Highlights of Turku

Discover the highlights of Finland's oldest city and first capital during this picturesque, half-day sightseeing excursion to Turku.

Turku City Tour

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately one-hour orientation drive through Turku. Along the way, pass by a host of historic buildings, including the Orthodox Church, stately Turku Cathedral, Swedish Theatre, an observatory building on Vartiovuori Hill, and more. Your first stop is at Turku Castle, a unique, grey stone castle which has stood guard at the mouth of the River Aura since the 1280's.

Turku Castle

Located in the harbour area, the Turku Castle is part of Finland's national heritage and has witnessed many great events, including weddings, funerals and wars. The castle's heyday was in the 16th century, and the new Renaissance-spirited storey was built during that time. One of the most popular sights of the castle is the prison cell where Duke Johan held his brother, the ousted King Erik XIV, prisoner in the 1570s. Medieval woodcarvings are on display in the castle's chapel. Following your guided walking tour of the castle, re-board your coach and drive to the Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum.

Luostarinmäki Handicrafts Museum

Upon arrival, take a guided walking tour of this unique museum. When the Great Fire of Turku destroyed a majority of the town in 1827, Luostarinmäki was spared as it was then a rather remote part of town. The area remains in its original condition, and provides a genuine setting for the Handicrafts Museum, which comprises about 30 workshops from the pre-industrial era. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the city centre. Upon arrival, you can return directly to the pier, or be dropped off (time-permitting) for independent exploration and shopping before returning to the ship on your own.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking, at times over uneven and cobblestone surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and several steps at Turku Castle. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing in layers with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection and a waterproof jacket or coat from the ship. The tour sequence may vary.

Here, the outdoor plant collection comprises several thousand different species and varieties such as edible plants, roses, meadow flowers, rock plants, water lilies, and exotic trees and shrubs.

Following your walking tour, proceed for a relaxing stop at an old wooden villa for coffee or tea served with homemade baked goods. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the short drive back to the pier.
