Silversea Luxury Cruises A USHUAIA

Silversea Luxury Cruises - Ushuaia, Argentina

At 55 degrees latitude south, Ushuaia (pronounced oo-swy-ah) is closer to the South Pole than to Argentina's northern border with Bolivia. It is the capital and tourism base for Tierra del Fuego, the island at the southernmost tip of Argentina.Although its stark physical beauty is striking, Tierra del Fuego's historical allure is based more on its mythical past than on rugged reality. The island was inhabited for 6,000 years by Yámana, Haush, Selk'nam, and Alakaluf Indians. View more

But in 1902 Argentina, eager to populate Patagonia to bolster its territorial claims, moved to initiate an Ushuaian penal colony, establishing the permanent settlement of its most southern territories and, by implication, everything in between. When the prison closed in 1947, Ushuaia had a population of about 3,000, made up mainly of former inmates and prison staff. Today the Indians of Darwin's "missing link" theory are long gone—wiped out by diseases brought by settlers and by indifference to their plight—and the 60,000 residents of Ushuaia are hitching their star to tourism. The city rightly (if perhaps too loudly) promotes itself as the southernmost city in the world (Puerto Williams, a few miles south on the Chilean side of the Beagle Channel, is a small town). You can make your way to the tourism office to get your clichéd, but oh-so-necessary, "Southernmost City in the World" passport stamp. Ushuaia feels like a frontier boomtown, at heart still a rugged, weather-beaten fishing village, but exhibiting the frayed edges of a city that quadrupled in size in the '70s and '80s and just keeps growing. Unpaved portions of Ruta 3, the last stretch of the Pan-American Highway, which connects Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, are finally being paved. The summer months (December through March) draw more than 120,000 visitors, and dozens of cruise ships. The city is trying to extend those visits with events like March's Marathon at the End of the World and by increasing the gamut of winter activities buoyed by the excellent snow conditions.A terrific trail winds through the town up to the Martial Glacier, where a ski lift can help cut down a steep kilometer of your journey. The chaotic and contradictory urban landscape includes a handful of luxury hotels amid the concrete of public housing projects. Scores of "sled houses" (wooden shacks) sit precariously on upright piers, ready for speedy displacement to a different site. But there are also many small, picturesque homes with tiny, carefully tended gardens. Many of the newer homes are built in a Swiss-chalet style, reinforcing the idea that this is a town into which tourism has breathed new life. At the same time, the weather-worn pastel colors that dominate the town's landscape remind you that Ushuaia was once just a tiny fishing village, snuggled at the end of the Earth. As you stand on the banks of the Canal Beagle (Beagle Channel) near Ushuaia, the spirit of the farthest corner of the world takes hold. What stands out is the light: at sundown the landscape is cast in a subdued, sensual tone; everything feels closer, softer, and more human in dimension despite the vastness of the setting. The snowcapped mountains reflect the setting sun back onto a stream rolling into the channel, as nearby peaks echo their image—on a windless day—in the still waters.Above the city rise the last mountains of the Andean Cordillera, and just south and west of Ushuaia they finally vanish into the often-stormy sea. Snow whitens the peaks well into summer. Nature is the principal attraction here, with trekking, fishing, horseback riding, wildlife spotting, and sailing among the most rewarding activities, especially in the Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego (Tierra del Fuego National Park).

Depart the pier aboard a Land Rover Defender vehicle and begin your approximate one-hour drive north along National Route 3 to the glacial valleys area. As you make your way to Carvajal Valley, feast your eyes with the view of Mount Olivia guarding a valley surrounded by snowy peaks, dense forest and marshes, where the off-road will take you for some 45 minutes up to an hour of thrilling tracks.

A winter resort and sled dog kennel will open its doors for you to enjoy a light refreshment and an opportunity for your last photos before returning to the ship. A brief photo stop will be made en route at Playa Larga before the drive back to the pier via minibus.

