Silversea Luxury Cruises A Port Elizabeth

Port Elizabeth
Port Elizabeth
Port Elizabeth

Port Elizabeth, or PE, may not have the range of attractions found in Cape Town or on the Garden Route, but it's a pleasant town that's worthy of a few days' exploration. There are some beautiful beaches (although you'll need to visit them early in the day in summer as the wind tends to pick up by midday) and some wonderfully preserved historic buildings in the older part of the city, called Central. View more

A large part of the town's charm lies in its small size and quiet environment, but PE is not a total sleepy hollow. If you feel the need for a bit of nightlife, head to the Boardwalk complex near the beach, for its restaurants, cafés, theater, and casino, or to Parliament Street in Central, which has recently been pedestrianized and has a vibrant restaurant and nightlife scene. PE is a good base for exploring some other fantastic destinations, both wild and cultural, including Addo Elephant National Park. If you are traveling to any of the luxury game reserves east of Port Elizabeth (such as those in Addo, Shamwari or Kwandwe), it may be a good idea to spend the night before in PE, as many places advise you to check in before lunch and it could be a scramble to get there if you're driving or flying in that morning. Port Elizabeth's suburbs can be a little confusing. Humewood and Summerstrand are PE's two main coastal suburbs, with Humewood closer to the city center. The Humewood Golf Course, one of South Africa's best, is in Summerstrand, not Humewood, however (just to keep you on your toes).

Addo Elephant Park by 4x4

Depart from the quayside and cross the Swartkops River. Turn inland to the flat valley of the Sunday's River and arrive at the Addo Elephant Park, about 45 miles (75 km) from the port.

The Addo Elephant Park, which consists of over 126,000 acres (51,000 hectares) of bush country, is the home to some 450 elephants that have bred from the few that remained in the area after the herd was almost wiped out by the hired game hunter Major P.J. Pretorius in the 1920s. Although it belongs to the same species as the African Elephant, the reddish Addo Elephant is smaller with more rounded ears, while the females generally have no tusks.

On your 2-hour game drive through the park by open vehicle**, you will likely encounter this rare animal, as well as a variety of other game, which was recently introduced to the reserve. This includes lion, hyena, cheetah, zebra, eland, kudu and red hartebeest. Also quite notable is the unique flightless dung beetle, which is found almost exclusively in Addo.

After your game drive, return to the main reception area of the Addo Elephant Park where facilities and a curio shop are available for your perusal.

** Capacity for each safari vehicle varies depending on vehicle availability. Silversea cannot guarantee all guests travelling together will be in the same safari vehicle however we will do our utmost to accomodate. A refund will not be provided to those who choose not to participate in the tour if they are split.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking. Guest must be able to climb into 4X4 open vehicles. Comfortable clothing, binoculars and a sun hat are strongly recommended. For safety reasons, no children under the age of 6 years are allowed on the open vehicles. No food may be taken into the reserve in the open vehicles. Guests are not permitted to use cellular phones during the game drives. They are also not permitted to speak loudly or stand up on the game drive vehicles, as this will disturb the animals. The drive maybe very bumpy with dips in the road; please be sure to hang on to your possessions. Smoking is not permitted during the game-drives. The spotting of wildlife cannot be guaranteed.

Township Tour - South Africa's Past & Present

Gain an insight into the local African culture like none you have ever experienced before, and in doing so your participation will contribute to the economic uplifting so vital for the people of South Africa.

A small donation of pens, paper and other much-needed stationery, will be handed out at the school or day centre.

Port Elizabeth - the historic hot-bed of political and social resistance to Apartheid. This was the first city to elect a non-racial City Council, and this groundbreaking tour will cover both the historical heart of the city and the vibrant black townships. Come face to face with the harsh reality of South Africa's past and the successes and challenges of the present.

Depart from the quayside and enjoy a brief orientation tour of Port Elizabeth, before proceeding to Missionvale, a very poor and undeveloped residential township. From here, continue via the Govan Mbeki Township to the middle class areas of Kwadwesi and Kwa Magxaki.

Proceed to the heart of the township via Veeplaas, passing the main trading area, Njoli Square, en-route. This will be followed by a refreshment and comfort stop at a local school or day centre, during which you are exposed to a variety of cultural activities and entertainment.

Thereafter, continue past the hairdressers at the Goniwe Hostel, on your way to the gallery of township artists in the squatter camp, Rhamaphosa Village. The different styles of work on display will be explained. This is an opportunity to purchase crafts directly from the artists.

From here, continue to the Emlotheni Memorial Park, recently built to commemorate the death of the first Umkhonto we Sizwe cadres, who were hung by the previous regime in the early sixties. Before leaving the township, visit the historic Red Location, striking because of its unique architecture and its strong connection to ANC (African National Congress) history.

Return to the quayside after gaining some insight into South Africa's past.

