Silversea Luxury Cruises À Collioures

The south coast of France is nothing if not beautiful. To the east you have the sparkling seas of the Riviera while to the west, the terrain becomes craggier, less built upon but no less lovely. As you travel west ports get smaller and less glossy – but remain undeniably authentic. Such is true of Collioure. This charming seaside resort might not have the mega yachts (or mega bucks) of St. Tropez and Monte-Carlo, but it certainly has a local flavour that is unique to the south-west of France. View more

So much so that the post-impressionist movement Fauvism was immortalised here. Apparently the movement was created when artists including Matisse, Picasso and Derain arrived in 1905 and realised they could not purchase black pain in the area. They were thus forced to find a creative solution to their problem. The answer was, of course, the dotty pictures that defined 20th century art. So magnetic was the region that others flocked to the area, and even today Collioure’s church is one of the most painted locations in France, with a record 242 reproductions. So perhaps the best guide to Collioure is not the usual guide books, but rather a crash course in modern art. Little seems to have changed since the painters left the seaside village, olive and lemon groves are still abundant, grape vines still line the horizon and stone cottages still stand. Cicadas still sing, fishing boats – bringing home the region’s speciality of anchovies – still float, and life carries on very much as it must have done in 1905.

Excursions depuis Collioures

Medieval Carcassonne

Take a walk through French history during this picturesque, full-day guided tour of the medieval walled city of Carcassonne. Since the pre-Roman period, a fortified settlement has existed on the hill where Carcassonne now stands. In its present form it is an outstanding example of a medieval fortified town, with its massive defenses encircling the castle and the surrounding buildings, its streets and its fine Gothic cathedral.

Carcassonne

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate two-hour drive along the highway to Carcassonne. Although this majestic site was inhabited as early as the 3rd century B.C., the expansive walled city we see today was gradually built between the 4th and 13th centuries A.D. Arguably, nowhere else in Europe exists a more intact walled city of this importance and in such an impressive setting.

Upon arrival, a short guided orientation tour of Carcassonne offers a unique insight into its past and present. This fairy-tale collection of drawbridges, towers and atmospheric cobbled streets is a must-see on any trip through this part of southern France. Its medieval core, the cité, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1997. Although both the Romans and Visigoths were here, Carcassonne really flourished under the well-to-do Trencavel family of the late 12th century.

Approximately 3.5-hour free time is afforded to have a meal on your own, and browse the myriad of shops and attractions.

At the conclusion of your visit, re-join your guide, return to the coach parking lot and re-board the coach for the approximate two-hour drive back to the pier.eak in a typical bistrot where an aperitive and tapas will be served before returning to Collioure and the pier.

Depart Collioure by coach with your guide for a 45min drive to Perpignan, the biggest city in Roussillon.

You will start your visit of Perpignan with a panoramic tour, followed by a guided walking tour in downtown.

Your guide will take you to the famous Majorca Kings Palace as well as the cathedral (interior visit subject to services that day) passing through the pedestrian commercial street, where you first will have a view on the little red castle called the Castillet over the banks of Tet River.

After the visit we will have a catalan break in a typical bistrot where an aperitive and tapas will be served before returning to Collioure and the pier.
