Silversea Expedition Cruises A Chennai

Chennai

Madras was the site of the East India Company’s first settlement, founded in 1639 on land given by the Raja of Chandragiri. A small fort was built on the settlement in 1644, and a town which subsequently became known as George Town, in the area of Fort St. George was built north of it. The settlement became independent of Banten, Java in 1683 and was granted its first municipal charter in 1688 by James II. It is therefore the oldest municipal corporation in India. View more

During the 18th and 19th centuries, when the British and French competed for supremacy in India, the city’s fortunes waned.

Chennai's Architecture with an Expert

Led by an architecture expert, set off on our journey that showcases the unique and diverse architecture of Chennai and its evolution over time. Chennai architecture is a confluence of many architectural styles. From ancient Dravidian temples built by the Pallavas, to the Indo-Saracenic style (pioneered in Madras) of the colonial era, to 20th century steel and chrome of skyscrapers.

A first-ranker in the Master's program in Archaeology, Dr. Sethuraman Suresh has been educated in Delhi, Madras and London. This former member of the Executive Committee of the United Nations Youth Organization (Tamilnadu Chapter) and the South Indian History Congress has also been the recipient of several prestigious awards and fellowships - Junior Research Fellowship of the Institute of Archaeology of the Archaeological Survey of India, Travel Grant of INLAKS Foundation, London and Nehru Visiting Fellowship and Small Study and Research Grant of the Nehru Trust for the Indian Collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London amongst many others. Apart from authoring museum catalogues, Dr. Suresh has particularly contributed to the academic world with his well-known research articles, school textbooks, teacher's guidebooks, historical novels and travelogues for children. He currently writes a column for the Children's Section of The Hindu, a newspaper daily and is a consultant with the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH).

Begin this architectural trail from Fort St. George, built by the British as their stronghold. Its 20-foot walls still stand, looming over the centre of Chennai, encircling India's oldest Anglican Church, St. Mary's Church - popularly known as the 'Westminster Abbey of the East'. You also learn about the Fort St. George Museum housed in the same area.

Stop next at the Chennai High Court with its decorative domes and corridors reminiscent of Indo-Saracenic architecture. Built in 1892, the High Court of Chennai is one of the largest judicial complexes in the world. Following this is another building of the same architectural school named after Lord Rippon, who was the Governor General and the father of Self-Government in India. Rippon building today is the seat of the Chennai Corporation, the oldest city Corporation in India.

Before returning to the pier, visit another of Chennai's marvels with your expert - the Government Museum at Egmore.

Return to the pier and re-join the ship.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking with many steps, inclines and distances over flat surfaces. At some sites, depending on traffic and parking conditions, it may be necessary to cross busy streets. Guests will walk around the premises of the government buildings, but will not be able to visit from inside due to security reasons. This tour is not recommended for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Operation of this tour is subject to availability of the expert and as there is one expert only, participation is extremely limited. Guests must book well in advance to avoid disappointment as no additional space is available. Sites may also be crowded and guests need to exercise normal caution. Sunscreen, sunglasses and hats recommended. Photography is prohibited inside the government buildings due to security reasons. Vehicles used are the best available in the city, they will not be of the same standard as vehicles found in the Western countries.

Mahabalipuram - Vision in Stone

Leave behind the modern world for a trip back in time. Travel by motor coach to Mamallapuram - a wonder in stone on this full-day excursion with lunch.

Earlier known as Mahabalipuram, Mamallapuram reflects the glory of the Pallava Emperors, who reached their zenith in the 7th and 8th centuries AD.

Mamallapuram

Your sightseeing here begins with a visit to the open-air museum of sculpture and its breath-taking display of masterful sculpture carved out of solid rock. Relaxing in the shade of the casuarinas it is a mute observer, looking on, at the visitors who come to marvel at the artistic genius of the Pallavas.

Arjuna's Penance

The best known piece de resistance is undoubtedly Arjuna's Penance, or the Descent of the Ganga, the world's largest bas-relief that is 27 meters long and 9 meters wide and one of the masterpieces of Indian art. It is a beautiful composition of hundreds of celestial beings, humans and animals, all hurrying to a natural rock cleft that divides the giant stone canvas.

Mandapams

You also visit the Shore temple and the Mandapams, each a cave scooped from a hillside of solid rock and ornamented pillars and sculptured panels and the Rathams, monolithic rock-cut shrines that have inspired generations of South Indian builders.

Durga & Tiger Caves

Continue on to the Durga Cave, located in the Mahishasuramardini Mandapam, that depicts Goddess Durga, the amazon, astride a lion battling the powerful buffalo headed demon Mahishasura. You will get a chance to see the famous Tiger Cave, which was left unfinished and was meant to be an open-air amphitheater. Sculptured tiger heads frame a tiny stage in a casuarinas grove.

