Silversea Luxury Cruises A HALIFAX (Nova Scotia)

HALIFAX (Nova Scotia)

Surrounded by natural treasures and glorious seascapes, Halifax is an attractive and vibrant hub with noteworthy historic and modern architecture, great dining and shopping, and a lively nightlife and festival scene. The old city manages to feel both hip and historic. Previous generations had the foresight to preserve the cultural and architectural integrity of the city, yet students from five local universities keep it lively and current. View more

It's a perfect starting point to any tour of the Atlantic provinces, but even if you don't venture beyond its boundaries, you will get a real taste of the region. It was Halifax’s natural harbor—the second largest in the world after Sydney, Australia’s—that first drew the British here in 1749, and today most major sites are conveniently located either along it or on the Citadel-crowned hill overlooking it. That’s good news for visitors because this city actually covers quite a bit of ground.Since amalgamating with Dartmouth (directly across the harbor) and several suburbs in 1996, Halifax has been absorbed into the Halifax Regional Municipality, and the HRM, as it is known, has around 415,000 residents. That may not sound like a lot by U.S. standards, but it makes Nova Scotia’s capital the most significant Canadian urban center east of Montréal.There's easy access to the water, and despite being the focal point of a busy commercial port, Halifax Harbour doubles as a playground, with one of the world's longest downtown boardwalks. It's a place where container ships, commuter ferries, cruise ships, and tour boats compete for space, and where workaday tugs and fishing vessels tie up beside glitzy yachts. Like Halifax as a whole, the harbor represents a blend of the traditional and the contemporary.

Coastal Cycling Adventure

Enjoy a guided cycling tour along the scenic Salt Marsh Trail, one of the most popular and well-maintained multi-use trails on the Eastern Shore.

Now part of the Trans-Canada Trail, the Salt Marsh Trail was once a rail track operated by the Canadian National Railway and was responsible for bringing goods, building material and people to the tiny communities that dot the shoreline. Located only a 30-minute drive from the Port of Halifax, this area is coastal nature at its finest; where ocean water meets fresh water, offering expansive views of water, beaches, and the tiny villages nestled within the topography. It is also a home to many species of wildlife including osprey, bald eagles, terns, sand pipers, blue herons, barn swallows and Willetts. You may be lucky and spot the occasional white-tailed deer.

From the trailhead, your guides will lead you to the over-water portion of the trail in just minutes and avoid any paved roads. The bike trail is made of well packed crusher-dust and void of any hills or cars. As you travel along the route, make occasional stops to view tidal currents and mention history, flora and fauna of the area. The route visits forests and other open water areas until your destination of Lawrencetown Beach, known for some of the best surfing in North America. Afterwards, return the same back to the trailhead with the same route.

At the conclusion of your biking adventure, transfer back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of bicycling for approximately two hours and a moderate amount of walking, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. This tour is recommended for guests who are in good physical condition, experienced bicycle riders, have recently ridden or are confident on a bicycle, and comfortable with handbrakes and riding downhill. This tour is not recommended for pregnant guests, guests with neck and/or back problems, guests with heart and/or respiratory conditions, guests with limited mobility, and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking or sport shoes, and bring sun protection, raingear, and a sweater or light jacket from the ship. Safety helmets are provided, and must be worn the entire time whilst bicycling. A signed waiver is required to participate on this tour. Although frequently encountered on this type of tour, animal sightings are not guaranteed. The tour sequence and timings may vary. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions. Space on this tour is extremely limited; we suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.
