Silversea Luxury Cruises À Icy Strait Point, Alaska

If there is one word that sums up Alaska it is nature. Mile and miles of it. And Icy Strait Point – one of Alaska’s most unspoilt destinations has – nature in spades. To begin with, Icy Straight Point is stunningly beautiful. It is the Alaska of your imagination: eagles soaring overhead, whales breeching before your eyes. Moody, low-hanging clouds set the scene while velvety green mountains provide the backdrop. Sparklingly clear waters lap at pebbly shores. View more

These are beaches of the adventure kind, you won’t find sun loungers and sombreros here, more like kayaks and canoes, ready for those who want to take their discovery off shore. The village prides itself on being home to “more brown bears than humans”, so expect immersive wilderness experiences, from ATV adventures to zip lining through a canopy of trees! Located on Chichagoff Island, 35 miles west of Juneau and right in the centre of Glacier Bay, Icy Strait Point began life as a salmon cannery business, providing employment for the residents of nearby Hoonah. The cannery has served the community in many ways, including proving housing for employees after a fire in 1944 destroyed many resident’s homes. It ceased to function entirely in 1999 and in 2001, the landing was repurposed as America’s only private cruise ship terminal. The Alaskan owned and operated terminal funnels all its profits back into the local environment and provides employment for around 85% of local residents, many of whom live in Alaska’s largest Native Tlingit village.

Board a comfortable bus for a guided tour through the Tlingit village of Hoonah en-route to your departure site high in the surrounding hills. Upon arrival, your local guides will provide a safety briefing before you board your 4x4 vehicle for a rugged drive through the forest with stops to take in the scenic valley, mountain, and ocean views. Alaskan Picnic by Helicopter

Combine a Tlingit cultural experience with helicopter flightseeing. Learn about local history and culture and soar over the wilds of Chichagof Island.

Begin your adventure with a drive through the Tlingit village of Hoonah en route to the heliport. Following a short safety briefing, take flight to experience the rugged region of sheer mountains and majestic valleys. Keep your camera ready to capture the spectacular views below of the Tongass National Forest with lush forests of spruce, hemlock and cedar clinging to mountain sides, set in this land of incredible natural beauty.

Land on a remote beach where your local guide will teach you traditional methods of preserving food and treat you to some local delicacies. Living off the land is more than survival, it is a way of life. Most local Tlingits live a subsistence lifestyle using methods of preservation passed down from generation to generation. Walk along the beach and learn why locals say, "When the tide is out, the table is set." Learn about the smoking and kippering process and even savor some smoked salmon treats.

This is the tour for those who want to experience the "real" Alaska in one of the most stunning settings imaginable. Enjoy breathtaking scenery on your return flight and cherish the time you spent in this wild land.

Halibut Fishing

Live your own 'big fish' story. Board a modern cabin cruiser as you embark on the ultimate fishing excursion to the rich waters of Icy Strait. Following a brief orientation, drop your line as your local guide searches for one of the hottest fishing spots known only to locals. The waters of Icy Strait are teeming with halibut, making angling conditions ideal. Icy Strait is known for its abundance of marine life and brilliant photo opportunities.

Heli-Bike Adventure

Prepare yourself for triple adventure on the only helicopter-biking and hiking tour in Southeast Alaska!

Begin with a narrated tour through Hoonah, the largest Tlingit village in the world, to the heli-pad base. Once you receive a safety briefing and gear up, you're ready to take off. Your bikes ride with you on the helicopter as you ascend to the top of a secluded mountain. Soon you'll be enjoying breathtaking aerial views seen by few. Jagged peaks shrouded with snow and mist tower over verdant valleys, alpine ridges, mountain peaks and the abundant waters of Port Frederick and Icy Strait below.

A gentle landing brings you to the top of the mountain where your small group will meet your experienced guide. After a short safety briefing begin your picturesque downhill journey. Even if you are new to heli-biking this trip is a perfect way to experience the wilderness of Chichagof Island. Your guide will tell local stories that have been passed through generations as you gradually make your way down to the beach. Make stops along the way to hike out offshoot trails to gain a better view and search for wildlife.

Once at the beach, enjoy a locally made snack and learn about what it's like to live in a remote Alaska village. Upon extraction, marvel in more awe-inspiring views and don't forget to look up and appreciate the route you just biked. Don't miss this one-of-a-kind adventure that will take your breath away!

Icy Strait Kayak Adventure

The protected waters of Port Frederick are yours to explore as you set off from the beach at Icy Strait Point in your two-person wilderness kayak. Led by your safety-certified, local guide, you will paddle along the Hoonah waterfront where bald eagles are often seen and few humans can usually follow.

Keep your eyes open and your spirit of adventure stoked along the way as humpback whales have been known to feed along the very same route. A motorized safety boat accompanies the tour but guests should be able to paddle through small waves against a moderate current.

