Silversea Luxury Cruises A Tauranga

Tauranga

The population center of the Bay of Plenty, Tauranga is one of New Zealand's fastest-growing cities. Along with its neighbor, Whakatane, this seaside city claims to be one of the country's sunniest towns. Unlike most local towns, Tauranga doesn't grind to a halt in the off-season, because it has one of the busiest ports in the country, and the excellent waves at the neighboring beach resort of Mount Maunganui—just across Tauranga's harbor bridge—always draw surfers and holiday folk.

Tauranga Panoramic Drive

Discover the historic sites of scenic Tauranga during this delightful half-day orientation tour of the city. Tauranga is the most populous city in the Bay of Plenty region of the North Island of New Zealand. It was settled by Māori late in the 13th century and by Europeans in the early 19th century and was constituted as a city in 1963.

Tauranga

Depart the Port of Mount Maunganui for the drive across Tauranga Harbour to Tauranga, the principal city of the Bay of Plenty. The city's founders, a group of 19th-century missionaries, left a legacy of well-planned parks and gardens for future residents and visitors to enjoy.

Elms Mission House

Next, pass by the Monmouth Redoubt en route to the Elms Mission House, built in 1847 by Archdeacon Brown. Upon arrival, the guide leads you through the historic home and lovely garden surrounding the Georgian-styled home.

Te Puke

From here continue to Te Puke, kiwifruit capital of the world, with a guided visit to a Kiwi fruit orchard. This will give you a chance to see and learn about the unique kiwifruit where the workings of the orchard will be fully explained. At the end of the tour you will be able to taste and sample the fruit.

Following your tour of the kiwi orchard, re-board your coach for the return drive across the Matapihi Road to Mount Maunganui and your ship.

Please note: This tour involves a panoramic drive with a moderate amount of walking at the mission house and orchard to explore fully. It is suitable for guests with limited mobility; however, wheelchairs cannot be accommodated. Order of sights seen may vary in sequence.

Volcanic White Island by Helicopter

Enjoy a breath-taking aerial journey to New Zealand's only active marine volcano on this tour. Land on White Island, don your safety gear and proceed on a guided walk with your pilot.

Pacific Ocean

From the ship, a short transfer brings you to the Tauranga Airport. Following a safety briefing, board your helicopter and depart on your 30 minute flight over the sparse, open expanses of the Pacific Ocean to White Island.

White Island

Set down on the floor of the crater and disembark for an hour-long exploratory walk with your guide around the volcano. Enjoy the visual spectacle, surrounded by the constant noise of active fumaroles scattered throughout the confines of the crater. Then venture across the crater floor, crossing numerous small streams to stand on the edge of the crater-lake.

Finally, re-board your helicopter for the scenic 30 minute flight back to Tauranga and your ship.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of activity; however, it is not suitable for guests who utilise a wheelchair or those with limited mobility. Walking on White Island is on uneven and over undulating crater surfaces and guests may experience unpleasant volcanic steam venting from the crater. Comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes and a warm jacket are recommended. Breathing masks and helmet are provided. Helicopter type is dependent on aircraft availability. Seating is at the discretion of the pilot and is based on weight and balance requirements. All guests are asked to submit their weights in advance to the Shore Concierge on board. Due to weight and balance limitations, as well as guest safety and comfort, the maximum weight per passenger must not exceed 286 pounds (136 kilograms/20.43 stones). All seats are utilised and seating adjacent to a window cannot be guaranteed. Price is per person. Flight is subject to weather conditions and may be cancelled or altered at pilot's discretion. Space is very limited; there is a minimum/maximum amount to operate this tour, we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.
