Silversea Luxury Cruises A Hososhima

With stunning countryside and quite indescribable vistas, Hososhima welcomes its visitors with jagged coastlines and traditional charms. Gloss over the industrial port – Hososhima having only recently been opened as a tourist spot – and you will find some of the region’s most spectacular landscapes. Undoubtedly the most striking of these can be found at the Takachicho Gorge. A gentle drive with excellent views of active volcano Mount Aso takes you to the sheer cliffs, aquamarine waters and the thundering 56-foot waterfall of the gorge proper. View more

For a fully immersive experience, do not hesitate to descend the (easy to negotiate) steps to the bottom and hire a rowing boat, before indulging in a bowl of udon noodles from one of the local restaurants.

Further afield yet still less than five kilometres away from Hososhima lies Hyuga, a small town that boasts some of the most beautiful Mimitsu townhouses outside of Kyoto and Osaka. Described by one enthusiastic visitor as being like “time travel – we feel like we have stepped back at least two centuries”, this exemplary area in the city has been designated a national important preservation district for groups of traditional buildings, and much of the 19th-century atmosphere, including traditional buildings, earthen walls, and stone pavements, remains.

Cape Hyuga & Mimitsu Town Walking

Discover the spectacular natural beauty, architecture and history of Mimitsu Town and Cape Hyuga on-foot during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Hoshoshima, Mimitsu Town, Mimi River

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 30-minute drive to the quaint town of Mimitsu, situated at the mouth of the Mimi River. During the Edo period (1603-1868), Mimitsu was a thriving port that served as a key hub for trade. Merchants and shipping agents built their lavish homes practically on top of one another. When trade transportation switched to railways in the early-20th century, Mimitsu's heyday was over and the town fell on hard times. Its renaissance began in 2007, when Mimitsu was designated one of the 100 most beautiful historic landscapes in Japan, ensuring its preservation for generations to come.

Oceanfront Stroll, Classic Japanese Architecture, Hyuga City History & Folk Museum

During your guided tour, garner a unique insight into the glory of this once-prosperous commercial port. As you stroll along the three main thoroughfares that run parallel to the ocean, marvel at signature Japanese architecture from centuries ago. Finely-latticed windows and earthen walls complement the quaint streets paved in stone. A stop is made at the Hyuga City History & Folk Museum, once the home of a shipping agent. Here, learn more about the history of the town and get a sense of what life was like in the 18th century.

Cape Hyuga, Nippo-Kaigan Quasi National Park, Waves Crashing Against the Cliffs

Your final stop is at Cape Hyuga, located in the Miyazaki Prefecture and part of Nippo-Kaigan Quasi National Park. Here, the rugged shoreline here spans almost 700 feet (about 213 metres), with cliffs that are more than 200 feet (61 metres) in height. During a guided stroll along Cape Hyuga, marvel at the exquisite panoramic views of the waves crashing against the cliffs. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.93 miles (about 1.5 kilometres), at times over uneven surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and 15 steps at Mimitsu Town. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Guests must remove their shoes before entering the Hyuga City History & Folk Museum; this venue is small, so please mind your head and steps. The tour sequence may vary. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Scenery of Hyuga

Indulge your senses with the scenic splendour of Hyuga and its surrounds during this panoramic, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Hososhima, Omi Shrine

Depart the pier for the short drive to the Omi Shrine, the shrine of Amaterasu Omikami, the sun goddess whose symbol of the rising sun is depicted on the Japanese flag. This important shrine is nestled in a natural cove and features striking, cross-beam architecture and picturesque views. According to local legend, the god Niniginomikoto found this spot to be so beautiful that he created a shrine here to pray for peace. The current building was updated in 1936, though the original dates back to ancient times. A guided stroll through this quiet, peaceful structure emotes a sense of the time-honoured religion of the indigenous Japanese people.

Komenoyama Observatory, Nippo-Kaigan Coastline, Cruss Sea

Next, re-board your coach and head to the Komenoyama Observatory. Upon arrival, take in spectacular panoramic views and photo opportunities of the splendid Nippo-Kaigan coastline from more than 1,100 feet (about 335 metres) above sea level. Continue on to the Cruss Sea, a peculiar geological formation where the ocean has eroded the rocks in the near-perfect form of a cross. Its name derives from the Japanese word for 'ocean' and Portuguese word for 'cross', due to the influence of Portuguese traders who arrived in Japan in the 16th century. This location is thought to carry a special spiritual energy for the Japanese, and it is said that if you visit the Cruss Sea, your dreams will come true. The origins of this legend came from the view of the sea resembling the Japanese character for the verb 'to realize'.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.87 miles (about 1.4 kilometres), at times over uneven surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach, ten steps at the Cruss Sea, 20 steps at the Komenoyama Observatory and 50 steps at the Omi Shrine. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair.
