Flightseeing over Tahiti Nui

What better way to experience the awesome beauty of Tahiti Nui (Big Tahiti) then from a helicopter? A short transfer takes you from the pier to the airport, where your flightseeing excursion begins.


The 15-minute flight makes for a thrilling experience. Views of the circular volcanic land mass, dominated by 6,700-foot (2,042-metre) Mount Orohena, and beautiful deep valleys are indeed breath-taking. The vibrant blue water hugging sandy beaches is the icing on the cake. Headphones allow listening to the pilot's commentary.


Afterwards, transportation has been arranged to take you back to Papeete and the ship.


Please note:  This tour for guests continuing on to the following cruise must be reserved or cancelled 72 hours prior to arrival in Papeete to avoid penalties.  It involves a 15 minute flight in a 5-passenger helicopter with a four-guest minimum per heli.  A minimal amount of walking and two big step up and down to get into the helicopter are required.  This tour is not suitable for guests who utilise a wheelchair and those under the age of 8 years.  Operation of this tour is weather dependent and it may be cancelled on short notice.  Flight time and sights may vary depending on weather conditions.  Due to balance and weight limitations, as well as individual safety and comfort, guests must provide their body weight to the Shore concierge office a minimum of 48 hours prior.  Seating is based on weight distribution and assigned at the pilot's discretion.  Remember to bring your camera and sunglasses.

Papenoo Valley & Waterfall by Jeep for In-transit Guests

Some of Tahiti's most beautiful spots are accessible only by a four-wheel-drive vehicle. Journey into the island's heart as you travel unpaved trails up the Papenoo Valley. Take in views of tropical forest, graceful waterfalls and dramatic basalt cliffs. Enjoy a refreshing swim in a forest pool and refreshments served at one of the island's scenic lookouts.


Four-Wheel-Drive Safari

Meet your guide and four-wheel drive vehicle at the pier and travel to the scenic east coast of Tahiti and the famous Papenoo Valley. After a short coastal drive, turn inland at the mouth of Papenoo River and begin the ascent up the largest valley on the island. The view of the surrounding mountainsides carved by centuries of erosion and covered with rich, thick, multi-green rain forest will awe you. The adventurous drive crosses rivers and includes photo stops of the numerous waterfalls. Take a swim in one of the natural pools of the river (if water levels permit) before stopping at a panoramic viewpoint for photos.


Retrace your path down the valley and stop at the famous surfing and black-sand beaches of Papeenoo before returning to the ship.


Please note: This tour is offered to in-transit guests continuing on to the following cruise. It requires a moderate amount of walking, most of which is on unpaved, uneven and sloped paths. It is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. The jeeps travel on unpaved roads and paths that may be bumpy and muddy, therefore this tour is not recommended for guests with neck or back conditions or those not prepared for mud and wet splashes. There are no changing facilities at the forest pool; passengers should wear their swimsuits under their clothing and bring a towel. Water or aqua shoes are recommended. Insect repellent is suggested.

A place to stop off in the circuit around the island of Tahiti, the public gardens of Vaipahi offer wonderful views of water, light and exquisite vegetation. This haven of peace of over a hectare invites you to take pleasant walks among its natural treasures. Nearly 75 different plant species composes its abundant flora, planted close to the basins and waterfalls which flow directly into Lake Vaihiria.


Arahoho Blowhole

Your tour continues with a scenic, 45-minute ride to the Arahoho Blowhole, one of the island's natural attractions. It was formed thousands of years ago by a lava flow that, once cooled, created a channel; the result is roaring plumes of water shooting into the air. After watching this powerful display of nature, your drive continues north to Point Venus.


Point Venus

Today Point Venus is home to a picturesque Victorian-era lighthouse and a monument to the crew of the Bounty, who also landed at Venus Point. Capt. James Cook observed the transit of the planet Venus in 1769 at Point Venus, Tahiti's northernmost extremity. The low, sandy peninsula covered with ironwood (casuarina) trees is about 2km (1 1/4 miles) from the main road. Captains Wallis, Cook, and Bligh landed here after anchoring their ships offshore, behind the reef in Matavai Bay. Cook made his observations of the transit of Venus across the sun in 1769 from a point between the black-sand beach and the meandering river that cuts the peninsula in two.





From here, a journey of approximately 45 minutes takes you back to Papeete and the International Airport. You have the option to dine on your own or return to the airport drop-off area at the airport, where you collect your luggage and independently head to check-in for your flight.


Please note: This tour is offered in the morning to guests disembarking the ship with flights after 3:00 p.m. and the tour will end at the airport. It requires a moderate amount of walking at the museum; however, most areas visited are wheelchair accessible. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair; however, guests must be able to embark and disembark the coach via the bus steps. Operation is subject to minimum participation. This tour will stop at the airport to allowing departing guests to debark the coach.

The Museum of Tahiti and the Islands (or Musée de Tahiti et des Îles) was opened in 1974 and now represents one of the world's most important repositories of cultural and natural studies concerning the Polynesian archipelago. It includes collections covering nature and anthropology, habitations and artifacts, social and religious life and finally the history of French Polynesia.

Next, proceed to Arahurahu which is the only marae (traditional temple) in all of Polynesia that has been fully restored, and it is maintained like a museum. It is Tahiti's best example of ancient Polynesian temples and meeting places, and its exhibit boards do a good job of explaining the significance of each part. These structures were used by Polynesians for ceremonial gatherings, such as religious rituals, important weddings, celebrations of military victories, enthronement of kings.

Vaipahi Gardens

A place to stop off in the circuit around the island of Tahiti, the public gardens of Vaipahi offer wonderful views of water, light and exquisite vegetation. This haven of peace of over a hectare invites you to take pleasant walks among its natural treasures. Nearly 75 different plant species composes its abundant flora, planted close to the basins and waterfalls which flow directly into Lake Vaihiria.


Following this stop, journey to the International Airport. The coach brings you to the departure drop-off area at the airport, where you collect your luggage and independently head to check-in for your flight. Arrival at the airport is approximately 13:30. Afterwards, the coach continues the 10-minute journey to the pier, where any accompanying in-transit guests conclude their tour.
