Excursions depuis Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard

'Jaws' Experience

'Jaws' is a 1975 American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Peter Benchley's 1974 novel.

Considered one of the greatest movies ever made, Jaws was the prototypical summer blockbuster, with its release regarded as a watershed moment in motion picture history, and it won several awards for its music and editing. It became the highest-grossing film of all time until the release of Star Wars in 1977.

What better way to experience Martha's Vineyard than to visit many of the films' locations. You will learn about many non-published stories about the filming, the actors, as well as being able to stop to take photos. The Jaws bridge itself is one of the top 5 attractions on the island.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, at times over uneven and cobblestone surfaces. Guests are advised to lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection and a light sweater or jacket and bottle of water from the ship.

African American History

The history of Oak Bluffs contrasts sharply with other towns on Martha's Vineyard in that it has also been home to a thriving African American community since the 1800s.

People of African descent first arrived at Martha's Vineyard in the 1600s as enslaved West Africans who worked on the farms of European settlers. In the latter part of the following century, African American vacationers were welcomed in Oak Bluffs, even as other communities on the island barred them from visiting. Today, the town is known for its distinctive and colorful gingerbread houses, its large marina, and its decades-old African American community.

Experience the rich African American history of Martha's Vineyard and visit the most important sites on the Heritage Trail. Meet your experiences tour guide (an African American Martha's Vineyard History Specialist) at the pier and start your day with a drive to specific historical locations on the Island, the formation of the NAACP on Martha's Vineyard, as well as the connection between the Vineyard's Grace Church and the one in Mississippi. At North Road, you hear about Rebecca Amos, her daughter Nancy, and great grandson William Martin. In Menemsha, learn about the Wampanoag's helping slaves escape. And in Edgartown learn more about Nancy and William Martin, and the Chappaquiddick Plantation. Your final stop will be at the Overton House (Villa Rosa) where you will find out about its connection to the Civil Rights movement.

Your tour will conclude back at the pier.

Best of the Island

Enjoy a drive through the down-Island towns. The towns on Martha's Vineyard offer surprising diversity, each with its own character and personality.

Oak Bluffs

With its gingerbread cottages and Ocean Front Park, Oak Bluffs is a Victorian-era summer resort. At the foot of Circuit Avenue, the main street, is the remarkable Flying Horses Carousel, the oldest operating carousel in the nation. You will drive past the Methodist Campground, which consists of gingerbread houses constructed to replace the Methodist meeting tents.

Edgartown & Free Time

One of New England's most elegant communities, Edgartown's Main Street is a picture book setting with its harbor and waterfront. See the stately white Greek Revival houses built by the whaling captains. Here, enjoy 1-hour free time. Stroll along North Water Street and see a row of captains' houses; study the fanlights and widow's walks. The huge pagoda tree that dominates South Water Street was brought from China as a seedling in the early days of the 19th century. Other sites include the Vincent House, the oldest known house on the island; the Federated Church, built in 1812, with old box pews; and the Old Whaling Church, that was built in 1843 at the height of the whaling industry.

West Tisbury

All the characteristics of a typical New England village - a white church, general store, post office, old mill, farms and ponds can be associated with West Tisbury.

Vineyard Haven

This is the island's picturesque center of commerce. Boat building is centered here and most visitors arrive here from the mainland.

After your visit of Vineyard Haven, there will be a short drive back to Oak Bluffs.
