Silversea Expedition Cruises À DAKAR

DAKAR
DAKAR

Capital of Senegal, and a major gateway to Western Africa, the former colonial trading post of Dakar stamps the Cap-Vert peninsular with glorious surf-fringed beaches. Enjoy the thrum of markets - where colourful textiles are exchanged - and wander streets where jazz, sambar and mbalax spill from every ajar door. Offering tropical island-style beaches in an incongruous urban setting, Dakar is a wild and urgent experience for the senses. Watch on as surfers revel in consistent rollers on this, the most westerly peninsula of continental Africa. View more

Scuba divers can explore worlds below the surface in Dakar's diving areas, or you can head to sandy beaches like Plage des Mamelles' cove, which provide endless options for cooling off. Looking for a little more activity, loosen up and play on golf courses that unroll along the sun-kissed Senegalese coastline, or visit startling natural sites like the vivid pink water of the salty pink Lake Retba. Cultural relevance abounds in Dakar - those wanting to delve a little deeper into the dark history of Senegal should visit the House of Slaves on the UNESCO World Heritage Site listed Goree Island, or duck into the Theodore Monod Museum to pour over an incredible collection of masks, artefacts, and treasures. Sandaga Market is a full-on experience of choreographed chaos, sound and flavours. Tear into fish fresh off the boat, and don't be afraid to get your hands a little greasy while handling Dibi - the national street food - soft mutton, simmered with onions and zesty orange spice.

Excursions depuis DAKAR

18-Holes at Golf Club de Saly

Discover why luxury is par for the course during this relaxing, full-day golfing excursion with lunch at a 4-star hotel.

Golf Club de Saly

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour drive to Saly. Upon arrival, head to the Golf Club de Saly. This magnificent, 18-hole course has at least seven holes with water obstacles, and features immaculate greens surrounded by a luxurious subtropical forest with baobab, goyava, and cashew trees. Upon arrival, commence your relaxing round of golf.

Lamantin Beach Hotel

Afterward, re-board your coach and proceed to Lamantin Beach for lunch at the 5-star Lamantin Beach Hotel. At the conclusion of your meal, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and golf cart. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with soft spikes and sun protection are recommended. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Goree Island Boat & Walking Tour

A short bus transfer from the cruise pier to the Goree Island Island Ferry Terminal. A 20 minute ferry ride from Dakar takes us to Goree Island, a small tiny island with a violent past. It also served as a base for slaves between the 15th through the 18th century. Goree Island is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was the last place African Slaves saw before being deported to American destinations never to return. Now it's a sanctuary of calm, with a population of around 1,500 living in pastel-coloured houses on tranquil cobbled streets.

Enjoy a guided walking tour on Goree Island, which was a major departure point in the African Slave Trade.

After learning a little of the Island's History, we will walk to the Door-of-no-return in the House of Slaves (Maison des Esclaves), now a museum for an informative talk on Slavery from an African perspective. We will also visit the French style Catholic Church and the historical Museum. A Castle, which served as a WWII outpost, provides fantastic views of the island and downtown Dakar. We then walk back to the Goree Island Ferry terminal for the scenic boat ride back to Dakar and return to the pier and board 'Silver Dawn'.

Museum of Black Civilizations & African Renaissance

Depart the cruise pier for the short drive past the President's Palace and continue past the National Assembly, Cathedral, Independence Square and Grand Mosque and a photo stop at the University of Dakar.

Drive along the scenic coastline line to the Millenium Door, the new 'Monument of the African Renaissance' and tallest statue in Africa. At 49 meters, the bronze structure on the second Mamelles hill inaugurated in 2010. The African Renaissance Monument is taller than the Statue of Liberty, and is on top of a 100-metre high hill, and is a very impressive figure of man, woman and child pointing out towards the Atlantic Ocean. It is accessed by a large staircase of 198 steps.

From here, head for visits to the Sand Painting and Kermel Market, located near the recently-built Grand Theatre of Dakar. Also, visit the Soumbedioune Handicraft Market and Medina for African souvernirs and soak up the city tour's atmosphere. Return to Dakar and the last stop, the very impressive Museum of Black Civilizations, opened in December 2018, a repository for African art, culture and history. The Museum has space for some 18,000 artworks, but many of the galleries are not yet filled. The Museum of Black Civilizations has changed the landscape of downtown Dakar and is built in a circular shape. The architecture was inspired by traditional homes typical of southern Senegal.

