Cathedral Grove

Next, proceed to Cathedral Grove, where trees tower 200 feet and form a dense canopy of fragrant pines. Upon arrival, take in the pristine natural beauty and serenity of Cathedral Grove during a self-guided stroll through the park's old-growth rainforest.


Coombs Market

Your final stop is at the Coombs Market. One of Vancouver Island's landmark attractions, the market features a small herd of friendly local goats busily grazing on the thick sod roof overhead. Not only are they a joy to observe, the goats are a practical solution that keeps this Norwegian-inspired building looking neat and trim. During your visit, some free time is made available to browse the crafts and artwork, and learn about the history of this early-20th-century town. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Depart the pier for a scenic, 1.5-hour drive through Nanaimo City and the beautiful Cowichan Valley, which is renowned for its award-winning vineyards. Take a step back in time during this leisurely heritage walking tour through Nanaimo, the third-oldest city in British Columbia.

Nanaimo and Bastion

Depart the pier for an interpretive guided walking tour through Nanaimo. Learn about the city's colourful past during visits to historic landmarks that include the Bastion. Built in 1853 by the Hudson's Bay Company, it has been used as a fort, jail, store and a museum. The Bastion was constructed without the use of nails, yet has been moved three times during its legacy.

Downtown Historical Areas

Next, proceed to the downtown area, where your walking tour combines three major historical routes; the Coal Connection, Harbour Connection and Railroad Connection. At the conclusion of your scenic and informative walking tour, return to the pier on-foot.

Nanaimo City and Surrounds

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 1.5-hour drive to Port Alberni. En route, pass through Nanaimo's Historical District, and by the breath-taking Cathedral Grove and Cameron Lake.


Port Alberni Locomotive Tour

Upon arrival in Port Alberni, proceed to the restored 1912 Railway Station and board the open-sided rolling stock, which is pulled by a 1929 Baldwin steam locomotive. The track winds through the city of Port Alberni and surrounding forests during your narrated, 35-minute rail journey to Canada's only steam-operated sawmill.


Sawmill

This restored National Historic Site dates from 1926, commemorates the history of logging and saw milling in British Columbia, and includes a replica of a 1928 log carriage. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 1.5-hour drive back to the pier.
