3NT PRE-CRUISE JAPAN THEN & NOW

The modern Japan of today has its roots in the mists of time. Travel from Tokyo to the former capital of Kyoto by Shinkanses bullet train. Visit shrines dedicated to the two principle religions of Japan; centers of instruction and learning during the Nara and Heian periods. Finally, pay homage to the modern-day quest for world peace that is exemplified in the monuments of Hiroshima.

Please note: guests should schedule flights into Tokyo's Narita Airport to begin this program.

Please check with your travel professional for details regarding visa requirements for Japan. It is the responsibility of the guest to obtain the appropriate visas before your cruise.

DAY 1 - ARRIVE TOKYO

Arriving at Tokyo's Narita Airport, you are met and transferred to the magnificent Imperial Hotel, where royalty and celebrities have been welcomed for over 100 years. If your flight arrives significantly earlier than 1:00pm, you might consider adding an additional night to your program to insure that you can check in immediately upon arrival.

The balance of the day, including dinner this evening, is at your leisure.

Overnight at the Imperial Hotel - Tokyo

DAY 2 - TOKYO / KYOTO

An early check-out starts you on your way to JR Tokyo Station for the 1st class experience on the bullet train heading for Kyoto, approximately a 3 hour trip. Once luggage is collected, the Silversea representative leads you to your transportation. Enjoy a western-menu lunch in Kyoto and then continue on to Nara.

The afternoon serves as an introduction to the two main religions of Japan. The Kasuga Taisha Shrine is considered by many to be one of the best Shinto shrines in Japan. Originally the royal shrine of the powerful Fujiwara family, the shrine was founded in 768 and, according to Shinto concepts of purity, was torn down and rebuilt every 20 years in its original form until 1863.

From here, continue on to the magnificent Todai-ji Temple, the largest single wooden structure in the world. It contains the largest bronze Buddha in the world. Today it is the Head Temple of the Kegon Sect of Buddhism, serving as a place of prayer for peace and affluence on earth, as well as a center of Buddhist doctrinal research. Legend has it that it took 2,180,000 workers to build it. The Buddha was completed in 751, having consumed most of Japan's bronze production for several years and leaving the country nearly bankrupt.

At the end of your visit, return to Kyoto, and check-in to your hotel. Dinner tonight is served at a local Japanese-style restaurant.

Overnight at the Kyoto Hotel Okura - Kyoto

DAY 3 - KYOTO / HIROSHIMA

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel this morning. Today includes a full day of sightseeing including a visit to Nijo Castle to examine the sumptuous paintings and carvings. Continue on to Kinkakuji Temple, also known as the Golden Pavilion, the temple was built by Shogun Shikaga Yoshimitsu as a villa in the Muromachi Period in 1397 and later converted as a temple. Lunch is served at a local (western menu) restaurant.

Depart Kyoto via JR Super Express for Hiroshima. From the train station there, proceed directly to the Peace Memorial Park and Atomic Bomb Dome. The East Wing of the Peace Memorial exhibits photographs, panels, videos and panorama models showing the actual history of Hiroshima in the days leading up to the bombing. The West Wing is dedicated to the aftermath and the ongoing goal of the city for peace and disarmament.

The Atomic Bomb Dome is a symbol of peace recognized the world over. The building, designed by a Czech architect in 1915, had been used as the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall. This European modern-style architecture was very popular with the local citizens of the time.

The building was located approximately 160 meters (175 yards) from the actual bomb site. It was not destroyed completely because the blast of the atomic bomb, which was vaporized in the air, prevented it from totally collapsing. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

At the end of your visit, continue on to check-in at your hotel. Dinner this evening is Japanese-style Teppan-yaki, at the hotel's restaurant.

3NT PRE-CRUISE: LAKE AKAN & THE CRANES OF KUSHIRO

Immerse yourself in the great natural sites of Hokkaido. Trek in Kushiro Marshland National Park. Two thousand spectacular varieties of animals and plants thrive here in Japan's largest marshland, which supports the only population of endangered Japanese cranes in Japan. Designated as a Special Natural Living Treasure, the endangered, red-crested cranes known as "Tancho-zuru" roam freely in a beautiful Reserve dedicated to their preservation.

Please note: guests should schedule flights into Tokyo's Narita Airport to begin this program.

Please check with your travel professional for details regarding visa requirements for Japan. It is the responsibility of the guest to obtain the appropriate visas before your cruise.

DAY 2 - TOKYO / LAKE AKAN

An early check-out starts you on your way to Haneda airport for the flight to Kushiro where your Hokkaido tour starts.

Once in Kushiro, transfer to the Kushiro Marshland, the largest marshland in the country. Embrace the spectacular natural beauty of the Marshland during an approximate 1 hour walking tour on the Onnenai Boardwalk. This wooden walkway stretches through the swamp. The Marshland is also home to about 600 plant species, and offers habitats for the Japanese crane and other migratory birds. During your walking tour led by a local nature guide, see flowers from the Ice Age found only in eastern Hokkaido, a variety of alpine plants and northern animals, and the distinctive seasonal changes of the region.

As part of your walking tour, stop for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing on to visit the Japanese Crane Reserve. Nearly extinct during the Meiji Era due to over-hunting and environmental changes, the species rebounded when approximately 10 surviving cranes were discovered in the Kushiro-Marshland area about 70 years ago. Farmers fed them in the winter months when food was scarce, and the numbers of Japanese cranes have proliferated ever since. This Crane Reserve is also a shelter for injured Japanese Crane.

