Silversea Luxury Cruises À FREMANTLE (Perth)

FREMANTLE (Perth)
FREMANTLE (Perth)

The port city of Fremantle is a jewel in Western Australia's crown, largely because of its colonial architectural heritage and hippy vibe. Freo (as the locals call it) is a city of largely friendly, interesting, and sometimes eccentric residents supportive of busking, street art, and alfresco dining. Like all great port cities, Freo is cosmopolitan, with mariners from all parts of the world strolling the streets—including thousands of U.S. Navy personnel on rest and recreation throughout the year. View more

It's also a good jumping-off point for a day trip to Rottnest Island, where lovely beaches, rocky coves, and unique wallaby-like inhabitants called quokkas set the scene.Modern Fremantle is a far cry from the barren, sandy plain that greeted the first wave of English settlers back in 1829 at the newly constituted Swan River Colony. Most were city dwellers, and after five months at sea in sailing ships they landed on salt-marsh flats that sorely tested their fortitude. Living in tents with packing cases for chairs, they found no edible crops, and the nearest freshwater was a distant 51 km (32 miles)—and a tortuous trip up the waters of the Swan. As a result they soon moved the settlement upriver to the vicinity of present-day Perth.Fremantle remained the principal port, and many attractive limestone buildings were built to service the port traders. Australia's 1987 defense of the America's Cup—held in waters off Fremantle—triggered a major restoration of the colonial streetscapes. In the leafy suburbs nearly every other house is a restored 19th-century gem.

A Tale of Two Cities

BODY>

Discover the highlights of Fremantle and Perth during this charming sightseeing tour.

Fremantle

Depart the pier by coach with your guide to explore two of the West's most significant cities. The port of Fremantle delights with its streets lined with quaint terraced houses, ornate historic buildings and lively sidewalk cafés. Pass the Round House at Arthur's Head, which was built as a gaol in a unique twelve-sided building perched high atop a hill overlooking the sea and harbour. Next drive passed the restored Cape Dutch-style Maritime Museum, a grand cluster of stone buildings that houses a comprehensive and fascinating record of Australian history.

Perth

The prosperity of Perth is evident as you wind your way past fabulous mansions and enter this impressive city nestled on the banks of the Swan River, where skyscrapers mix with historic architecture and beautiful parks to create a renowned skyline. Take time to enjoy photo opportunities at the delightful Kings Park. Kings Park enjoys prime position on Mt. Eliza overlooking Perth City and the Swan River, making it an ideal location for photography.

Leaving Kings Park your final stop is at Cottesloe Beach for a photo opportunity of white sand and blue seas before returning to your ship.

Fremantle Luxury Golf Experience

BODY>

Embrace the scenic beauty of Fremantle in a unique new way during this relaxing, half-day golfing excursion.

Royal Fremantle Golf Club & Eighteen-Hole Round of Golf

Play at one of Fremantle's private member's course, the Royal Fremantle Golf Club. The club was established in 1905 and is one of the few Golf Clubs that still occupies its original site. The course is well maintained with clearly defined Kikuyu fairways that are amongst the best all year round in the country, tidy tee boxes and Bent grass greens that are deceptively quick.

Clothing Change, Club Selection, Pre-Game Warm-Up, Motorised Golf Cart, Personal Golf Pack

Depart the pier for the short transfer from the ship to your Eighteen-Hole Round of Golf. Upon arrival, change into your golf attire, select your premium clubs and receive driving range balls for your pre-game warm-up. Your shared, motorised golf cart awaits your arrival, along with a personal golf pack containing a sleeve of three golf balls, custom golf towel, golf tees, divot tool, and scoring pencil to be taken home.

At the conclusion of your round of golf, re-board your vehicle for a short drive back to the pier.

Fremantle Prison Tunnels

Explore the macabre penal history of the renowned Fremantle Prison during this unforgettable, half-day excursion through its astonishing labyrinth of underground tunnels and passageways.

Fremantle, Fremantle Prison

Depart the pier for the short drive to the historic Fremantle Prison. Built in the 1850s, it sits atop a network of tunnels and passageways that were constructed by prisoners. Upon arrival, proceed for check-in, meet your specialised guide, and receive your safety and tour instructions. Afterward, don your safety equipment, descend the approximately 65-foot (about 20-metre) ladder into the depths below and begin your guided tunnels tour.

Guided Tour On-Foot and via Boat, Underground Tunnels and Waterways

Along the way, discover original blast holes, bores, oil lamp recesses and artefacts from the days when working in the tunnels was hard labour for prisoners. Explore the labyrinth of tunnels beneath the prison, then embark replica convict punts and paddle along submerged passageways only accessible by boat. At the conclusion of this unforgettable tunnel tour adventure, return your safety gear, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

Fremantle by Segway

BODY>

Experience the splendid beauty of Australia's fastest-growing city during this scenic and exhilarating Segway excursion.

Fremantle, Shipwreck Galleries, Guided Segway Tour

Depart the pier for the short drive to the Shipwreck Galleries. Upon arrival, receive your Segway orientation and safety instructions, then don your safety equipment and make some practice runs before beginning your guided Segway tour through Fremantle, western Australia's fastest-growing city.

Town Centre, Round House, Bather's Beach, Fremantle Port and Prison, Monument Hill

Along the way, cruise past the Round House, Fremantle's oldest building, then journey down the coast to Bather's Beach and Fremantle Port. Here, delve into Fremantle's maritime past, and experience the modern port's thriving art and café culture. Next, head for a visit to the grassy slopes of Monument Hill and the worn limestone walls of historic Fremantle Prison, then head back through the town centre. At the conclusion of your Segway tour, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

Fremantle’s Convicts & Maritime History

BODY>

Tour the Fremantle Prison where you will experience the chill of the prison cells before heading to the Maritime Museum to explore the history of the early explorers, the trade routes, navel defense and migration.

Fremantle Prison

Go directly to jail - do not pass GO! You are headed to the Fremantle prison - a fascinating and memorable UNESCO World Heritage Site. Depart the pier for a 15 minute trip to this incredible sandstone prison complex dates back to 1855 and was built using convict labour in Australia's early days as a penal colony. Almost 10,000 male convicts were assigned to Western Australia between 1850 and 1868. Amazingly, this house of horrors remained in use until 1991. Visit the tiny cells where convicts lived day in and day out, view the stunning art painted on the walls and the inspiring convict-made architecture. Discover how time was passed in the yards. Complete with a whipping post, gallows and solitary cells this is a monument of a system of punishment that is uncomfortably recent.

Re-board your coach and head to the Fremantle Maritime Museum where you will learn the stories of Western Australia's early explorers, trade routes, navel defense, migration and the cultural richness that has resulted.

Enjoy some free time to explore the various galleries at your own pace before the scenic drive back to the ship.

This tiny marsupial does not grow more than a foot tall and cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Upon arrival your guide will take you on a short guided walk to learn of the island's rich history before embarking on your island coach tour. Explore the beauty and tranquillity of Rottnest Island as you relax in the comfort of an air-conditioned coach; pass the historical, cultural and natural points of interest.

After your sightseeing, enjoy a casual lunch at a local restaurant, after which you will have approximately two hours of free time at your own leisure. Surrounded by coral reefs and shipwrecks, the underwater life in and around the island makes snorkeling breath-taking and beautiful (snorkeling equipment is available for hire on the island at own expense). A great way to get around the island is by bike (bike hire is also available on the island at own expense) or you can visit the Museum and Wadjemup Lighthouse.

At the conclusion of your visit, board the ferry boat back to Fremantle, where your coach will be waiting to transfer you to your ship.