Some guests will experience the tour in reverse order departing the pier in a minibus and returning in the 4WD vehicle.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking and rough, off-road driving over bumpy and uneven surfaces. This tour is recommended for guests in good physical condition and is not suitable for guests with back and/or neck problems, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. We suggest guests dress in comfortable seasonal attire and wear appropriate footwear for outdoor activities. The vehicles may get stuck in the mud. Restrooms are available at the end of the ride; during the ride, a stop can be made along the roadside. Participants on this tour are required to sign a waiver. This tour is conducted in Land Rovers with different seating throughout the vehicle. Guests will be asked to alternate between front and rear seats. This tour is quite rustic.

Tierra del Fuego National Park

Experience the stunning natural beauty and wildlife of Tierra del Fuego National Park and Sea Wolves Island during this memorable, full-day excursion via coach, train and catamaran.

Train Ride

Depart the pier for the coastal drive along Maipú Avenue, then pass by the airport en route to Tierra del Fuego National Park, located approximately seven miles (about 11 kilometres) from town. Upon arrival at 'The End of the World' Station, board an antique wagon of the Ferrocarril Austral Fueguino, the first train to operate inside an Argentine national park. Your narrated ride follows a portion of the Pipo River and along the original Terre plain. A backdrop of mountains adds to the impressive scenery of Tierra del Fuego National Park. Along the way, a photo stop is made at the Macarena Cascade.

Tierra del Fuego National Park

Your train ride passes through parts of this rugged wilderness, and reveals the unspoiled natural beauty of the world's southernmost national park. This nature reserve provides refuge to the grey fox, guanaco, Patagonian woodpecker, hawk, and steamer duck. At the conclusion of the 12-mile (19-kilometre) trip, re-board your coach at the Tierra del Fuego National Park Station and head for Lapataia Bay, the southernmost tip of the continent and one of the highlights of your visit. Along the way, photo stops are made at the park's most scenic viewpoints.

Catamaran Cruise

At Lapataia Bay, embark an enclosed catamaran for a two-hour cruise along the Beagle Channel, and an opportunity to view the wildlife of Sea Wolves Island at close range. As your catamaran slowly circles the small, rocky outcrop, observe sea lions, seals and seabirds. Beverages, empanadas, sausage and cheeses are served en route. During the return ride, take in panoramic views of the town and the dramatic mountain backdrop as the catamaran approaches Ushuaia. Upon arrival back at the pier, disembark your catamaran and commence the brief walk back to the ship.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 500 metres (1640 feet). Embarking and disembarking the catamaran at Lapataia Bay involves walking on worn planks and negotiating some steps. Due to unpredictable weather, we recommend wearing a sweater or windbreaker and bringing a light raincoat. The tour sequence may vary depending on the number of participants. Depending on the number of ships in port, the catamaran may dock at the Touristic Port, which is located approximately 656-984 feet (about 200-300 metres) from the ship's berth. If possible, the catamaran will dock ship-side. Remember to bring your camera. The order of venues visited may vary.

Tierra del Fuego Trekking & Canoeing

Embrace the spectacular natural beauty of Tierra del Fuego National Park and its surrounds during this panoramic, half-day trekking and canoeing excursion.

Tierra del Fuego National Park, Lake Roca, Ovando River and Verde Lagoon

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive to Tierra del Fuego National Park. Upon arrival, head to Lake Roca. After receiving your safety and paddling instructions, embark your canoe and begin the canoeing portion of your tour. Paddle along Lake Roca en route to the crystal-clear waters of the Ovando River, which empties into the Verde Lagoon and is one of the most picturesque areas of the park.

