Phuket

Phuket is one of the region's economic powerhouses—millions of tourists visit the island every year, enjoying the many delights that are offered in this established resort island. Phuket is a modern, vibrant island with more than 6 million annual visitors, a number that is only increasing year-to-year. If you've never been to Phuket, you will likely love it; returning visitors will find a new island that eagerly greets its next wave of tourism. View more

Koh Phuket is linked to the mainland by a causeway, and the rest of the world by an international airport. Its indented coastline and hilly interior make the island seem larger than its 48-km (30-mile) length and 21-km (13-mile) breadth. Before tourism, Koh Phuket was already making fortunes out of tin mining and rubber plantations. Then backpackers discovered Koh Phuket in the early 1970s. Word quickly spread about its white, sandy beaches and cliff-sheltered coves, its plunging waterfalls and impressive mountains, its cloudless days and fiery sunsets. This love of Phuket has brought serious problems. Entrepreneurs built massive resorts, first in Patong, then spreading out around the island. Before the tsunami there was no easy way to navigate the island, which was plagued by horrendous traffic and overdevelopment. Some would say Phuket was being loved to death. Now visitors may be taken aback in some parts by ongoing overdevelopment, but there are also places where you can isolate yourself from the rest of the island. Even though it may seem like every other business here is a tour operator or dive shop or tailor or jeep rental or pub, there's a lot to love about the island. The beaches are still beautiful, and this remains a top destination for snorkeling and diving (with more than 180 registered dive shops). The island offers some of the most exclusive resorts and spas in the world, yet the food, drink, and accommodations are cheap compared to most visitors' home countries (though Phuket is quite expensive by Thai standards).

Phan Nga bay and Yai island by speedboat

Experience the scenic splendour of Phang Nga Bay and its nearby islands during this panoramic, full-day sightseeing excursion via speedboat.

Phuket, Phang Nga Bay National Park

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive to a local jetty. Upon arrival, embark a speedboat for the panoramic, approximately one-hour boat-ride to the exquisite Phang Nga Bay National Park. As you plie the calm waters, experience views not seen on bigger boat tours. The geological features of the bay are an incredible site, formed by fault movements that pushed the massive limestone blocks up from the bottom of the sea. The result is over 40 islands of towering karst that create this unique and breath-taking scenery. Sheer cliffs, overhangs and caves typify the topography, and after millions of years, they are covered in verdant vegetation.

James Bond Island, Panyi Village, and Hong and Panak Islands

Next, a stop is made at James Bond Island, where the famous James Bond movie, The Man with the Golden Gun, was partially-filmed. Some free time is made available during your visit to browse for souvenirs. Afterward, continue past a mangrove swamp and grotto cave before riding south of the park, and past the wonderful rock formations of Hong, Panak and other islands. A highlight of your picturesque cruise is a visit to Panyi Village, where more than 200 houses are built on the stilts and wooden sidewalks provide a walkway between the humble residences. Some time is also made available here to browse for mementoes of your visit.

Siam Niramit, Thai Dinner and Show

Following your visit to this themed village, proceed for a delicious Thai dinner at Siam Niramit's elegant restaurant, which overlooks the Thai Village of the Four Regions. After dinner, proceed to the theatre for an unforgettable and entertaining three-act show featuring over 100 performers, lavish costumes and stunning set designs. Enhanced special effects and the world's most advanced technology are used to produce a very realistic, stimulating and inspiring experience. Of special note is Act II, which offers a unique look at how the Thai people conceive the concept of heaven and hell.

While heaven is so beautiful with divas and angels (literally) flying around, hell is quite scary indeed. Watch as drinkers are forced to imbibe from a cauldron of boiling water, and adulterers compelled to climb horribly spiky thorn trees. The stage setup and special effects alone are spectacular and very realistic, with amazing costumes.
