Silversea Luxury Cruises A COQUIMBO

COQUIMBO

The name Coquimbo is derived from a native Diaguita word meaning 'place of calm waters'. In fact, Charles Darwin had noted that the town was 'remarkable for nothing but its extreme quietness'. Since then, Coquimbo has developed into a bustling port and the region's major commercial and industrial centre from which minerals, fish products and fruits are exported. Used during the colonial period as a port for La Serena, Coquimbo attracted attention from English pirates, including Sir Francis Drake, who visited in 1578. View more

Visitors enjoy strolling around the town, admiring some of the elaborate woodwork handcrafted on buildings by early British and American settlers. These wooden buildings are among Chile's most interesting historical structures. Out of town, the area offers some fine beaches in a desert-like setting. Coquimbo serves as a gateway to the popular resort town of La Serena and trips farther into the Elqui Valley, known as the production centre for Chile's national drink, pisco sour. The valley is also home to several international observatories that take advantage of the region's exceptional atmospheric conditions.

A Day of Play at La Serena Golf Club

Escape for a day of play at La Serena Golf Club. Considered to be one of the best courses in Chile, this 7,320 yard (6693.41 metres), par 72-course is beautifully laid-out between the dunes and the ocean.

Depart the pier in an air-conditioned mini-bus for the approximate 45-minute transfer to the golf club. Upon arrival, you notice the upscale accommodations, condominiums and sports facilities that are a part of this exclusive community.

Check in at the pro shop and secure any rental equipment you may require for play before heading out to the first tee. Meet your caddie and start your round of play on this uniquely designed course. The natural vegetation, three lagoons and the weather all combine to create this special landscape and provides a memorable golf experience.

At the end of your play enjoy a drink and a snack before you re-join the transfer for the return drive to the pier and your awaiting ship.

A Visit to Tabali Winery

Discover the Limarí Valley, which takes its name from the river which runs through it. This destination is a rich archaeological area with highlights including a petrified forest at the Pichasca National Monument, and the Enchanted Valley, located 19 kilometers southwest of Ovalle. This full-day excursion includes a visit to both valleys, as well as other highlights of this hidden corner of South America.

Drive through Coquimbo before heading inland toward Ovalle. Heading inland from the coast, the scenery takes on a noticeably greener hue as lush, rolling valleys replace the arid coastal landscape. Reach the Enchanted Valley, where excavations have shown that groups of hunter-gatherers have inhabited this area for almost 4,000 years. The place now stands as an open-air museum and a site of great scientific and cultural interest. The main attractions here are the many examples of pictographs and petroglyphs across the hillsides, providing a reminder of times when the Indians of the El Molle Culture inhabited this valley of gargantuan boulders and murmuring streams.

This region is also of important agricultural significance as together with the Elqui and Choapa valleys it represents rich fertile transversal valleys running across the coastal mountains of semi-arid desert scrubland. A rich tapestry of crops covers the valley, especially the green carpets of grapes grown in impressive vineyards both for the early table grapes for export and for wine.

Continue to Tabalí Winery, located in the northernmost wine-growing region of Chile. This magical terroir was discovered by entrepreneur Guillermo Luksic Craig, a pioneer in the planting of vineyards in this area. Tabalí means "passage of waters" in the dialect of the Diaguita culture, whose ancestors discovered the area. In the winery's first year, 2003, Tabalí obtained 24 medals. This vineyard is well-known for its unique coup ages and blends of wine stocks such as Viognier, Sangiovese and Carmenere. Upon arrival, receive a guided tour of the winery, followed by an excellent tasting of its most representative wines. Return to the pier.

Explore the lovely Elqui Valley, an area of Diaguita culture, with its sleepy villages, charming adobe constructions, and beautiful rolling hills. It is also an important agricultural area awash with papaya (pawpaw) groves, olive groves, pear orchards and vineyards. This is also the area where muscatel grapes are turned into Pisco, Chile's national spirit.

Unique in the world, this transversal valley features an area of rich agricultural diversity in the midst of a semi-arid desert. The valley is especially famous for having the clearest atmosphere in the world and is especially suited for astronomical viewing.

Departing the pier, drive 45 minutes along a coastal road towards the small, picturesque town of Vicuña, which is noted for being the birthplace of Gabriela Mistral, the Nobel Prize winner for literature. Vicuña is also known for its famous Pisco producers and its tranquil, sleepy setting. Make a stop in the main square, to see the Bauer Tower (the old city hall) and other historic buildings. Enjoy the view of the square's grande, old trees, in stark contrast with the aridity of the surrounding hills. See the Parish Church with a pretty wooden tower erected in 1910.

In the Main Square is the Bauer Tower, a strange wood-lined metal structure made to resemble a medieval tower with battlements. It was prefabricated in 1905 at Ulm, Germany, by order of Mayor Adolfo Bauer. Also visit the Vicuña handicraft market for some free time for shopping before boarding you bus to drive to Pisco Capel, one of the bigger pisco producers in Chile for a tour and tasting. Drive back straight to Coquimbo, a 90-minute return trip.

La Serena & Elqui Valley

Discover the splendid beauty and history of northern Chile during this memorable half-day sightseeing tour of Vicuña and the Elqui Valley.

The Coquimbo region forms the narrowest part, or 'waist' of Chile, and is hence one of the country's more mountainous regions, as the Andes range runs closer to the sea than elsewhere.

Nobel Prize-winning poet Gabriela Mistral was a native of Vicuña, in the Elqui Valley, a Pisco producing area, famous for its beauty and clear skies.

Elqui Valley and Pisco Distillery

Head directly from the pier to Elqui Valley driving by the coastal road, where you will see the traditional light-house monument of the city of La Serena, and also some of its main avenues. Your first stop will be at the Pisco distillery plant, where besides touring the installation, you have the opportunity to taste this unique liquor. After this experience, the tour will proceed towards Vicuña town.

Enjoy a revitalizing typical Chilean snack at a local restaurant before heading back to the pier.

La Serena & Third Millennium Cross

Explore the beauty, history and culture of Coquimbo and La Serena during this picturesque sightseeing excursion. On the way into the city from the South you'll see the Cruz del Tercer Milenio (The Cross of the Third Millennium), one of Coquimbo's most impressive religious monuments. Though it is often linked to the nearby city of Coquimbo, La Serena's architecture sets it apart. The city's picturesque; colonial-style old quarter makes for an interesting visit, with buildings that offer plenty of terrific photo opportunities.

Coquimbo City

Leave the port of Coquimbo passing through the downtown area of Coquimbo to the "Third Millennium Cross", built for the birth of the new millennium. Enjoy the panoramic, 360 degree of Coquimbo city.

La Serena

Continuing north towards the city of La Serena along the coastal route, the attractiveness of the ocean front has been developed with modern hotels, apartments, pubs, clubs and restaurants bordering the extensive beaches. The symbol of La Serena is the lighthouse, where a photo stop is made before proceeding along the Avenue Francisco de Aguirre, which is partly lined with replicas of classical statues. La Serena is the second oldest city in Chile after Santiago and maintains a neo-colonial Spanish style of architecture.

A stop at the picturesque craft market of "La Recova" allows time for shopping, in a colorful place where there are a variety of gifts and souvenirs made from local products especially jewelry made from the local semi-precious stone, lapis lazuli.

Finally, a panoramic view from the top of the hill of La Serena University affords a splendid opportunity for a photo stop.

Your return drive to the pier is approximately 30-minutes along the Pan American Highway.
