Silversea Luxury Cruises A HUSAVIK

HUSAVIK

The town of Húsavík sits below Húsavíkurfjall mountain on the eastern shore of Skjálfandi bay. Just above the town is lake Botnsvatn, a popular place for outings. The lake is just the right size for a nice hike around it. The lakes surroundings are rich in vegetation and bird life and trout is said to be abundant, though small. Húsavík harbour lies below the bank right in the heart of town. The harbour once boasted a large fishing fleet, bustling with the activity of fishermen. View more

It still serves as a fishing harbour but today's activity revolves more around the successful whale watching businesses. The first organised whale watching excursions in Iceland started from here in 1995. Since then, whale watching has become a major attraction and Húsavík continues to be the leading destination for whale watching. In addition to the tours, a fascinating whale museum is located right by the harbour. Húsavík is considered to be the oldest settlement in Iceland. The Swedish explorer, Gardar Svavarsson, spent one winter there in 870 AD during which time he built himself a house from which the settlement derives its name.

Excursões em HUSAVIK

Discover the unspoilt treasures of northern Iceland during this panoramic, full-day sightseeing excursion.

Dettifloss Waterfall

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 1.75-hour drive to the amazing Dettifoss. Europe´s most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss is approximately 144 feet (about 44 metres) high and 328 feet (100 metres) wide, where up to 1,653 tons (1,500 metric tons) of water, mud and sand rumble into Jokulsargljufur. Following your visit, re-board your coach and drive to Skúlastaðir to enjoy traditional Icelandic meat soup

Ásbyrgi

Next, re-board your coach and continue on to the horseshoe-shaped Ásbyrgi, or 'Fortress of the Gods', the result of a catastrophic flood that took place thousands of years ago. Arctic and alpine vegetation abound around a peaceful pond located at the foot of the gigantic cliffs. The river´s original course was dramatically changed during the ancient flood, and has since followed its present course east of Ásbyrgi. After a lunch prepared from the ship, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 50-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 547 yards (about 500 metres), at times over uneven, gravel, muddy, and grass surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes and sun protection are recommended.

Viking Horseback Riding at Saltvík

Discover the stunning landscapes of Iceland's magnificent north in a unique new way during this unforgettable, half-day excursion on horseback.

Húsavík, Saltvík, Horse Farm and Stables

Depart the pier for the short drive to the horse farm, and proceed to the stables. Upon arrival, receive your safety instructions, gear up and mount your purebred 'Viking' horse for a guided, approximately two-hour horseback riding journey through the stunning landscapes of Iceland's magnificent north. Marvel at your local surroundings as you ride from the shores up the hills above the horse farm.

Horseback-Riding Tour

In addition to the typical gaits of walk, trot, canter and gallop, experience riding the 'tölt', the special gate for which this horse is so famous. The tölt is a flowing, four-beat gait where the rider stretches down in the stirrup, sits back and enjoys the sensation of floating. Particularly suited to Iceland's glacial landscape, its secure, high steps allow the Icelandic horse to move easily over rough terrain that would stop other breeds in their tracks. Icelandic horses average approximately 52 inches-56 inches tall (about 13 hands-14 hands).

Return to Stables

Extremely sure-footed, keen and friendly, the horses are very beautiful, with long, shaggy manes and thick coats. A purebred descendant of its Viking ancestors, the Icelandic horse is a proud product of isolation and a thousand years of breeding. Famed for its gentle, friendly disposition and calm manner, they are a delight for anyone to ride. At the conclusion of your tour, return to the stables. Upon arrival, re-board your coach for the short drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves an extensive amount of activity and a moderate amount of walking for approximately 273 yards (about 250 metres), at times over uneven and cobblestone surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and horse. Guests must be able to mount the horse with minimal assistance. This tour is not suitable for pregnant guests, guests with back and/or neck problems, guests with a fear of animals, guests with limited mobility, and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing in layers with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring sun protection and a weatherproof jacket or coat from the ship. Guests under the influence of alcohol or intoxicating drugs are not permitted on the tour. Guests must be at least nine years old to participate on this tour; guests under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Guests must weigh less than 242.5 pounds (about 110 kilograms) to participate on this tour. Operation of this tour is subject to weather conditions. Space on this tour is very limited; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Whale Watching & Whale Museum

Experience the magnificent wildlife and scenery of Iceland during this picturesque, half-day excursion aboard a whale-watching boat.

Skjalfanda Bay and Whale-Watching

Depart the pier for the short, guided walk to the whale-watching boat. After embarking the boat, take a scenic ride along Skjalfanda Bay, one of the premier locales in the world for observing the friendly minke whale. These normally timid mammals have been known to approach the whale-watching boats, and surface right alongside them.

Whales are often encountered within 20 minutes of leaving the harbour, and appear to take as much interest in humans as we do in them. Boisterous, white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises frequently join the party, and sometimes humpback and other large whales are spotted.

Whale Museum

Upon our return to Húsavík, disembark the boat and take a short stroll to the Whale Museum. Here, take an opportunity to learn more about these fascinating, gentle giants of the ocean on your own. Following your visit, commence the short walk back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 328 yards (about 300 metres), with stairs to access the boat ramp and a few steps to negotiate to embark/disembark the boat. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing with flat, closed-toe, rubber-soled shoes and sun protection are recommended. Warm overalls, raincoats, hats, gloves, and blankets are provided as needed. Although frequently encountered on this type of tour, wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. The boat is not exclusive to Silversea.
