Silversea Luxury Cruises A Isle of Rum

Isle of Rum

The Isle of Rum is a Special Protection Area for Birds, a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Special Area of Conservation, and has 17 nationally important ancient monument sites. More than 10,000 years ago, the north shore of Loch Scresort was settled, making it one of the oldest human settlement sites in Scotland. In the late 19th century, Kinloch Castle was built on the Isle of Rum by the Bullough family as a grand hunting lodge. View more

Eventually the island was sold to the Nature Conservancy with the aim to revert to its natural state. Rum is also home to 60,000 pairs of Manx Shearwater and some 50 pairs of White-tailed Eagles. Another interesting animal on the island is the Rum pony, which is a Highland pony that has remained very close to the ancestral breed because of the island’s isolation.