Pink Lake Retba & Village Traditions

Depart the Dakar cruise pier for a scenic, 40-minute drive to Wolof Village. After a brief stop here, continue approximately 20 more miles north of Dakar and across the Niaye Greenbelt en route to Pyou, home of the Pink Lake Retba. This world-renowned lake features remarkable, pinkish-colored water due to a microorganism and its high density of salt. Sometimes it is possible due to the intensity of sun rays to even see purple.

Once at Pink Lake Retba known as Lac Rose, is Senegal's very own Dead Sea. We board 4x4 vehicles and tour the sand dunes and travel around the lake for stunning views. There are different ethnic groups and communities around the lake including Fulani Village. Visit with the villagers and drive on the beach, this being the last leg of the world famous Paris-Dakar Car Rallye.

End the 4x4 lake tour at the lodge and enjoy an authentic Senegalese lunch at Keur Salim restaurant. After some relaxing time after lunch, board your coach and drive about an hour back to the cruise pier in Dakar.

Explore the undersea beauty along the Dakar Peninsula during this scenic, half-day scuba diving excursion.

Goree or Madeleine Island and Dakar Peninsula

Depart the pier for the short drive to the Oceanium Scuba Diving Club, a specialized scuba diving organisation. Upon arrival embark your dive boat for the ride to either Goree Island or Madeleine Island, located in front of the Dakar Peninsula.

Guided Scuba Diving Session

After receiving your safety instructions and diving gear, begin your approximately 90-minute guided diving session. Along the way, explore the area's abundant coral beds, tropical fish species and marine life. Following your diving session, ride back to the dock, and then re-board your coach for the short drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of activity, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and embark/disembark the boat. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. PADI dive certification and a signed waiver are required to participate on this tour. Guests are advised to wear a swimsuit under a cover-up with boat or beach shoes, and bring sun protection and a towel from the ship. The scuba diving centre is closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Senegalese Capital & Museum

Depart the Dakar cruise terminal on a tour of the Senegalese Capital City, Dakar. Journey into the country's history, current life of the Senegalese and the hopes for the future. Visit the oldest Museum in Dakar - the IFAN Museum near the Parliament House. View art pieces in the Museum from various West Africa ethnic groups and Kingdoms and empires, including ancient Egypt, Ghana, Songai and Mandigo Empire.

The tour continues to the Ousmane Sow home-museum which houses a giant statue of Mr Ousmane Sow and is considered 1 of the most important African Sculptors of the 20th century. The famous sculptor born in Dakar, built his house with his hands, like a sculpture: a real work of art with its tiling in ocher, brown and red tones and some of the walls are covered with the materials he used for his sculptures. He died on 1st December 2016.

Once back in downtown Dakar, visit the very impressive and huge Museum of Black Civilizations, opened in December 2018, a repository for African art, culture and history. The Museum has space for some 18,000 artworks, but many of the galleries are not yet filled. The Museum of Black Civilizations has changed the landscape of downtown Dakar and is built in a circular shape. The architecture was inspired by traditional homes typical of southern Senegal.

Named after the river of the same name, Senegal is a country on Africa's west coast with a rich French-Colonial heritage and many natural attractions. The first capital of French West Africa, Saint Louis is a charming old town with Colonial architecture. Afterward, check-in to the Hotel La Maison Rose for lunch, dinner and an overnight stay. The next morning, proceed for a scenic drive to the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary, an UNESCO World Heritage Site and natural oasis formed by hundreds of miles of partially-flooded lands. Next, proceed for lunch and a 4WD journey across the tracks, national roads and dunes of the Lampoul Desert before arriving at a permanent camp situated on spectacular dunes. Upon arrival, proceed for dinner and an overnight stay in the tented camp at the Ecolodge de Lampoul. After breakfast on the third morning, drive to the Pink Lake, a shallow, saltwater lake surrounded by dunes. The water is ten-times saltier than the ocean, and, due to the high concentration of minerals, the lake often shimmers into pink. During your stop at this uniquely beautiful lake, learn about its history and how the collection of salt is organised, and observe the salt collectors plying their trade. Afterward, take a drive in a 4WD vehicle around the lake and through the dunes en route to the beach, then return to the Pink Lake. From here, a stop is made for lunch en route to Dakar Airport. Your Mid-Voyage Land Adventure continues with a scheduled flight to Casablanca, overnight and half day tour in Casablanca. After the tour, embark the ship.

