LIPARI ISLAND

The largest and most developed of the Aeolians, Lipari welcomes you with distinctive pastel-color houses. Fields of spiky agaves dot the northernmost tip of the island, Acquacalda, indented with pumice and obsidian quarries. In the west is San Calogero, where you can explore hot springs and mud baths. From the red-lava base of the island rises a plateau crowned with a 16th-century castle and a 17th-century cathedral.

Lipari & Pizza Demonstration

Indulge your senses with the scenic beauty and flavours of Lipari during a sightseeing drive around the island, and a visit to a local restaurant to learn the secrets to making Sicilian-style pizza.

After tendering ashore, depart for a leisurely walk of approximately 20-30 minutes along Lipari's main street to reach the coach parking area. From here you will begin your guided sightseeing drive around the island.

Lipari Island Tour

During your drive, stops are made at the most panoramic viewpoints to take in magnificent vistas of some of the other islands of the archipelago, including Vulcano, Salina and Panarea. Witness the immense stretches of clean, sparkling sea, jagged coastlines and a pallet of colour that includes lush green vegetation, black, red and grey volcanoes, and yellow rocks and beaches. Other viewpoints encountered during your drive offer splendid views of the other Eolian Islands on a clear day.

Lipari has a very long and distinguished history. The Aeolian Islands have a place in mythology, and certainly they were inhabited as far back as 5,000 BC. The island has a rare and valuable resource: black volcanic obsidian, used for knives and sharp implements.

Pizza-Making Demonstration

Next, proceed to a local pizzeria to observe the owners as they enthusiastically demonstrate how to make traditional Sicilian pizza. During the demonstration, you can try your hand at making your own pizza pie according to your own personal tastes. Afterward, you are served your creation accompanied by local Malvasia wine and other Eolian delicacies, including cookies.

Following your visit, re-board your coach and return to the parking area, then walk back to the pier and tender to the ship.

Please note: This tour involves a minimal amount of walking. However, upon disembarkation, a leisurely 20-30 minute walk along the main street is required to reach the coach parking area. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing, flat shoes and sun protection.

Lipari Island Tour

Upon arrival at the coach parking area board your coach for a picturesque sightseeing drive around the island. Along the way, stops are made at the most panoramic viewpoints to take in magnificent vistas of some of the other islands of the archipelago, including Vulcano, Salina and Panarea. Witness the immense stretches of clean, sparkling Tyrrhenian Sea, jagged coastlines and a pallet of colour that includes lush green vegetation, black, red and grey volcanoes, and yellow rocks and beaches. Other viewpoints encountered during your drive offer splendid vistas of the other Eolian Islands on a clear day.

Lipari Town and Archaeological Museum

Next, proceed to the castle area for a guided walking tour. Built by the Spaniards in 1500, this fortification features massive ramparts that enclose the Cathedral and Aeolian Archaeological Museum. After walking up to the Castello, your tour commences with an exterior visit to St. Bartolomeo Church, then the archaeological area and Aeolian Museum. The museum is comprised of five sections; Prehistoric, Classical, Epigraphical, Minor islands, and Volcanological. Explore the most important areas, including a large collection of some of the most valuable relics excavated in the islands since 1946.

Following your visit, a brief walk takes you back to the pier area, which is near the main shopping area. Some time is made available for you to browse the shops before commencing the approximately 30-minute stroll back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 0.8 miles (about 1.3 kilometres), at times on cobblestone and uneven surfaces and steep inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and steps to access the museum. Guests unable to ascend the steep, uphill road leading to the museum may want to stay in town and explore on their own following the island drive. Some sections of the museum may be closed due to restoration work. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Lightweight, comfortable clothing, flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended. Proper attire is required to enter the cathedral; shorts and bare shoulders are not permitted. On Sunday mornings, church holidays and during weddings, tour groups are not allowed inside churches during services; guests may have a chance to visit the church independently.

The natural harbour of Lipari town is dominated by a convenient rock out-crop, this was an obvious place for early settlers to build their homes and fortifications. Walking up to the town's citadel you can see excavations revealing many levels of history. Discover Lipari's exquisite beauty and ancient past from up-close during this delightful walking tour, and a visit to the Archaeological Museum.

Meet your guide at the pier area and begin your walking exploration into an ancient past.

Lipari City and Castle

Church, Theatre and Archaeological Museum

Continue for exterior visits to St. Bartolomeo Church, the area's archaeological site and Theatre. From here, proceed to the Aeolian Archaeological Museum. Vulcano Island & Boat Trip

The island of Vulcano appears in the early myths of the ancient Greeks and also ssimilarly the Romans believed that Vulcano was the chimney of the god Vulcan's workshop and therefore named the island after him. Explore the pristine natural beauty and unique therapeutic properties of Vulcano Island during this scenic boat cruise and island tour.

After tendering ashore, meet your guide and embark on a private motorboat for a cruise to Vulcano Island. Your route passes the beautiful Lipari Coast, and then proceeds to the west coast of Vulcano to see the Faraglioni, the Grotta del Cavallo, the Spiaggia di Ponente and Vulcanello before arriving at Vulcano Island.

Vulcano Island

The most peculiar characteristic of Vulcano is its plateau, the most expansive of all the Aeolian Islands. Formed by lava, banks of tuff and quaternary deposits, the plateau is furrowed by deep valleys and surrounded by hills that fall towards the sea. On the high slopes of the island, the panorama is picturesque and wild. Vulcano Island was once home to three craters. One of them has been eroded by the sea, and presents an interesting cross-section of a volcanic cone featuring lava flows and stratifications of pyroclastic material.

Take a brief tour of the quaint shops and cafés of the small village before stopping by the pier for a stroll, a swim or an opportunity to enter one of the thermal wells from which a sulphurous steam rises. The wells are comprised of salt water and clay mud with a very high sulphurous content that prohibits the growth of pathogens. As a result, the thermal waters combined with the mud baths have an enormous therapeutic value in the treatment of various diseases that include skin, joint and respiratory problems. Soaking in the strong-smelling sulphur baths is popular with many visitors, followed by a cleansing shower or a swim in the balmy sea.

Following the visit, return to your boat and cruise back to Lipari, with an opportunity to take a dip in the crystal-clear sea en route.

Please note: Guests are advised to wear a swimsuit under a cover-up, and bring sunscreen, a hat, beach towel and sunglasses. Guests opting to take a mud bath are advised to wear dark-coloured swimwear and refrain from wearing jewellery, as the sulphur has a chemical reaction. Please be advised that the sulphurous water may cause eye irritations. This tour involves a minimal amount of walking; walking at Vulcano Island is at the discretion of each guest. There is a cost of 2 Euro per person to bathe in the sulphurous mud. A minimum number of guests are required to operate this tour, which is also dependent upon prevailing weather conditions. Refreshment will be served on the boat ride.
