The capital of Iceland’s land of ice, fire and natural wonder, Reykjavik is a city like no other - blossoming among some of the world’s most vibrant and violent scenery. Home to two-thirds of Iceland’s population, Reykjavik is the island’s only real city, and a welcoming and walkable place - full of bicycles gliding along boulevards or battling the wind when it rears up. Fresh licks of paint brighten the streets, and an artistic and creative atmosphere embraces studios and galleries - as well as the kitchens where an exciting culinary scene is burgeoning. Plot your adventures in the city's hip bars and cosy cafes, or waste no time in venturing out to Iceland’s outdoor adventures.
Reykjavik’s buildings stand together in a low huddle - below the whip of winter’s winds - but the magnificent Hallgrímskirkja church is a solid exception, with its bell tower rising resolutely over the city.
Ler mais Iceland’s largest church's design echoes the lava flows that have shaped this remote land and boasts a clean and elegant interior. The Harpa Concert Hall’s sheer glass facade helps it to assimilate into the landscape, mirroring back the city and harbour. Its LED lights shimmer in honour of Iceland’s greatest illuminated performance – the northern lights.
Walk in the crusts between continents, feel the spray from bursts of geysers and witness the enduring power of Iceland’s massive waterfalls. Whether you want to sizzle away in the earth-heated geothermal pools, or hike to your heart’s content, you can do it all from Reykjavik - the colourful capital of this astonishing outdoor country.

Located on Greenland’s relatively rarely visited rugged east coast, Skoldungen Fjord has enchanting scenery with towering mountains tipped with snow, ice-scraped valley sides and sculptured icebergs in shades of white and blue. At the top of the fjord one can easily see the retreating state of the Thrym Glacier. The U-shaped fjord offers spectacular scenery and as an extra perk, it is not uncommon to see whales in the fjord.

Connecting the Denmark Strait with Davis Strait, Prins Christian Sund offers a protected course from southeastern to southwestern Greenland, and is one of South Greenland’s most dramatic natural features. The water is generally placid and the crisp scent of ice fills the air. On either side of the Sund, waterfalls stream down sharp, wrinkled mountainsides. Depending on weather conditions, icebergs that glitter in the sun may be constant companions during the passage. Born of compacted ancient snows that formed glaciers and now calve into the sound at the glacier’s edge, each iceberg is different from the next.

Aapilattoq is a small settlement near the western end of Prins Christian Sund in southwestern Greenland. In the local Greenlandic language the name means, "sea anemone". This small village of 130 inhabitants, hidden behind a prominent rock, offers a good insight into the life of Greenlandic Inuit. A stroll through the village will reveal a small school and a church, along with the likely possibility of seeing a polar bear skin drying in the wind behind a local dwelling. People have lived off the land in the area around Aapilattoq since the 19th century. The tradition continues today as most people here hunt and fish to make a living.

Nanortalik lies in a scenic area surrounded by steep mountainsides and is Greenland’s tenth-largest and most southerly town with less than 1500 inhabitants. The town’s name means the “place of polar bears”, which refers to the polar bears that used to be seen floating offshore on summer’s ice floes. Nanortalik has an excellent open-air museum that gives a broad picture of the region from Inuit times to today. Part of the exhibition is a summer hunting camp, where Inuit in traditional clothing describe aspects of their ancestor’s customs and lifestyle.

Uunartoq is a small island in South Greenland a short distance east of what once was considered the largest settlement in Greenland. The island has hot springs that were renowned as far back as the days of the Norse for their healing effects. Three naturally heated streams have been channeled to flow into a knee-deep and stone-lined pool. While one unwinds by soaking in the steaming waters, one can watch icebergs that either clog the fjord to the north or come floating by.

The largest town in southern Greenland, Qaqortoq has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Upon arrival in this charming southern Greenland enclave, it's easy to see why. Qaqortoq rises quite steeply over the fjord system around the city, offering breath-taking panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains, deep, blue sea, Lake Tasersuag, icebergs in the bay, and pastoral backcountry. Although the earliest signs of ancient civilization in Qaqortoq date back 4,300 years, Qaqortoq is known to have been inhabited by Norse and Inuit settlers in the 10th and 12th centuries, and the present-day town was founded in 1774. In the years since, Qaqortoq has evolved into a seaport and trading hub for fish and shrimp processing, tanning, fur production, and ship maintenance and repair.

Northeast of Qaqortoq and at the end of a fjord, Hvalsey is one of the best examples of South Greenland’s many scattered ruins from the Norse period. Today the area is used for sheep-grazing, but until the 15th century the settlement at Hvalsey, and specifically Hvalsey’s church, played an important part. Christianity had spread its influence throughout Europe and eventually had reached remote Greenland, where it established itself in the country in 1000 AD. Hvalsey Church was built in the 14th century and is the best preserved of the churches in Greenland from that period. Apart from the church walls, historical ruins from the time of the Norse are just a few meters away.

Acclaimed for its unearthly landscape, Woody Point is probably as close to Mars as you will ever get in this lifetime. Situated on the west coast of the island, the Tablelands behind Woody Point in the Gros Morne National Park are composed of peridotite — like much of the surface of Mars — and NASA, the Canadian Space Agency, plus others are studying this unique land form searching for insights into possible bacterial life on the red planet. The story of the Tablelands earned Gros Morne its World Heritage Site status from UNESCO in 2010, and the area remains a geological wonder, showcasing a time when the continents of Africa and North America collided. When the plates struck 485 million years ago, the peridotite was pushed to the surface, and remained above sea level. The rock lacks the nutrients to sustain plant life, thus giving the Tablelands a barren, isolated appearance.
Ler mais As the name suggests, the flat topped mountains dwarf the tiny village (population 281!), yet Woody Point has retained its character and the historic houses and buildings dating from 1870 have been beautifully maintained.