After breakfast at the hotel, check-out and depart for the scenic, approximately three-hour drive to Saint Louis City. Upon arrival, take a guided tour of this charming old town, which was the first capital of the French West African colonies (AOF). Dinner and overnight accommodations in a Suite at the Hotel La Maison Rose.

DAY THREE - May 5, 2019 - Saint Louis City/Lompoul

Breakfast and a scenic drive to the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary

After breakfast at the hotel, depart for the scenic, approximately 1.5-hour drive north to the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary (Parc National des Oiseaux du Djoudj). An UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary is a natural oasis formed by hundreds of miles of partially-flooded lands.

Wetland habitats and bird species, including pelicans and flamingos

The best habitat and nesting site for over a million migratory and resident birds, this 'humid paradise' lies on the southeastern bank of the Senegal River and offers a range of wetland habitats that are especially popular with migrating birds, many of which arrive here for the winter after crossing the Sahara. Since this park is the single-most important wintering site in the region, over 400 species of birds, including pelicans, flamingos and aquatic warblers, migrate here from Europe.

Picturesque boat-ride to Djoudj Island

Upon arrival at the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary, embark a boat for a picturesque, approximately one-hour ride to Djoudj Island.

Lunch and a drive across the Lampoul Desert en route to a permanent camp on spectacular dunes

Following your visit to the Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary, a stop is made for lunch. After lunch, re-board your vehicle for the approximately four-hour drive across the tracks, national roads and dunes of the Lampoul Desert before arriving at a permanent camp situated on spectacular dunes.

Check-in, dinner and time at leisure

After check-in, enjoy some time at your leisure to explore the location in the desert. Proceed to dinner and overnight accommodations in a spacious tent with beds at the Ecolodge de Lampoul.

Please note: May is the end of the dry season, and the lagoon might be dry. If such is the case, not many pelicans may be seen. The weather in the Lampoul Desert may be a bit breezy at night; a light coat or jacket is recommended. Since the tents are situated on the dunes, guests must climb down-and-up a dune to go to the tent and back to the restaurant.

DAY FOUR - May 6, 2019 - Lampoul/Pink Lake/Dakar/Casablanca

Breakfast, a visit to Pink Lake, and off-road driving around the lake and dunes en route to the beach

The water is ten-times saltier than the ocean, and, due to the high concentration of minerals, the lake often shimmers in a hue of pink. More than 600 workers collect salt in the waters of the lake in the traditional way. During your stop at this uniquely beautiful lake, learn about its history and how the collection of salt is organised, and observe the salt collectors plying their trade. Afterward, take a drive in a 4WD vehicle around the lake and through the dunes en route to the beach, then return to the Pink Lake.

Lunch at a local restaurant

Leaving the Pink Lake, re-board your coach and proceed for lunch at a local restaurant.

Dakar Airport transfer, scheduled flight to Casablanca and a transfer to your ship

After lunch, commence the approximately 1.5-hour drive to Dakar Airport for your scheduled approximately 3.5-hour flight to Casablanca.

DAY FIVE - May 7, 2019 - Casablanca/return to the ship

Dinner and overnight accommodation

Upon arrival in Casablanca, transfer to the Four Seasons Hotel for dinner and your overnight stay. Please note that this hotel is a 'dry hotel'. No alcohol is available.

Breakfast, visit of Casablanca, and transfer to the ship

After breakfast at the hotel and check-out, depart for a sightseeing tour of Casablanca. Proceed to the awe-inspiring Hassan II Mosque. The Mosque is the second-largest mosque in the Islamic world. This magnificent building is both overwhelming in its grandeur and exquisite in its detail. The Mosque can hold 25,000 people and the foundations are built partly on land and partly over the water. Some of the ceilings are over 200 feet tall (70 meters), and a part of this amazing and sacred building has a retractable roof. The construction of the Mosque began in 1980 and was completed in 1993. After your visit at the Mosque, get off the coach to Mohamed V Square for a photo opportunity. Continue to the Notre Dame de Lourdes Church and then 'Habbous Quarter' for a short stroll through this historic part of the city, lined with souks, shops, and a warren of alleyways & surrounding the Royal Place.

Your Mid-Voyage Land Adventure concludes at the pier in time for your lunch on board Silver Whisper.

Please note: This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure involves an extensive amount of off-road driving and a moderate amount of walking, at times over uneven, natural, sandy and bumpy surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and embark/disembark the boat, and at the sites visited.