Lapataia Bay, Flora and Fauna, Lake Roca and a Picnic Lunch

On the approach to Lapataia Bay, look for petrels, albatrosses, steamer ducks and penguins. Upon reaching Lapataia Bay, disembark your canoe and begin your approximately one-hour hike along some short paths in the area. Along the way, take in some of South America's most beautiful natural scenery, which abounds with winder bark, fire bush and a variety of beech trees. Following your hike, transfer back to Lake Roca, where a picnic lunch awaits your return. After lunch, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking, standing and paddling, at times over uneven ground, hills and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and embark/disembark the canoe. This tour is recommended for guests in good physical condition, and is not suitable for pregnant guests, guests with back and/or neck problems, guests with heart and/or respiratory problems, guests with limited mobility, and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing in layers with flat, closed-toe sneakers or hiking shoes, and bring sun protection and a towel from the ship; rubber boots and overalls are provided for the canoeing portion of the tour. Guests must be at least ten years old to participate on this tour. Although frequently encountered on this type of tour, animal sightings are not guaranteed. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Ushuaia Flight-Seeing by Helicopter

Experience the 'End of the World' from a unique perspective during this exhilarating flight-seeing excursion.

Ushuaia City, Port and Bay, Mount Susana and Martial Glacier

Depart the pier for the short drive to the Ushuaia Heliport. After receiving your safety and flight instructions, board your helicopter and lift-off for your unforgettable, 45-minute flight-seeing adventure over Ushuaia, known as the 'End of the World'. Your route begins with a flight towards the eastern slope of Mount Susana, where you can see an area cleared by the former prisoners of Ushuaia. While flying over Ushuaia City, see the former prison building, Port of Ushuaia, imposing Martial Glacier and lovely Bay of Ushuaia.

Le Cloche, Andes Mountains and Champagne

Upon landing at Le Cloche, located high in the Andes Mountains, proceed for champagne and cheese accompanied by breath-taking panoramic vistas of your surrounds. At the conclusion of your visit, board a coach for the short drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking for approximately 55 yards (about 50 metres), with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and board/de-board the helicopter. This tour is not suitable for guests prone to airsickness, guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Warm, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Guests must be at least ten years old to participate on this tour. Guests must weigh less than 275 pounds (about 125 kilograms) to participate on this tour. Guests must be at least 21 years old to be served alcoholic beverages. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions. The tour sequence may vary. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Ushuaia on Horseback

Take in the beauty of Ushuaia's nature in the most natural way, on horseback.

Begin your tour with a short drive to Relinchos del Hipico, Ushuaia's Horseback Riding Club, where you receive a safety briefing and are directed to your designated horse to begin your journey across Tierra del Fuego, the end of the world. Ride alongside the slope of Mount Susana towards the Beagle Channel coast and through the forest, enjoying the pure air and a close encounter with Fuegian nature at its best.

After the ride, return to Club Hipico for a chance to sample the traditional Argentinean beverage called mate, before your return to ship.

Please note: This tour travels through steep and rough terrain and is recommended for guests in good physical condition. This tour is not suitable for guests with back or neck problems, or for those who may be pregnant. We suggest guests dress in seasonal clothing with long pants and wear closed-toe shoes and sun protection. Minimum age to participate is 15 with an accompanying parent. Participants weighing over 220 pounds (100 kg / 15.74 stone) must advise the Shore Concierge Staff to inquire whether an appropriate horse can be arranged for their weight.

Ushuaia, The Prison & The End of The World

Discover the dark history of some of Ushuaia' first residents and their fate during this half-day tour of the facility that housed the most dangerous people in Argentina and ride the train they built.

Old Prison Museum

The prison played an important role in the history of Ushuaia; its' staff lived in town, and the prisoners spent much of their time cutting wood in the forest surrounding the prison and building the town. During your visit, learn about the life and hardships of the inmates before the prison was closed down in 1947. Memorabilia from the last inmates of the prison can still be seen in the old cells.

End of the World Train

The prisoners built what we now know as the End of the World Train and worked in the fields of the cold province of Tierra del Fuego. Your tour will continue to the railway station to board the Tierra del Fuego Southern Railway. This narrow-gauge railway is the original one used by the inmates of the penal settlements, which ran until 1947. The train crosses the Pipo River, across the 'Canadon del Toro,' and on into the Tierra del Fuego National Park. At the end of your fascinating train trip, and before returning to the Ushuaia, continue by coach to Bahia Ensenada for a photo stop that affords excellent views of the Beagle Channel and beyond.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking with some stairs to climb and is suitable for guests with limited mobility; however it is not wheelchair accessible. We suggest guests dress in seasonal attire and wear flat walking shoes. The order of venues may vary. A minimum number of guests per guide is required to operate this programme.