Baddeck is the most highly developed tourist center in Cape Breton. Situated at the start of the famous Cabot Trail, the town of 1,064 inhabitants enjoys an international reputation as a fine resort. Baddeck has long been associated with the great inventor Alexander Graham Bell, who built a home here in 1885; it is still owned by his family. While traveling by steamer through the Bras d’Or Lakes, Bell was captivated by the region’s scenic beauty. One of Baddeck’s most notable attractions includes the Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site, featuring the accomplishments of the famed inventor.
The resort is the main town on Bras d’Or Lakes. The area surrounding Baddeck, with steep mountains, rocky inlets and dense forests, is often compared to the Scottish Highlands. The Bras d’Or Lakes, a vast, almost-landlocked inlet of the sea, attracts people from all over the world to cruise the serene, unspoiled coves and islands.
Ler mais
Many of the early settlers of this part of Nova Scotia actually came here from Scotland; their cultural heritage has been retained in many ways. St. Ann’s is the home of North America’s only Gaelic College, and the Nova Scotia Highland Village provides insight into Highland Scots’ way of life. Pier Information The ship will be docked at the main pier. Most of Baddeck is within easy walking distance. A few taxis are available for trips further afield.
Shopping Regional handicrafts are found in upscale gift shops and art galleries. The currency is the Canadian dollar.
Cuisine Lobster and seafood are a good choice, as are dishes with a Scottish flavor. There are a number of restaurants to choose from.
Other Sites Alexander Graham Bell National Historic Site
The site is a tribute to the great inventor who spent his summers in Baddeck and is buried on the mountain top above his mansion. About 1/4 mile from the pier up on the hillside, the museum features three exhibit halls that tell the story of Bell’s incredible life and work, including a display about the invention of the telephone. People of all ages find visiting here an entertaining and educational experience. Following the Silversea Experience there will be a shuttle service available between the pier and the Museum. The entrance fee is $2.50 per person.
Gaelic College
About 12 miles away at St. Ann’s is the home of North America’s only Gaelic College, with the Great Hall of the Clans and a Scottish gift shop.
Bell Bay Golf Club
This new world-class course, located a short distance beyond the Alexander Graham Bell Museum, should be in full operation by the time the Silver Cloud calls at Baddeck. Guests interested in playing may inquire with the Tour Manager on board about details and advance reservations.
The Cabot Trail
This 184-mile-long highway is named after John Cabot, the great navigator and explorer who fist sighted Cape Breton Island in 1497. It is noted for its exceptional natural beauty. The tour of the Cabot Trail requires a minimum of 7 hours so we are unable to offer it during our stay in Baddeck.

Home to a unique 18th-century fortress city, visit Louisbourg to be transported back in time, to an immersive recreation of life in an authentic fortified French outpost. Named Louisbourg after the French King Louis XIV - this easterly settlement was favoured thanks to its position close to the French colonies, and the expedited route it offered across the waves back to Europe. Set among Cape Breton Island's thrilling, rugged coastal scenery, bask in Louisbourg's glorious seascapes and evocative, centuries-old history.
Located close to the most easterly point of Nova Scotia, and overlooking the entrance to the St Lawrence River from the Atlantic, there were few better locations to build such an imposing fortress, as the French and British jostled for these lands. Louisbourg is one of North America’s most impressive and was constructed with 2.5 miles of thick walls around it.
Ler mais While practically impenetrable from the sea, it was undone by a land assault in 1745, and ultimately in 1758 - when it was largely destroyed by the British, swaying the course of Canadian history in the process.
Now painstakingly reconstructed, you can enter a timewarp to experience life in this unique fortress. Walk streets that echo with the clinking of smithy hammers, and feel the full force of canons shaking the ground as they fire. Be sure to try some oaky local rum too – the vice of choice for Louisbourg’s former residents. Nearby, stroll along the stirring coastline to the tip of the peninsula, which is crowned by Lighthouse Point. A popular spot to enjoy some sandwiches and a sit-down, it’s the site of the first lighthouse to be constructed in Canada, all the way back in 1734. The handheld fog horn can still be wound up to blare out warnings through the gloomy blanket.

A city that thrives on a diet of music, outdoor events and ocean-faring history, Nova Scotia's capital - and Atlantic Canada's largest conurbation - oozes salt-licked charm. The star-shaped fortress of Halifax Citadel sits above the city, while down below, Halifax revolves around its bustling harbour. Here, jet-skis skid across the water and heritage ships jaunt out to scenic offshore islands. Music carries on the waterfront's breeze as summer’s events play out, while a hefty population of pubs and restaurants provides all the space required for sitting back and relaxing.
The shorefront boardwalk invites you on a gentle stroll along the waves, wandering back through Halifax's history. The Canadian Museum of Immigration waits at Pier 21 and was the doorway to a country of opportunity for so many - with over a million immigrants taking their first footsteps into Canada here.
Ler mais The pier's wooden boards are dotted with cafes, craft shops and artist studios. Sail deeper into seafaring heritage at the maritime museum. As the closest city to the sinking of the Titanic, recovered victims were transported to - and many were buried - in Halifax. The story, and items from the doomed vessel, are displayed in the museum's collection.
Peggy's Cove lighthouse is nearby, and this immaculate little lighthouse is one of Canada's favourite, watching out stoically over the Atlantic's waves. With rich pickings available from its coastal location, the fruits of the sea are served up in the fryers of Halifax's varied restaurants - try seared scallops and juicy mussels. Round off any meal with a buttery blueberry grunt dessert – delicious when served up warm with a dollop of melting vanilla ice cream.
