Silversea Luxury Cruises A Sal

Sal

Sal, literally meaning salt in Portuguese, takes its name for the two large salt ponds that were discovered on the island by European explorers in 1460. Like much of the Cape Verde archipelago, Sal lay relatively dormant for much of the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, only to find fame in the 18th when savvy settlers capitalised on its eponymous mineral. By 1830 Sal had become a thriving salt industry, exporting up to 30,000 tonnes at day. Today, Sal is more known for its watersports than it seasoning. View more

As one of the flattest islands in Cape Verde, Sal is a haven for surfers, so expect a hip, happening crowd here. However, at 560 kms from the mainland, it is not one of the easier islands to get to, so the island – as indeed the whole archipelago – remains relatively undeveloped. The island is known for its laidback “morabeza” lifestyle. Colourful houses line cobbled streets, where the only interaction is when fishermen come by with their catch of the day – a trip to the local pier will have you witnessing this these skilled men coming in from a morning’s work. Unsurprisingly, seafood is delicious here, try the atum (tuna) or garoupa (grouper) for a lunchtime taste sensation. With Sal’s sandy beaches and gloriously clear seas espousing the island and its 350 days of sunshine a year, the island has in recent years become a year round holiday destination. Tourism has replaced the city’s former primary industry of salt exportation, and has made Sal one of the richest and more agreeable in Cape Verde.