Please note: This tours involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 1706 feet (520 metres) and it is not suitable for guests who utilise a wheelchair; however, guests must be able to embark/disembark the coach via the bus steps and have the aid of an assistant or spouse. Guests are advised to wear flat, comfortable walking shoes, a hat & sun block. Only local currency (South African Rand) is accepted in the crafts building and there is no shipping service available. The facilities are cleaned prior to your arrival but are very basic. Please note that most of the sites visited on this tour are part of an African Township, which whilst having extreme poverty, is busy being uplifted by the government and the local community, making it a place of hope. One needs to be prepared for this aspect of the tour, as it is definitely a 'no frills' experience. The tour sequence may vary. The proceeds of this tour will be donated to the local school or day care centre by our local representatives.

Experience an authentic safari adventure during your stay at the exclusive Gorah Elephant Camp, a private concession within the malaria-free Addo Elephant National Park. The park is a sanctuary for a wide range of South Africa's wildlife, but notably for over 450 elephants which today roam the bush freely thanks to a finely tuned ecosystem. When the original elephant section was proclaimed in 1931, only eleven elephants were left. With an additional 280 Cape buffalo, black rhino, a range of antelope species and the flightless dung beetle, Addo Elephant Park is a perfect destination for adventurous outdoor and nature lovers.

Gorah's exclusive safari lodge provides comfort and luxury in solar-powered tents, and the opportunity to join game drives, or quietly observe a passing herd of elephants whilst having tea on the veranda. Dinner served by candle light in the dining room of the elegant Manor House adds further to create the ultimate safari experience.

DAY ONE - Port Elizabeth/Gorah Elephant Camp

Departing the ship in Port Elizabeth, begin the 2-hour drive into the countryside with a local guide, headed to Gorah Elephant Camp. The first concession in a National Park, Gorah is a premier lodge set in the heart of Addo National Park. It is home to the densest elephant population on earth, providing arguably the best elephant viewing in South Africa whilst also being the domain of a wealth of other wildlife and bird species.

Arriving at the Gorah Manor House, you are greeted by an attentive staff. Check-in and proceed to your luxurious tented suite. Its romantic ambiance recalls the golden era of safari in the early 1900s, yet with the comfort and meticulous service associated with Africa's finest game lodges.

While your ranger readies the 4X4 safari vehicle you have a brief period of time to quickly freshen up, prior to afternoon tea. Afterwards, depart on a game drive, ending with sundowner drinks in the bush.

Following your return, enjoy dining by candle light in the elegant dining room, or on the veranda overlooking the waterhole. The sounds of the bush create a magical air of peace and tranquility, broken only by the splashing of water as the animals arrive to drink under the cover of darkness.

Overnight at Gorah Elephant Camp - Addo National Park.

DAY TWO - Gorah Elephant Camp (Full Day)

Depart on your early morning game drive of 2-2.5 hours in open vehicles, tracking elephants and wildlife in the cool of the morning. Return to the lodge for breakfast, after which you have the remainder of the day at leisure. Lunch is served in the Manor House.

After breakfast and check out, a two-hour drive takes you from the game park to the Port Elizabeth Airport. Your driver awaits to take you back to the ship, docked an hour and a half away in Durban Harbor.

Day 4 -Today an exploration of the 200 meter long ice caves is planned. The tunnels in the iridescent blue ice make for a surreal experience. Then guests will visit the Russian base Novolazarevskaya before being picked up by special 4x4s for their return to Whichaway Camp.

Day 5 -This day will be spent at Atka Bay. To get there we take the Basler BT-67 to fly for two hours to reach an Emperor Penguin colony. Spend the day photographing the approximately 6,000 Emperor Penguins before flying back to Whichaway Camp.

Day 6 -Using special 4x4s we will drive to explore and climb a nunatak in the vicinity of the base. Depending on the level of fitness and willingness to exercise, you can either go accompanied by expert guides to take an arduous, multi-level climb or a gentle walk to the summit. A special picnic at a magnificent viewpoint will be completed by vistas of the frozen icebergs on the coast.

Day 7 -An early morning flight with the Basler BT-67 will land after 5 hours at 83 degrees South on the High Polar Plateau. While the plane is being refueled, there is a chance to stretch one's legs and do a walk. A further two hours of flying will lead to land very close to the South Pole. We will see the South Pole Marker and visit the American science base for an exclusive tour of this outstanding facility.

During the return, we land at 83 degrees for an overnight in a camp.

Day 8 -After breakfast, we continue our return flight to Whichaway Camp. The five hours of flight will again show the immense expanse of Antarctica.

The evening will end with a three-course dinner and champagne.

Day 9 -Our final full day in Antarctica will be used to go by special 4x4s to see a magnificent cliff overlooking giant ice waves. Experiences today can include kite-skiing, climbing, abseiling, treks and an exciting 'rope walk' that is technically easy.

Day 10 -In the morning, preparation for the flight back and depart from Wolf's Fang runway in the afternoon, bound for Cape Town. After arrival, transfer to Cape Grace Hotel for an exclusive dinner commemorating your adventure in Antarctica and overnight at the Cape Grace Hotel.

Day 11 -Enjoy breakfast before getting ready for your onward journeys. End of program.