3NT PRE-CRUISE: CHILEAN WINE ROUTE

Enjoy a short introduction to the famed Chilean Wine Route. The Colchagua Valley lies between Chile's capital and the Pacific Coast, with an ideal climate for the robust reds - Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, etc. - that have caused such a stir in the wine world. Visit two wineries and the Colchagua Museum and experience how the near perfect environmental conditions allow the grapes to mature slowly and yield wines bursting with flavour.

Please note: Guests participating in this program should schedule their flights into Santiago Airport.

Day 1 - SANTIAGO

Upon arrival at Santiago Airport, you are met and transferred to your hotel. The balance of the day is at your leisure. If your flight arrives in the early morning, you may wish to reserve an additional night to guarantee immediate check-in upon arrival. Dinner this evening is served at the hotel.

Overnight at the Sheraton San Cristobal Tower - Santiago, Chile.

Day 2 - SANTIAGO / SANTA CRUZ

Following breakfast this morning, meet your guide for the 2.5h drive to the Colchagua Valley. The Andes mountains provide a dramatic backdrop to the morning. The valley itself is prized for formidable red wines and is home to over 30 wineries. Inhabited for over 10,000 years, this valley's aridity has preserved hundreds of sites making this area an archaeological gold mine of sand-preserved mummies, fossilized dinosaur footprints, and a nice cool weather to grow succulent grape vines.

Originally from Bordeaux, a region known as the birthplace of the world's great red wines, the Malbec variety is known for its intense cherry-red color, sweet, friendly tannins, and pronounced notes of fruits and spices. Although it is most often associated with Argentina, it is also very successfully grown Chile. Viña Viu Manent, located in the heart of the Colchagua Valley, was a pioneer in producing Malbec in Chile when it began 20 years ago. In 1993 this family-owned and operated winery made Chile's first 100% Malbec wine from grapes grown on vines that were nearly a century old.

Lunch is served this afternoon at a local restaurant.

This afternoon, spend some time at the Colchagua Museum. This private institution includes a collection of nearly 7,000 items mainly related to the disciplines of Paleontology, Archeology, History of Chile and much more. Few visitors can imagine that behind its modest facade, typical of the Chilean colonial time, one can find an exhibit of the one of the most dramatic rescues of modern times - an almost exact replica of the underground refuge of "San Jose" mine and the "Fenix" capsule that rescued the 33 trapped miners.

At the end of your visit, check-in to your hotel. Take some time to relax and freshen-up before dinner is served at the hotel.

Overnight at the Santa Cruz Plaza Hotel - Santa Cruz, Chile

*Please note, there are no 5-star properties in Santa Cruz. This property is considered a 4-star hotel and offers comfortable, though not lavish, accommodations.

Day 3 - SANTA CRUZ / SANTIAGO

Breakfast is served at your hotel this morning. Then it's time to meet your guide again for a visit to the boutique Neyen de Apalta winery, where so-called 'new world' wines are produced with the help of the unique soil and well-aged vines. Thought extinct for more than a century in its native Bordeaux, the Colchagua valley is now the best place in the world to sample wines made from the recently rediscovered Carménère grape.

The Carmenère and Cabernet Sauvignon vines that were planted in 1890 now produce excellent fruit due to their deep roots and natural balance. The tour of the winery will allow you to appreciate their hundred-year-old grapevines dating back to late nineteenth century, as well as both its modern vinification techniques and the historical cellar ending with a wine tasting.

Lunch today is served picnic-style.

Return to Santiago this afternoon and enjoy the balance of the day at your leisure. Dinner tonight is on your own account.

