Silversea Luxury Cruises A Moorea

Moorea

Moorea is called the "sister island" of Tahiti and its proximity—just 19 km (12 mi) away across the Sea of Moon—has assured a steady stream of both international and local visitors. Many Tahitians have holiday homes on Moorea and hop over in their boats or take the 30-minute ferry. The draw is South Seas island charm and a relatively slow-paced life. Moorea is an eighth of the size of Tahiti but packs all the classic island features into its triangular shape. View more

Cutting into the northern side of the island are the dramatic Opunohu Bay and Cook's Bay, the latter backed by the shark-toothed Mt. Mouaroa and home to many resorts and restaurants. Between the two bays majestic Mt. Rotui rises 2,020 feet (616 meters) and steep, jagged mountain ridges run across the island. From the Belvedere lookout there are awesome views of these bays and mountains, including the tallest peak—the thumb-shaped Mt. Tohiea reaching 3,960 feet (1,207 meters) into the clouds. Moorea is ringed by a coral reef enclosing a beautiful and quite narrow lagoon. Unlike other islands in the Society group, Moorea has only a couple of motu (islets) and they are located off the northwest corner. The island's rugged peaks and deep bays are said to be the inspiration for James A. Michener's mythical isle of Bali Hai, although historians dispute this claim. It's also believed to be the "birthplace" of the legendary overwater bungalow: a trio of Californian guys who came to Moorea in the 1950s and became known as the Bali Hai boys reportedly dreamt up this unique style of hotel room. Today there are seven resorts and about 24 smaller hotels and pensions, acres of pineapple plantations, and one of only two golf courses in French Polynesia. Moorea is an easy island to explore by car. The one coastal road is just 61 km (37 mi) long, and the best part of a day is needed to travel the road and stop off at the villages, bays, little churches, and cafés along the way and to travel into the interior to the Belvedere lookout and the marae (ancient temples). The lagoon and bays can be discovered on organized excursions that may include a picnic lunch on one of the motu at the island's northwest corner. There are also small motorboats for hire for a half or full day, with no license required. You won't find too many tracks of endless white sands on Moorea; however, the top resorts have lovely man-made beaches and the lagoon-side pensions and lodges always have at least a little patch of sand.

Perched above the water on stilts, over-the-water bungalows offer a one-of-a-kind escape. They are iconic, thatch-roofed symbols of a tropical paradise. Moorea is Polynesia's second-most popular tourist attraction after Bora. Located a mere 12 miles (19 kilometers) west of the island of Tahiti, Moorea is a triangular shaped island encircled by a lagoon of translucent green, fringed by an azure blue Polynesian sea. It is rumored that James Michener based his mythical, idealized island, Bali Hai on Moorea. And it is easy to see why. Many people have described Moorea as the most beautiful place on earth. Here, you'll find the real South Seas' experience - a casual, barefoot existence amidst white sand beaches and multi-hued lagoons surrounded by jagged mountains and volcanic spires that reach into the clouds, while below, valleys are blanketed with the colours that one only finds when tropical climates and rich, volcanic soils meet.

Venture ashore for the night on Silversea's Mid-Voyage Land Adventure that begins in Moorea and concludes in Papeete and a wonderful stay in an overwater bungalow in between. The story is yours to write.

DAY ONE - Moorea

Begin your adventure by tendering ashore. Depending on where the ship is anchored, your drive to the hotel might be 10-30 minutes. Check in at the Hilton Moorea Lagoon (check-in time: 2:00pm). Nestled between two bays on the heart-shaped island of Moorea and set against a beautiful mountain backdrop, the Hilton Moorea Resort & Spa is an ideal setting for a relaxing overnight stay. The resort's white sandy beach is pure bliss and the scenic lagoon is teeming with tropical fish and a gentle water playground for guests.

The afternoon is yours to spend at your leisure. A 3-course dinner is served at the hotel this evening.

Overnight at the Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa - Moorea

DAY TWO - Moorea / Papeete

Awake to the rays of the sun and sparkle of the sea as it dances through your window. Have a morning swim or sip your coffee just soaking in the ambience. Make your way to breakfast as you wish.

At the appointed time check out and embark on a 30 foot (9 metre) long outrigger canoe that will take you on a trip to discover the submarine beauties of Moorea. You can store your luggage at the hotel's reception desk. After a swim in the turquoise lagoon, get acquainted with the rays, even touch and feed them, and if you are lucky see black-tipped sharks. Visit the carved volcanic rocks, forming a lagoon gallery of 4.6 foot (1m 50 cm) high sculptured Tikis that lie beneath the surface of the crystal clear water. During the return journey, stop at an islet to fish and taste pahua, a delicious Tahitian shellfish. Take part in the preparation of the famous "poisson cru" or raw fish salad served with coconut milk.

Lunch will be served on the beach including seafood, salads and exotic fruits. After lunch you can relax and appreciate this small paradise, or go snorkeling in the natural aquarium situated opposite the beach site.

Return to the Hilton Moorea Resort in time to be picked up for your transfer to the ferry pier. Papeete is just 28 miles (44 kilometres) away. Enjoy a relaxing 30 minute ferry ride to Tahiti and a short transfer back to the ship that awaits your return.

Please note: This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure requires a minimal amount of activity; the snorkeling is optional and at your discretion. Guests must be able to get in and out of the boat without assistance. Changes in ferry timings are outside of Silversea's control and may cause changes to the above described itinerary. Anticipate warm and humid weather with a cool breeze in the evening. Attire is resort casual. Bring a bathing suit sunhats, sun block and sunglasses as they are imperative. Remember to bring your camera and binoculars. This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure brings you close to nature; insects and other environmental exposure should be anticipated; marine life may be present in the waters around the bungalows.