Leaving the Reserve, drive along Lake Akan toward your hotel (appox. 90 minute.) As the panoramic views of Lake Akan and Mt.Oakandake unfold right in front of your eyes, relax as you take a moment to gaze at the lush natural surroundings.

The Ainu people have revered this lake as the 'Lake of the Gods' since ancient times. Although a visit to the lakeshore is not permitted, splendid views are available from the observatories.

Continue to Iouzan, an active volcano on Mount Iou, or 'Sulphur Mountain'. Upon arrival, you can stroll around the steaming and smoking area, where yellow, sulphurous vents can be viewed from up close. A few walking trails here are ideal for a pleasant stroll around the mountain. Eggs, cooked by the natural heat of the volcano, are usually on sale near the vents. A short drive takes you to the local restaurant where a Japanese style lunch is waiting for you.

After lunch, transfer to Memambetsu Airport and take a flight to Sapporo where you will spend the last night before getting onboard ship. The remainder of the evening, including dinner, is on your own this evening. Explore Izakaya, Japanese local restaurants and meet and drink with the locals.

At the top, you will enjoy a panoramic view of Sapporo city and truly realize how high the slopes stand.

During the Meiji and Taisho eras (1868-1926), herring fisheries prospered, making many successful. The villa was the home of an Otaru herring fishery boss and was constructed in 1922 over the course of six years. You will see the beauty with craftsman's minute technique in each part of Mansion.

Two thousand spectacular varieties of animals and plants thrive here in Japan's largest marshland, which supports the only population of endangered Japanese cranes in Japan. Please check with your travel professional for details regarding visa requirements for Japan. It is the responsibility of the guest to obtain the appropriate visas before your cruise.

DAY 1 - DISEMBARK OTARU / SAPPORO

Following disembarkation, meet the local Silversea representative and begin your visit to Hokkaido. One of your first stops is the former Aoyama Villa or the Nishin Goten (Herring Mansion). During the Meiji and Taisho eras, herring fisheries prospered, making many owners quite successful. The villa was the home of an Otaru herring fishery boss and was constructed in 1922 over the course of six years. The miyadaiku (carpenters specializing in shrines and temples) worked painstakingly to create this lavish two-story wooden structure. Step inside and admire the finely lacquered floors, the gleaming whitewashed walls, and zelkova (an Asian tree) corridors. Note the intricacy of the sliding doors, which are adorned with the works of the premiere painters and calligraphers of the day.

Then drive to the Otaru canal and shopping area, a historic mile-long canal that provides both a nostalgic look at the Otaru of yesteryear as well as a unique shopping and dining experience. Once the capital of Hokkaido in Japan's Meiji Period, Otaru was known as the "Sakhalin of Japan" for its busy maritime trade with Russia. The canal was created by a sea reclamation project started in 1914, and the store warehouses that you see were built during this period. They have been beautifully preserved and are an iconic and much photographed landmark in the city. Along the canal, you will find a gaslight-lined promenade brimming with shops and boutiques.

Continue on to Sapporo and enjoy lunch following your check-in at the hotel. Early in the Meiji Period, on the advice of western travelers and traders, the city's streetscape was developed in the traditional grid pattern so common in large western cities. Many visitors recall that the 1972 Winter Olympics were held here. Visit the site of the ski jump competition and look out over the city.

The balance of the day, as well as dinner this evening, is on your own account.

Overnight at JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo - Sapporo

DAY 2 - SAPPORO / LAKE AKAN

After breakfast and check out, transfer to Sapporo's Shin-Chitose Airport for the flight to Memambetsu. Once there, start the scenic drive to Iozan, an active volcano on Mount Iou, or 'Sulphur Mountain'. Upon arrival, you can stroll around the steaming area, where yellow, sulphurous vents can be viewed from up close. A few walking trails here are ideal for a pleasant stroll around the mountain. Eggs, cooked by the natural heat of the volcano, are usually on sale near the vents. A short drive takes you to a local restaurant where a Japanese style lunch is waiting for you.

After lunch, transfer to Lake Mashu. The world's most transparent lake, Mashu features beautiful, emerald-coloured surfaces that change from moment-to-moment and are always covered by mist. The Ainu people have revered this lake as the 'Lake of the Gods' since ancient times. Although a visit to the lakeshore is not permitted, splendid views are available from the observatories.

Continue along Lake Akan to the Tsuruga Wings Hotel, as panoramic views of Lake Akan and Mt.Oakandake unfold before your eyes. Relax as you take a moment to gaze at the lush natural surroundings. Enjoy a buffet style dinner and Japanese Onsen (hot springs) at the hotel to soak away your fatigue.

DAY 3 - LAKE AKAN / TOKYO

An early check-out starts you on your way to the Kushiro Marshland, the largest marshland in Japan. During your walking tour led by a local nature guide, see flowers from the Ice Age found only in eastern Hokkaido, a variety of alpine plants and northern animals, and the distinctive seasonal changes of the region.

Following your walking tour, stop for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing on to visit the Japanese Crane Reserve.

Leaving the Reserve, a short drive takes you to Kushiro Airport for the flight to Tokyo. Once there, transfer to the magnificent Imperial Hotel, where royalty and celebrities have been welcomed for over 100 years. Relax for a bit before leaving the hotel for dinner at a local restaurant.
