilometres) is required to reach the bus parking area.

Mykonos Town Highlights on Foot

Mykonos is probably the most well-known and talked about of all the Greek islands. Re-known today for its jet-set nightlife and wild beaches, Mykonos, after various occupations typical in the history of Greece, actually made a substantial impact during the Greek War of Independence. After which, the life here did settled down for a while before it was 're-discovered' as a beautiful location for filming and bringing with it actors, artists and jet setters. Upon arriving in Mykonos Town, your walking tour will begin to showcase both the lifestyle and the true history of this unique town.

Mykonos Town Walking Tour

Commence your walking tour through the narrow whitewashed streets; here you can appreciate the fact that its' confusing layout was designed to foil the attacking pirates. The picture-perfect "Little Venice", so called due to its striking resemblance in design to the famous canal city and the nearby windmills (an island trademark) offer wonderful photo opportunities. Afterwards, enjoy some free time for shopping before returning to the ship.

Aegean Maritime Museum

You'll visit the Aegean Maritime Museum, which goal is the preservation, promotion and study of the Greek maritime history and tradition, and in particular the evolution and activities of the merchant ship, chiefly in the historic region of the Aegean Sea. In the museum's garden lie reproductions of ancient marble gravestones from the islands of Mykonos and Delos, dealing with shipwrecks and sailors who were lost at sea.

Refreshment & Free Time (Optional)

Finally, do as the Mykonians and enjoy a refreshment of ouzo with some traditional 'mezedes' before returning to your ship. Afterwards, enjoy a stroll through Mykonos Town on your own, or return to the ship by shuttle service.

Please note: Tour involves an extensive amount of walking over cobbled and uneven surfaces. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or for those who utilise a wheelchair. We suggest guests wear lightweight, seasonal clothing, flat, walking shoes and sun protection.

Among the savoury local treats to be sampled at each venue are pork 'souvlaki', 'locoum', a variety of Greek appetisers, and a deliciously sweet and sticky vanilla dessert.

At the conclusion of your culinary walking tour, you can walk back to the coach parking area, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier, or choose to remain in Mykonos Town for shopping and further exploration, and return to the pier at your own expense.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 1.55 miles (about 2.5 kilometres), at times over uneven and cobblestone surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and five steps at the entrance to the bakery. This tour is not suitable for guests with food allergies, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair.
