Silversea Luxury Cruises A Mytilene, Lesbos

Mytilene, Lesbos

Built on the ruins of an ancient city, Mytilini (so important through history that many call Lesvos by the port's name alone) is, like Lesvos, sculpted by two bays, making its coast resemble a jigsaw-puzzle piece. This busy main town and port, with stretches of grand waterfront mansions and a busy old bazaar area, was once the scene of a dramatic moment in Greek history. Early in the Peloponnesian War, Mytilini revolted against Athens but surrendered in 428 BC. View more

As punishment, the Athens assembly decided to put to death all men in Lesvos and enslave the women and children, so a trireme set sail to issue the order. The next day a less vengeful mood prevailed in Athens; the assembly repealed its brutal decision and sent a double-manned trireme after the first one. The second trireme pulled into the harbor just as the commander of the first ship finished reading out the death sentence. Just in time, Mytilini was saved.

Enjoy the scenery and history of the island and ouzo during this half-day tour highlighting the culture and traditions of the island.

Depart the pier for the drive by coach through the old town of Mytilini. Along the way, see the Byzantine Castle in the background and the fine architecture of many old mansions. While heading south towards the picturesque village of Plomari, admire the simple and pure beauty of the landscape.

Vrana Olive Press Museum

On the way, stop at Papados village, one of the most important villages of the island with a long tradition in olive-oil production. Once here, you have the opportunity to visit the Vrana Olive Press Museum which was one of the first steam-powered factories on Lesvos as well as in the Aegean. It was built in 1887 by Nikolaos Vranas - grandfather of the great poet Odysseas Elytis. In its heyday, the olive press was a major industrial facility. Its external appearance and layout, in complete harmony with the monumental aesthetics of the time, reflect-in all areas-the owner`s vision, to build a lasting enterprise.

Plomari Village

After your visit of the museum your tour continues to Plomari, which has been the island's centre of the cultural and economic activity for many decades. It is most famous today for its distilleries, which provide, perhaps, the best ouzo in Greece. The architecture of the town is exemplified with its giant old mansions, antique factories and historic olive presses. Here, visit the cultural house-centre located in the building of an old oil and soap factory and walk in the narrow cobbled streets of the village with their numerous kafenia (traditional coffee shops).

Ouzo-Distillery of Varvagiannis

In the beach area of Plomari, Agios Isidoros, visit the ouzo-distillery of Varvagiannis. The distillery has a museum section and a production section. Visit both sections of the distillery and experience the methods of 'creating' real ouzo, now and then. You also have the chance to taste the Varbagiannis ouzo, among the best ouzo in the world, before re-boarding your coach and returning to the pier.
