Northeast of Petropavlovsk, on the eastern side of the Kamchatka Peninsula, is the mighty Zhupanova River. Strewn with ever changing shallows and sand bars, the 160-kilometer (100-mile) long river is used year-round by rainbow trout. Anglers are attracted by the pink, cherry, coho, dog and red salmon, as well as Arctic and white-spotted char.
