Silversea Luxury Cruises A Newport, Rhode Island

Newport, Rhode Island

Established in 1639 by a small band of religious dissenters led by William Coddington and Nicholas Easton, the city by the sea became a haven for those who believed in religious freedom. Newport’s deepwater harbor at the mouth of Narragansett Bay ensured its success as a leading Colonial port, and a building boom produced hundreds of houses and many landmarks that still survive today. These include the Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House and the White Horse Tavern, both built during the 17th century, plus Trinity Church, Touro Synagogue, the Colony House, and the Redwood Library, all built in the 18th century.British troops occupied Newport from 1776–1779, causing half the city’s population to flee and ending a golden age of prosperity. The economic downturn that followed may not have been so great for its citizens but it certainly was for preserving Newport’s architectural heritage, as few had the capital to raze buildings and replace them with bigger and better ones. By the mid-19th century the city had gained a reputation as the summer playground for the very wealthy, who built enormous mansions overlooking the Atlantic. These so-called "summer cottages," occupied for only six to eight weeks a year by the Vanderbilts, Berwinds, Astors, and Belmonts, helped establish the best young American architects. The presence of these wealthy families also brought the New York Yacht Club, which made Newport the venue for the America’s Cup races beginning in 1930 until the 1983 loss to the Australians. The Gilded Age mansions of Bellevue Avenue are what many people associate most with Newport. These late-19th-century homes are almost obscenely grand, laden with ornate rococo detail and designed with a determined one-upmanship.Pedestrian-friendly Newport has so much else to offer in a relatively small geographical area— beaches, seafood restaurants, galleries, shopping, and cultural life. Summer can be crowded, but fall and spring are increasingly popular times of the year to visit.

Newport Cliff Walk & Breakers

Experience the splendid coast and mansions of Newport on-foot during a picturesque, half-day walking tour of this historic city.

Cliff Walk

Depart the pier on-foot with your guide for the short walk to the start of the Cliff Walk trail. Upon arrival, begin your guided stroll along a portion of the spectacular Cliff Walk trail. With New England's rocky shore and crashing surf on one side and Newport's most extravagant mansions on the other, the Cliff Walk remains one of the top attractions in Newport.

The Breakers

Next, proceed for a guided tour of the Breakers, commissioned by tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt II, Chairman and President of the New York Central Railroad. One of Newport's most elegant mansions, the Breakers was inspired by the 16th-century palaces of Genoa and Turin. This 70-room, Italian Renaissance-style villa was designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt, who directed an international team of craftsmen and artisans. Completed in 1895, the mansion is situated on a 13-acre estate overlooking a spectacular view of the rugged Atlantic Coastline. At the conclusion of your tour, stop by the gift shop before commencing the short walk back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 1.25 miles (two kilometres), at times over uneven surfaces and inclines, with numerous stairs to negotiate on the Cliff Walk, six steps to enter the Breakers, six steps from the foyer to the Main Hall and a flight of stairs to the second floor. A narrow elevator is available at the Breakers to access the second floor. This tour is recommended for guests in good physical condition, and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear lightweight, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection and a light jacket or raincoat from the ship. The tour sequence may vary.

Newport Scenic Drive

Explore the rich history and splendid architecture of Newport during this picturesque sightseeing excursion through the 'City by the Sea'.

Colonial Section

Depart the pier in a coach for the scenic drive through Newport. Along the way, explore the historic district, which features fine examples of colonial, Federal, and Victorian homes, many of which are designated as National Historic Sites. Other historic landmarks to be seen include Trinity Church, Redwood Library, and the Gothic Church of Saint Mary's, where Jacqueline Bouvier married Senator John F. Kennedy.

Ocean Drive

Next, your drive continues along the world-famous, ten-mile (16-kilometre) Ocean Drive, a coastal road that is renowned for the rugged beauty of its spectacular coastline.

Bellevue Avenue

From here, proceed to Bellevue Avenue, where wealthy industrialists of early-20th-century society built their grand 'summer cottages'. Pass by the opulent mansions of the Vanderbilts, Astors and Morgans, many of which have been beautifully preserved by the Newport Preservation Society.

Your tour concludes with a drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking for approximately 15 metres (50 feet) and is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair who can get on/off the coach with minimal assistance or that of their travelling companion. We suggest guests wear weather appropriate clothing, comfortable walking shoes, binoculars and water from the ship, sunscreen and lightweight rain jacket in case of rain. We suggest to book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Depart the pier in a mini-coach for the scenic drive through Newport. Kennedy.

Touro Synagogue

Stop at the John L. Loeb Jr. Visitors Center at the Touro Synagogue, the oldest acting synagogue in the United States. In 1790, the Hebrew Congregation of Newport received a letter from George Washington emphasizing the American citizen's right to religious liberty, which has remained an important value of the United States to this day. More recently, the Loeb Visitors Center was built in celebration and remembrance of the importance of the separation of Church and State and religious freedom. Time will be afforded here to explore the Loeb Center, followed by a 30 minute presentation inside the Touro Synagogue.

At the completion of your tour, you may opt to remain in town for independent sightseeing and shopping or return back to the tender pier via motorcoach. The walk back to the pier is approximately 10 minutes.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking and is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair. We suggest you book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Sailing the Newport Harbour

Sail away aboard the Adirondack II, an 80-foot schooner and enjoy the lovely coastline surrounding Newport Harbour. Newport has played host to some of the world's major sailing events and is often referred to as the sailing yacht capital of the world.

Your guide will meet you at the pier for a short approximate 15-20 minute walk to Bowen's Wharf, where you'll step aboard the Adirondack II, an impressive 80-foot sailing schooner. Sit back and relax amongst the mahogany trim and teak decks as your crew raise the sails and you set off.

Admire the surrounding scenery as you head through Newport Harbour, passing by Fort Adams and down the east passage of Narragansett Bay as far as Castle Hill Inne, before turning around and sailing back. Look out for interesting landmarks such as Hammersmith Farm, the former Summer White House of John F Kennedy. Your Captain and crew will regale you with stories and historical facts of the area.

During your sail, a glass of Mimosa, wine or beer will be served.

At the conclusion of the sail take a short walk back to the ship to re-join the ship.

Please Note: This tour requires a minimal amount of walking for approximately 15-20 minutes at a leisurely pace and approximately 7 steep steps to access the restrooms on the lower deck therefore, this tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. This tour is weather dependent however it will still run in light rain therefore, guests will receive a poncho and the boat will still go out. The Adirondack II may be substituted with an alternative boat with minimal notice available. Approximate time on the water is 1.5 hours.
