Silversea Expedition Cruises À Carriacou

Carriacou

The true Caribbean experience lives on in Carriacou, away from the popular tourist islands. The island is a dependency of Grenada, and one of the Grenadines, a string of islands that connect Grenada to St Vincent. The coastline is a tropical highlight with both white and black beaches. The black sand is from millennia of erosion of the volcanic core of the island. The white sand is derived from coral, ground up by fish and waves on the coral reefs that encircle the island. The sea and reefs attract swimmers, snorkellers and seabirds. About 8,000 people live here today, many in the one town of Hillsborough. Most have African heritage. Originally the Arawak and then Carib Amerindians lived on the island before the French and British competed for control. Africans were brought in as slaves for agricultural work and have retained many of their traditions. Explore history in the well-presented Museum or at ruined plantations and windmills. Walking takes you amongst tropical flowers, forests and hills. Look for the Red-footed Tortoise, Grenada Flycatcher and Lesser Antillean Bullfinch. Stroll the shorelines and admire the boats. Carriacou has a long and ongoing boat building tradition introduced by Scottish settlers in the 19th century. Many of the schooners plying the Lesser Antilles waters were built here with traditional methods. Relaxation can become at artform here. Try the rum with the locals but be careful of the most potent local drops or you may become too relaxed to return to the ship.
