Las Palmas, Canary Islands

Las Palmas is a long, sprawling city, strung out for 10 km (6 miles) along two waterfronts of a peninsula. Though most of the action centers on the peninsula's northern end along the lovely Las Canteras beach, the sights are clustered around the city's southern edge. Begin in the old quarter, La Vegueta, at the Plaza Santa Ana (don’t miss the bronze dog statues), for a tour of interesting colonial architecture. View more

Then make your way into the neighboring quarter of Triana, a treasure trove of small shops and cafés and restaurants. It's quite a walk from one end of town to the other, so at any point you may want to hop one of the many canary-yellow buses. Buses 1, 2 and 3 run the length of the city.

Charming Villages

Discover the spiritual heart of Las Palmas during this scenic, half-day excursion to Terror and Arucas. Terror is a place of pilgrimage for all the residents of Gran Canaria, as the municipality holds in its Basilica the statue of the Virgen del Pino, Patron of the Diocese of the Canary Islands. The city of Arucas is a district that offers important architectural and urban assets. The city centre, declared a site of historic-artistic interest, is a place visitors must not fail to see.

Terror

Depart the pier for the approximately one-hour drive to Terror. Considered by many to be the loveliest place on Gran Canaria, Teror features red-tiled, whitewashed houses with graceful patios and traditional carved balconies. Located in the main plaza, the church you see today is the third to be built on the same spot since the 15th century. Outside, ten gargoyles stand guard on the sides of the church; inside, the main features are the vast Baroque altar and the richly clothed, wooden carved figure of the Virgin Mary. According to the legend, in 1481, a vision of the Virgin appeared in a pine tree to local shepherds. Since that time, the Basilica has played a very important role to the community. In 1914, Pope Pius XII proclaimed her patron saint of the Island and the small town of Teror became the religious capital of the island. Re-board your coach for the drive to Arucas.

Arucas

The idyllic setting of setting of Arucas is created by the dazzling brightness of its white houses, which stand in sharp contrast with the dark profile of its turreted church. Arucas is home to numerous landscaped parks and gardens, though undoubtedly the one most worth seeing is the Jardin de la Marquesa (Garden of Duchess). This beautiful private botanical garden is home to more than 500 different species of plants from 5 continents.

During the visit there, some time is made available to relax, sip a refreshing beverage, taste some canary tapas and admire the extensive collection of plants.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 1km (.62 miles). This tour would be suitable for guests in a wheelchair but guests have to be able to transfer from chair and negotiate steps on/off bus. An inside visit is not included at the church in Arucas. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing, walking shoes and sun protection.

Firgas & Azuaje Hiking Tour

If you are an adventurer, nature enthusiasts or photographer, set your sights and cameras on the unspoilt beauty of Gran Canaria's environs on this energetic excursion that takes you off the beaten path and into the island's rugged interior.

This exhilarating adventure begins with a 45-minute drive into the island's heart to the charming village of Firgas for a guided tour of its historic centre.

Firgas

Dating back to 1488, Firgas is famous for its production of sparkling mineral water. But in the 15th century the town was known for its gofio, or cornmeal. During your walk see the Molino del Conde, a working gofio mill from the 16th century, and witness how the force of water helps crush the corn.

Azuaje Valley

Start your hike into the lush valley of Azuaje, breathe in the fresh air and fill your senses with scenic beauty along the narrow canyon trail. As part of the Forest of Doramas, the area is home to the island's last remaining laurel trees. This is the perfect setting for a rustic picnic so relax in your stunning surroundings with a sandwich, fruit and water.

Another remnant of the area's past can be found in the ruins of Balneario de Azuaje. Once a thriving spa, it was believed that the nearby spring held therapeutic properties. Prized for its idyllic setting, the health resort was a popular retreat in the 19th century. The property was left to ruin following the Spanish Civil War and World War II but, today, it can still be admired for its old elegance set against the valley's wild vegetation.

Upon the return to Firgas, a refreshing soft drink and a savory tapa is served before driving back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of walking for approximately 5 miles (8km), at times over uneven, gravel and inclined surfaces. This tour is recommended for guests in good physical condition, and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair.
