Silversea Luxury Cruises A TOULON

Built around a sheltered bay, with 1,700-foot Mount Faron as an impressive backdrop, Toulon is an important naval port and a city of industry and manufacturing. Its large harbor serves as the base for the French navy's Mediterranean fleet and as the home to a sizeable marina, with yachts and pleasure boats adding bright splashes of color. Toulon was the site where Napoleon Bonaparte first made a name for himself in 1793 during a siege in which the English, who had taken over Toulon, were expelled. View more

During World War II, the bulk of the French fleet anchored off Toulon was scuttled by French crews to prevent its acquisition by occupying German forces. The city was liberated in 1944 by French troops. A maze of pedestrian streets constitutes the heart of old Toulon. Shops and colorful stalls make it an attractive area to explore. Avenue de la République runs parallel to the waterfront. At the western edge of the quay is the Naval Museum featuring an excellent collection of old and new ship models, figureheads, paintings and other items related to Toulon’s maritime history. The town’s attractions can be seen in a fairly short time. Most visitors come here to explore the hinterland and other parts of the Riviera.

A Stroll in Bandol & Wine Tasting at Chateau Pibarnon

Bandol

Bandol has been founded in 1595 and built around a small military fort. A pleasant resort town nestled near a pretty bay. It is one of the Provence's most internationally recognized wine regions. Enjoy a stroll through the serene port, lined with palm trees before having a pause in the cobbled streets. Spend your free time at leisure, exploring the promenade, popping into a café or boutique and soaking up the quaint Provencal atmosphere

Château Pibarnon

Then, drive to Château Pibarnon, which offers an old 'marc de Mourvedre' older than 20 years. Produced and bottled on the estate after 19 years of aging, this brandy with a suave and elegant nose develops aromas of raisin, plum, prune and sweet spices. Located in a grandiose landscape in the heart of the Bandol region, it is a unique terroir. In a quarter of a century, Château de Pibarnon has become one of the major references of the AOC Bandol. This reputation was gained through exceptional land, unparalleled in the rest of the region. The Saint-Victor family has successfully carried this gift of nature over the years. It is located high in the mountains overlooking the Mediterranean Bay of La Ciotat. At 300 metres above sea level, the vines, grown in a stunning amphitheater-style seating are the highest in the Bandol appellation. At Château Pibarnon. 26.5 hectares of vines from a total of 48 hectares which are dedicated to red wine production. The clay and limestone soil from the Triassic era (200 hundred million years ago) is unique to Pibarnon and ideal for growing mourvedre, whilst the high altitude means there is no risk of fog or rot.

Enjoy a wine tasting along with some local products before starting the 45-minute drive back to the pier.
