Silversea Luxury Cruises À BERGEN

BERGEN

The crooked, pastel-coloured warehouses of Bergen’s World Heritage waterfront lean together charmingly, welcoming visitors to this city at the heart of Norway’s most extraordinary cinematic landscapes. It may be the country’s second largest city, but the villagey feel here always provides a warm welcome - even when the weather is living up to its famously damp reputation. Bergen’s colourful waterfront, Bryggen, is a ramshackle line-up of incredible Hanseatic warehouses, built following the devastating fire of 1702, which ransacked the city. View more

These iconic warehouses have stood proudly ever since, with Bergen growing and expanding around the colourful facades. Behind them, a labyrinth of narrow alleyways and wooden decking waits, alive with artisan craft shops and bustling galleries. Fløyen mountain watches over the city, and you can take a short but steep hike up to the panoramic viewpoints, or jump on the funicular, which trundles visitors up and down the incline. At the top, spectacular views of Bergen jutting out into the dark seas below unfold before your eyes. Wait until evening to see the sunset painting glorious golden light across the city and waves, and Bergen’s lights flickering into life. Nærøyfjorden, a deeply etched fjord nearby, is perhaps Norway’s most photographed and iconic piece of scenery. A cruise through the base of this spectacular narrow fjord, parting the glass-smooth inky waters, is an utterly humbling experience, as the claustrophobically-close slopes rise imposingly over you. Sognefjord also stretches out nearby, and is Norway’s longest fjord, adorned with plunging waterfalls and vibrant farms during summer.

Embrace the spectacular natural beauty and flavours of the Hardanger region during this panoramic, full-day sightseeing excursion.

Samnangerfjord, Kvamskogen and Steinsdalsfossen Waterfall

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 75-minute drive northeast to the Steinsdalsfossen Waterfall. En route, pass by the Samnangerfjord, then continue towards Kvamskogen, the popular weekend and holiday destination of the Bergenser (inhabitants of Bergen). The magnificent Steinsdallsfossen Waterfall actually falls away from the cliff, which enables you to take an optional walk behind the waterfall without getting wet. Following your visit, re-board your coach and head towards the Hardangerfjord.

Hardangerfjord and Steinstø Fruit Orchard

Among the favourites of the many Norwegian fjords, the Hardangerfjord is framed by mountains reflecting in the clear water, and famous for its many orchards and fruit blossoming in May. Along the way, a visit is made to the Steinstø Fruit Orchard. This lovely farm is nestled in a scenic location at the foot of the mountains above the Hardangerfjord, and has been family-owned and operated for eight generations. Upon arrival, a family member greets and escorts you on a guided walking tour through the orchard. Apples, cherries, pears, berries, and other fruit are grown here, and some of the fruit is processed and preserved. On clear days, you can see the Fonna Glacier in the distance.

Lunch and Bergen's City Centre

Following your tour, proceed for lunch with apple cake served in the farm's restaurant. After lunch, some free time is made available to browse some of the farm's products for sale. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately two-hour drive back to the pier. En route, take a short sightseeing drive through Bergen City, passing the fish and flower markets, 13th-century Bergenhus Fortress, medieval King Håkon's Hall and Rosenkrantz Tower. Time-permitting, you can leave the tour at Bryggen and remain in Bergen's city centre for independent shopping and sightseeing at your leisure, then return to the pier on your own.

Bergen Flavours on Foot

Stroll through the main streets of Bergen center which boasts top restaurants, informative museums and historic landmarks.

You will wander through this UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy, while you uncover Bergen’s rich food history and culture. You will pass the UNESCO World Heritage Site - Bryggen, Bergen’s picturesque waterfront and the famous Fish Market (Fisketorget), while enjoying some local treats all along the way. Driving along the classic alley ways of Bergen you will head toward the National Norwegian Theater, the Blue Stone, John’s Church and Lille Lungegårdsvannet. At Fjellveien you will have a wonderful view over the center of Bergen and the surrounding areas before you head back down to the city center.

Enroute you will Visit Magic Ice, with ice sculptures inspired by famous works of Norwegian and international artists such as Edvard Grieg, all made in crystal clear ice. Best of Bergen: Fantoft Stave Church & Grieg´s Home & Garden

On this introduction to lovely Bergen you will drive past all the city highlights and visit the Fantoft Stave Church and the famous composer, Evard Grieg’s, home and gardens.

As you pass through downtown Bergen you will view the old wooden Hanseatic pier, Bryggen; the medieval King Håkon’s Hall, erected during the reign of King Håkon Håkonsson; The Rosenkrantz Tower; St. Mary’s Church, built around 1170 and one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Norway; Bergen Theater; Grieghallen the modern concert hall named after Norway’s great composer, Edvard Grieg.

Inside, you can admire the traditional timber construction and elaborately carved decoration.

From spiritual faith to musical brilliance, you'll also visit Troldhaugen, home of Norway's famed composer Edvard Grieg. Troldhaugen was built in 1885 and Edvard Grieg lived here for 22 years together with his wife Nina. Grieg composed many of his best-known works in the composers hut by the shore of Lake Nordås. Enjoy a guided tour of the Villa, museum and the garden and some free time to walk around on your own afterwards.