Overnight at the Sheraton San Cristobal Tower- Santiago, Chile

Day 4 - SANTIAGO / USHUAIA

After an early breakfast and check-out, meet your guide to return to the airport for the charter flight to Ushuaia. With luck you'll have another wonderful view of Andes Mountains from a completely different perspective.

At this site you will see the Ahu Nau Nau partially restored in 1978 by Rapa Nui Archeologist Sergio Rapu. Located in this same area is the Ahu Ature Huki. A tasty boxed lunch is served in a shaded area at Anakena Beach or at Rano Raraku Volcano.

3NT POST-CRUISE: CHILEAN WINE ROUTE

Enjoy a short introduction to the famed Chilean Wine Route. The Colchagua Valley lies between Chile's capital and the Pacific Coast, with an ideal climate for the robust reds - Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, etc. - that have caused such a stir in the wine world. Visit two wineries and the Colchagua Museum and experience how the near perfect environmental conditions allow the grapes to mature slowly and yield wines bursting with flavour.

Please note: Guests participating in this program should schedule their flights from Santiago Airport.

Day 1 - SANTIAGO

Upon arrival at Santiago Airport, you are met and transferred to your hotel. The balance of the day is at your leisure.

Perito Moreno and Torres del Paine

Situated on the southern border of Lake Argentina near the edge of the southern Patagonian Ice Field, the small, picturesque village of El Calafate is the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park, home to the massive Perito Moreno Glacier. One of the world's few remaining advancing glaciers, the Perito Moreno Glacier is currently grinding its way down the Cordillera directly into an arm of the enormous Lake Argentino, whose icy, ever-shifting landscape is ideal for hiking and sightseeing. Spectacular Torres del Paine National Park is a true spectacle with its huge granite towers, which Chilean Nobel-winning poet Pablo Neruda once described as "the last scream of the Andes before they surrender to the ocean", and a myriad of flora and fauna. An area of sheer natural beauty and unique landscapes, Torres del Paine makes for an unforgettable travel experience. Considered the jewel of Chilean Patagonia, Torres del Paine abounds with wildlife, and is home to the beautiful Salto Grande Waterfall and blue-coloured Laguna Amarga Lagoon. A declared International Biosphere Reserve, Grey Lake features spectacular, electric-blue icebergs. The Grey Glacier, which covers an astounding area of approximately 100 square miles (about 259 square kilometres) is part of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, one of the largest continental stretches of ice. Puerto Natales, a rambling town spread along the sloping coast of the Señoret Canal between the Ultima Esperanza Sound and Almirante Montt Gulf, boasts a stunning location with exquisite views of a grassy peninsula and glacier-capped peaks in the distance. Experience the breath-taking glacial beauty of Perito Moreno and Torres del Paine in a fun-filled and exciting new way during this unforgettable, four-night overland excursion to southern Patagonia. Following an airport transfer and flight from Ushuaia to El Calafate, transfer to the 4-star Posada Los Alamos Hotel for check-in, dinner and an overnight stay. After breakfast the next morning, transfer to the Punta Bandera Pier for an incredibly scenic boat-ride to see the Perito Moreno Glacier, Patagonian Steppe and Andean Forest. Along the way, stroll along the walkways and footbridges in front of this majestic glacier, and hear the cracks and roars of Perito Moreno. Next, take a guided mini-trek over the Perito Moreno Glacier's millenarian ice field and see the magnificent glacier's front wall, then walk along the lake shore to the edge of the glacier. Here, don a pair of crampons and begin your exhilarating glacier walk. Explore the fascinating landscape of the glaciers; streams, small lagoons, gullies, crevasses, and plenty of ice formations of the most incredible blues. At the conclusion of your visit, transfer back to the hotel. Following a Patagonian dinner at the 'Mako, Fuego y Vino' restaurant and an overnight stay at the Posada Los Alamos Hotel, check-out and drive to the Chilean border for a welcome reception, lunch at a local inn and a visit to Torres del Paine National Park. Upon arrival, take a guided hike to the panoramic viewpoint Salto Grande Waterfall and blue-coloured Laguna Amarga Lagoon. Following dinner, an overnight stay and breakfast at the Rio Serrano Hotel, take a scenic drive along Nordenskjold Lake towards beautiful Grey Lake. Upon arrival, take an easy hike along a trail leading to the shore of the lake with its spectacular, electric-blue icebergs. Afterward, drive to Puerto Natales for lunch and some free time for independent exploration before continuing on to Punta Arenas. Upon arrival, take a sightseeing drive through the city, then transfer for check-in, dinner and an overnight stay at the Cabo de Hornos Hotel. After breakfast at the hotel, check-out, meet your guide and transfer to Punta Arenas Airport for your scheduled, approximately two-hour, ten-minute flight to Puerto Montt. About the Perito Moreno Glacier

