Silversea Luxury Cruises A Kabara Island

Kabara is part of the Lau Islands of the Eastern Group archipelago of Fiji (to the east of the main island). The island is takes up just 12 square miles and holds a population of 700 in four villages. Those living here are noted for the craftmanship of their wood carving, traditionally of wood from the Vesi tree. Vesi wood grows natively on Kabara, but poorly regulated commercial deforestation has stripped the island of this wood, leaving less than 10% of the island covered with Vesi trees. View more

A program of reforestation has started, but this is a long-term solution as Vesi trees take 70 to 80 years to mature. Like other islands in the northern part of the Lau Group, Kabara is a high island originally formed by volcanic activity and so has a rocky, tree-lined topography with high elevations. The island is surrounded by a brilliant blue lagoon, ideal for swimming and snorkeling.