Following your tour re-join the coach for your journey back to the pier stopping along the way at Fisherman's Cove en route for lunch. Built on the ramparts of an old Dutch fort, the snug resort is set amidst whispering casuarina and palm trees.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking involved with some stairs, inclines and distances; however it is not particularly strenuous. This tour is not wheelchair accessible. Proper attire is required to visit the sacred sites. Shorts and short skirts are not allowed, and women must have their shoulders covered. Shoes must be removed prior to entering the temples. We recommend bringing along a pair of thick socks, as the pavement may be hot. Photography is not permitted inside the temples. Vehicles used are the best available in the city, they will not be of the same standard as vehicles found in the Western countries.

Majestic Chennai

This morning you set off for a majestic tour of Chennai, the city that was established by the British as the seat of power and boasts of the 'Splendours of the Raj'.

Your first visit is the Fort St. George, built by the British as their stronghold. Its 20-foot walls still stand, looming over the centre of Chennai, encircling India's largest Anglican Church, St. Mary's Church and the Fort St. George Museum. Today, Fort St. George houses the Tamil Nadu Government Secretariat and the Legislative Assembly.

Drive past the High Court, a magnificent building, reputed to be the finest example of Indo-Saracenic architecture in India. En route to your next stop you drive along the Marina, the shore drive, which every Chennai citizen proudly claims is the second longest beach in the world.

Visit the Bronze Gallery at the Chennai Museum and the celebrated Kapaleeswara Temple.

The shore road takes us to the last stop, San Thome Cathedral said to house the remains of St. Thomas, the Apostle. He was believed to have been martyred, on what is now known as St. Thomas Mount.

Following your tour re-join your coach to return to the ship.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking, with some stairs, inclines and distances. At some sites, depending on traffic and parking conditions, it may be necessary to cross busy streets. This tour is not recommended to guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Sites may also be crowded and guests need to exercise normal caution. Sunscreen, sunglasses and hats recommended. Proper attire is required to visit the sacred sites. Shorts and short skirts are not allowed, and women must have their shoulders covered. Shoes must be removed prior to entering the temples. We suggest bringing along a pair of thick socks, as the pavement may be hot. Guests should carry some local currency for the camera fees at various sites; however, photography is prohibited inside the temple.. Vehicles used are the best available in the city, they will not be of the same standard as vehicles found in the Western countries.

Enjoy an evening at the Madras Club, with an Indian dance performance and cocktails - a perfect way to spend an evening in Chennai!

Tonight, you will be enthralled by the performance of Lakshmi Viswanathan the famous dancer and Artistic Director of the Academy of Arts of India. Taught by the great Guru Ellappa of Kanchipuram, Lakshmi is one of the true representatives of Bharatanatyam - the Renaissance of classical dance of South India, which has its roots in temple traditions. Classical dance in India differentiates itself from traditional Indian folk dances and Bharata Natyam is one of the eight major classical dance forms, which originated in South India over 3000 years ago.

It has three main aspects: 'Natya', the dramatic element where the dancer tells a story expressing various sentiments using subtle facial expressions and hand gestures, 'Nrtta', the abstract dance aspect where the choreography is complex, precise and often very rhythmic - but with no symbolic meaning, and 'Nritya' uses both dance and drama to emphasize the meaning of the lyric and mood of the music. Rhythm is a vital part of this dance, which uses emphatic footwork.

Centuries ago this dance was performed solely by a community of women called 'Devdasis', which literally meant Servants of God. These women brought up by the temple and never married with their life's sole purpose to dance in honour of the temple's presiding deity.

Awarded the highest national award for the arts by the President of India - 'Sangit Natak Academy Award', Lakshmi along with her dance troupe of six dancers and four musicians has performed both in India and abroad. In addition she has taught master classes to dance students and lectured on dance.

Residencies and performances at the Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts, Choreographic presentation at Kresge hall, MIT, Boston, her performance at Jacobs Pillow dance festival, Lee, Massachusetts, choreographic presentation at Singapore at Victoria theatre for SIFAS, master classes at Mark Morris Dance Center, New York, are just a few of her accomplishments. In addition she has written on book 'Bharatanatayam the Tamil heritage' and produced a documentary film 'Poetry of Dance'.

Return to the ship later this evening.

Please note: This tour requires some walking with stairs and inclines, a distance of approximately 265 yards and 10 steps at Madras Club. It is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair, able to walk short distances and get on and off the coach via steps. Vehicles used are the best available in the city, they will not be of the same standard as vehicles found in the Western countries. This tour has limited participation; we suggest you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

There are three main functions which are carried out in public: Kirtan (the singing of hymns), Katha (the reading of the holy book) and Langar (a free community kitchen for all visitors of all religions.)