The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the world's few remaining advancing glaciers, currently grinding its way down the Cordillera directly into an arm of the enormous Lake Argentino. About every three years, the glacier cuts off the flow of water into the lake, resulting in an immense accumulation of pressure as the water behind the glacier rises.

Perito Moreno Glacier, Patagonian Steppe and Andean Forest, Walkways and Footbridges

During this full-day excursion to see the Perito Moreno Glacier, travel across the Patagonian Steppe and Patagonian Andean Forest, home to the distinctive notro tree with its intense red flowers in spring. Upon arrival, take a stroll along the walkways in front of the glacier, which forms the source basin of Argentina and Chile glaciers. Walk the footbridges to catch majestic views, and hear the cracks and roars of the incredible living mass that is Perito Moreno.

Magnificent glacier wall, ice field and Lake Argentino

With an approximately 3.1-mile-long (about five-kilometre-long) front wall soaring approximately 180 feet (about 60 meters) above the lake and approximately 99 square-mile (about 257-square-kilometer) of ice field surface, the Perito Moreno Glacier currently grinds its way down the mountains directly into an arm of the enormous Lake Argentino.

Mini-trek over the Perito Moreno Glacier's millenarian ice field

Next, take a guided mini-trek over the Perito Moreno Glacier's millenarian ice field. Beginning at the pier in Bajo de las Sombras port, sail across the Rico Arm, and marvel at the breath-taking views of the Perito Moreno Glacier's front wall.

Lake shore walk towards the edge of the glacier

Afterward, continue on to the opposite shore. Here, mountain guides welcome and lead you to a small shelter, from which small groups of less than 20 guests take guided walking treks along the lake's shore, and towards the edge of the glacier. Next, the ice guides help you to put on a pair of crampons and explain how to use them.

Glacial-trek and ice formations

The following two-hour circuit introduces you to the fascinating landscape of the glaciers; streams, small lagoons, gullies, crevasses, and plenty of ice formations of the most incredible blues. This moderate trek take place over an ice surface that is irregular, but firm and safe.

Guests whose weight exceeds twice their height in centimetres, less 100, cannot participate in the glacier-trek (e.g. for guests with a height of 1.70 metres: 170 minus 100 = 70 x 2 = 140 kilograms). Guests wearing less than a ladies' size-five shoes (or European size-35) cannot participate on the glacier-trek, as there are no crampons available in smaller sizes.

Alternative Program: boat-ride along the De Los Tempanos Canal of Argentino Lake

Guests unable to participate in the mini-trekking portion of the tour may opt for an approximately one-hour boat-ride along the De Los Tempanos Canal of Argentino Lake to admire the northern face of the Perito Moreno Glacier from the water. Shortly after departing the port, the northern face of the glacier can be observed from a totally different perspective than that of the catwalks. When close to the glacier, the boat sails its whole front, according to the allowed distances that guarantee participants' safety. The aim is to admire the landscape, and enjoy both the silence and roar that announces the glacier's pieces breaking off, and falling into the water. After witnessing this natural phenomenon, continue to the opposite shore.
