Silversea Luxury Cruises À MENTON

MENTON

Surrounded by the Côte d’Azur and the Ligurian Alps, this charming town full of mystery first appeared in the 12th century. At this time Menton belonged to the Vento family of Genoa. In 1346, Menton was under ownership of Charles Grimaldi, Lord of Monaco. From hence, Menton’s history became intertwined with that of the principality of Monaco. In 1848, Menton broke away from the principality and proclaimed itself a free city under the protection of Sarde. View more

Menton chose to become part of France in 1860 and Charles III of Monaco released all rights of the city to Emperor Napoléon III. Menton became part of the Alps-Maritimes department. The new local economy of tourism, developed from 1880 onwards. Menton became a popular winter resort and until 1914, hotels and villas welcomed guests from England, Russia and all over the world during the beautiful days of winter. During the First World War, the city transformed the hotels and palaces into hospitals. Annexed by the Italians and then the Germans during World War II, Menton was liberated on September 8, 1944. The town was completely devastated and it was not until the 1960s that the rebuilding of Menton was concluded. It then regained its appeal as a much favoured tourist destination both in winter and summer. Today, Menton is a dynamic city, which, in the last 10 years has become much more modern, better equipped and even more beautiful. Thanks to a beneficial subtropical microclimate (316 cloudless days a year), winter is practically unknown in Menton. Therefore, you can enjoy a beautiful sea and the nearby sunny mountains all year round. Menton is near the borders of Italy, the Principality of Monaco and the Comté de Nice. Paradise of gardens, Menton is also a unique display of architecture. These have molded this “secret Riviera”, paradise where you can walk in the footsteps of famous names. Moreover, the town is the first town of the Alpes-Maritimes to receive the designation “City of Art and History”.

Grace's Stroll on a Private Vintage car with Driver

Who hasn't dreamed of going for a beautiful scenic drive in a splendid vintage car.

The cars, depending on the model selected at the time of confirmation, will accommodate a maximum of 2 passengers and are chauffeur driven.

From the Menton pier, you will follow the path of Princess Grace (the road where the movie to catch a thief was filmed on the Corniche), the Botanic Garden opened in 1984 by Prince Rainier III in memory of his wife Princess Grace. There is a large bronze statue of Princess Grace in the garden as well as both English and Mediterranean plants and flowers. Rose gardens abound and there are olive trees that are over 100 years old. View the private domaine in Roc Angel and unfortunately the road curve where Princess Grace died. Drive to Place du Casino for a photo stop.

You may personalize your itinerary with your driver within the time allowed, we suggest however to focus on the spectacular "corniche" roads overlooking the coast and offering breathtaking vistas.

During this tour, enjoy a Champagne pause.

Riviera Corniches

Experience the exquisite beauty of the French Riviera during this picturesque sightseeing drive through the Grande, Middle, and Lower Corniches. Between Nice and Menton the pine-forested Alpes drop precipitously to the sea, creating one of the most dramatic and inspiring views in Europe. Carved into the mountainside are three roads known as the Corniches.

Depart the pier via coach for a scenic sightseeing drive through the French Riviera.

La Turbie

Your journey begins on the Grande Corniche, which offers marvelous vistas extending as far as Italy. A stop is then made at the village of La Turbie. Located at an altitude of 1,575 feet (473 metres), the village offers splendid panoramic views of the coast and Monaco.

Eze

After a brief photo stop at La Turbie, continue along the Middle, or 'Moyenne' Corniche for scenic views that extend to the north and village of Eze, where a comfort stop is made before continuing on to Nice. En route, admire stunning views of Beaulieu, Cap Ferrat and Villefranche.

Nice

Upon arrival in Nice, take a brief orientation tour along the Promenade des Anglais and past some of the town's beautiful squares. Following your orientation tour, continue on with the return drive to Monte Carlo via the Corniche Inférieure, or Lower Corniche, which runs along the foot of the mountain slopes and follows the coastal road.

Take in splendid vistas of picturesque Villefranche and a charming fishing village en route to the ship.

Roqubrune Village & Charming Menton

Mix the medieval pleasures of the village of Roquebrune Cap Martin with the beauty and bustle of Menton.

Medieval Village of Roquebrune

Leaving the port, head to the beautiful hill top medieval village of Roquebrune, clinging to the rocky outcropping on the mountainside. Due to its geographical location, and its upmarket atmosphere, It makes for the perfect place to visit. Visit the old Castle Chateau also called Chateau GRIMALDI. The castle dates back to around 970 and was originally built to defend the western border. The scenery is just breath taking. You will get to see the sea but also all the way to Monaco or the Cap Martin!

In 1355, Roccabruna as it was known then, fell into the hands of the Grimaldi family of Monaco where it remained for almost five centuries until 1793. It became part of the French territory for the first time. Between 1814 and 1861 the region was claimed by Monaco, Italy and France. This has led to the beautiful mixture of Mediterranean styles which can be seen in the architecture and design of the village. Despite gaining its freedom from Monaco in 1861, the village is only a short distance from the border of the Principality.

Menton

Driving on the Italian coast you will reach the town of Menton. This village is the last one before arriving at the Italian border. For centuries; it formed the border between Provence and Genoa, as part of Monaco. It has been French ever since the plebiscite of 1860, when it soon became a fashionable tourist centre with grand mansions and gardens. Its temperate Mediterranean climate is especially favorable to the citrus industry, with which it is strongly identified. Discover this tiny fishing village twinned with Laguna Beach and is as sunny as its Californian counterpart is. Stroll the promenade that snakes around the charming little harbor, savoring the many shops and enjoy a drink and some free time. Then you can stay in town or walk back to the pier.

Saint Agnes, the Highest Eagle Nest Village in Europe

Sainte-Agnes

Despite its proximity to the coast (3 miles from Menton as the crow flies but a 20 minute drive along the steep winding road), the village stands high on a rocky hill, giving it far reaching views across the landscape and the Mediterranean, with mountains rising steeply all around the village, creating a significant part of the appeal of Sainte-Agnes. The village offers the visitor a very picturesque walk among his curiosities, the Rue PIE: with its very close support arches. Enjoy views on the Mediterranean Sea. SAINT AGNES: with its breathtaking panorama, Saint Agnes has earned its nickname" balcony of the Cote Azur": You will have an internal visit to Fort St Agnes. This structure once helped to repel the Italians and was part of the Maginot line. For a long time, it was a coveted object of the Counts of Ventimiglia, Counts of Provence, Grimaldi or the House of Savoy, it was owned by the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia from 1814 until its attachment to France in 1860. In the Second World War. Its fort, built in the 1930's was the last link in the Maginot line to stop Italian troops.

Afterwards enjoy a refreshment of fresh homemade lemon pie with soft drink on a terrace with stunning views.