In Alaska’s Wildest Kitchen

Alaska's Wildest Kitchen is a hands-on tasting session hosted by a colorful Alaska fisherwoman and master wilderness chef. Experience wild, natural, and sustainable Alaska seafood as only Alaskans do while learning what sets Alaska seafood apart, including local fishing, preserving, and cooking techniques. Later, you'll watch an expert filleting demonstration and even get a chance to grill your own sample catch-of-the-day over our alder-wood grill.

All seafood is harvested by local fishermen in nearby waters so the freshness can't be beat! The tasting menu may include fresh and canned salmon dishes and grilled halibut. One alcoholic beverage and printed recipe cards are included in the cost of the tour. Wine and Alaskan Brewing Company beer are available for purchase.

Icy Strait Point features the world's largest ZipRider, with six 5,330' ziplines dropping 1330'. After launching, you will quickly accelerate to speeds exceeding 60 mph as you soar 300 feet above the rainforest below. If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind experience, then the ZipRider is for you. With up to six guests descending at once, this is also a great family or group activity!

Your adventure begins when you board your 8-passenger gondola for the scenic ride to the top of 1550' Hoonah Mountain. Your ZipRide will conclude with a break-activated landing on the beach back at Icy Strait Point.

ZipRider photos will be available for purchase at the end of your ride.

Notes:

Guests with back or neck problems and expectant mothers are not allowed to participate. The ZipRider landing can be somewhat abrupt; all photographic devices must have a lanyard so participants are able to hold on to the harness. Minimum weight is 75 lbs; maximum weight is 275 lbs. Minimum height is 4'4"; maximum height is 6'8". While we will make every effort to keep groups together, we cannot guarantee every group will be able to descend together.

Spasski River Valley Wildlife & Bear Search

Journey from Icy Strait Point into the wilds of Chichagof Island as you explore the Spasski River valley in search of local wildlife. The Spasski River valley is famous for having one of the highest densities of coastal brown bears in the world! Your local guide will narrate as your bus travels through the Tlingit village of Hoonah and out into coastal rainforest and muskegs. Watch for bald eagles, Sitka black-tailed deer and the Alaska coastal brown bears that could be anywhere along the road. Once you arrive in the river valley, you will disembark the bus and accompany your guide down a gravel path and boardwalks across a muskeg to viewing platforms strategically positioned over the lower Spasski River. Along the way, your guide will describe and explain the delicate rainforest ecology that supports our island's massive bears and all of the other commonly found flora and fauna of the area. This area is great for bird-watching and the Spasski River is an active salmon stream.

You will be exposed to the elements during your nature walk and time on the viewing platforms. Please wear comfortable walking (water-resistant) shoes, dress warmly, and bring a waterproof jacket and pants if it's raining. Weather conditions in southeast Alaska may change suddenly. Please note that bear-sightings are not guaranteed. While they are commonly spotted throughout the summer, this is a true wilderness area and 100% unscripted. Do remember to bring your cameras and binoculars!

Whale & Marine Mammals Cruise

Depart directly from Icy Strait Point on your safe, stable, covered, and comfortable whale-watching vessel and travel through the bountiful waters of Icy Strait to the renowned Point Adolphus area, home to Alaska's largest summer population of humpback whales. Along the way, there is the possibility of spotting some of the region's other marine life, including orca (killer whales), Steller's sea lions, seal, and porpoise. Don't forget to scan the shore for bald eagles in the evergreen treetops and bears on the beaches!

Your onboard naturalist will describe the biology and behavior of the diverse species that gather every summer to indulge in Alaska's nutrient-rich waters.

Wear warm, layered clothing, and a waterproof jacket if you want to enjoy the open-air observation deck. Weather conditions may change suddenly. Of course, remember to bring your cameras and binoculars! If it's a sunny day, bring sunscreen.

The whales are so plentiful that Icy Strait Point will give you a 100% refund if a whale is not spotted on the trip. However, don't anticipate a refund! Whales have been sighted on every tour conducted since we opened in 2004.

Whale, Wildlife & Bear Search

At Icy Strait Point it is possible to experience in a single day being in the midst of humpback whales as they feed and frolic in the bountiful waters of Icy Strait, then overlooking a wild fish and salmon stream with bears happily feeding.

Whale sightings are guaranteed on this high-speed whale cruise towards Point Adolphus. Along the way you will be traveling through waters that support a wide array of marine life, including orca (killer) whales, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, sea otters, porpoise, and of course the magnificent humpback whales.

Keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles in the evergreen treetops lining the shore.

An on-board naturalist will describe the diversity of marine life that accumulates here every summer to feed in the nutrient-rich waters, fueled by the long Alaska summer days.

Cruise back to Icy Strait Point where your local guide will meet you to begin your Wildlife Search. The journey out to the Spasski River is a tour in itself, as your bus travels through the Tlingit village of Hoonah and out through the interior forests and muskegs of Chichagof Island. Watch for bald eagles, woodpeckers, Sitka black-tail deer and Alaska coastal brown bears all along the way.

When you arrive near the river, your guide will lead you down a gravel path, across a boardwalk over the delicate muskeg and to the viewing platforms to the river itself, all the while describing and illuminating the rain forest ecology that supports the island's massive bears.
