DAY ONE - Thursday, February 6, 2020 - Lima/Cusco
Transfer to Lima Airport, and a scheduled flight to Cusco
After disembarking the ship in Callao, meet your guide and transfer to the Lima Airport. Upon arrival, check-in for your scheduled, approximately 1.5-hour flight to Cusco, taking you from sea level to the heights of the Andes.
Guided tour of the splendid, Baroque-style Cusco Cathedral and lunch at a local restaurant
Upon arrival at the Cusco Airport in Calama, meet your guide and transfer to the splendid, Baroque-style Cusco Cathedral, built in the mid-1500s on the foundations of an Incan palace. Many of the stones used in its construction were looted from the nearby Sacsayhuaman Fortress. Following your visit, proceed for lunch at a local restaurant.
Visit the sacred site of Koricancha, with its lovely Dominican Convent of Santo Domingo
After lunch at a local restaurant, continue on to the sacred site of Koricancha. Here, admire the lovely Dominican Convent of Santo Domingo, which was built on the foundations of the Temple of the Sun, the most exquisite temple in the Incan Empire. The curved, mortar-less masonry wall at the west-end of the church is considered to be one of the greatest existing examples of Incan stonework.
Guided tour of the ancient Incan citadel, Sacsayhuaman
Next, re-board your coach and drive up to the Sacsayhuaman Fortress. Strategically located on a hill overlooking Cusco, Sacsayhuaman was constructed without mortar, like many other Incan structures. Yet the enormous stones of the remaining walls, some weighing approximately 200 tons (about 181 metric tons), fit so tightly that not even a thin knife blade can slide between them. This craftsmanship is a stunning example of the Incan's sophisticated construction techniques and architectural skills.
Hotel transfer, check-in and some free time
Following your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 70-minute transfer back to the hotel for check-in, and some free time to freshen-up before dinner.
Dinner is at the hotel.
Overnight accommodations in a Deluxe Room at the Monasterio Hotel - Cusco
DAY TWO - Friday, February 7, 2020 - Cusco/Machu Picchu/Cusco
Breakfast, a panoramic ride aboard a deluxe train for lunch and panoramic ride to Macchu Picchu
After breakfast at the hotel, meet your guide and depart for the short walk to the Rio Sagrado Train Station. Transfer to Macchu Picchu, and a guided walking tour of this incredible ancient city
Upon arrival at the Aguas Calientes Train Station, transfer to Macchu Picchu, one of South America's most spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The highlight of your day is experiencing the timeless wonder and grandeur of this 'Lost City of the Incas'. Your guided walking tour explores the terraces and aqueducts leading to the Temple of the Three Windows. Here, see the sun's rays pass through the temple to light the Sacred Plaza and visit the curious stone block believed to be a solar clock.
Explore remarkably preserved palaces, baths, temples, storage rooms, and some 150 houses
Whilst exploring this Incan retreat perched between Huayna Picchu (Young Peak) and Machu Picchu (Old Peak), it is easy to be moved by the wonder of this magnificent ancient wonder. Perched approximately 2,000 feet (about 610 metres) above the rumbling Urubamba River, it contains misty palaces, baths, temples, storage rooms, and some 150 houses, all in a remarkable state of preservation. Carved from the granite of the mountain top, many of the building blocks weigh 50 tons (about 45 metric tons) or more, yet are so precisely sculpted and fitted that the mortar-less joints won't permit the insertion of even a thin knife-blade.
Transfer back to the train station and a return-ride to Rio Sagrado, with dinner served on board
Following your tour of Macchu Picchu, transfer back to the Aguas Calientes Train Station and re-board the Hiram Bingham train for the return-ride to Rio Sagrado, with dinner served on board. Upon arrival at the Rio Sagrado Train Station, transfer back to the hotel.
