CAPE TOWN

If you visit only one place in South Africa, make it Cape Town. Whether you're partaking of the Capetonian inclination for alfresco fine dining (the so-called "Mother City" is home to many of the country's best restaurants) or sipping wine atop Table Mountain, you sense—correctly—that this is South Africa's most urbane, civilized city. Here elegant Cape Dutch buildings abut ornate Victorian architecture and imposing British monuments. View more

In the Bo-Kaap neighborhood, the call to prayer echoes through cobbled streets lined with houses painted in bright pastels, while the sweet tang of Malay curry wafts through the air. Flower sellers, newspapers hawkers, and numerous markets keep street life pulsing, and every lamppost advertises another festival, concert, or cultural happening. But as impressive as Cape Town's urban offerings are, what you'll ultimately recall about this city is the sheer grandeur of its setting—the mesmerizing beauty of Table Mountain rising above the city, the stunning drama of the mountains cascading into the sea, and the gorgeous hues of the two oceans. Francis Drake wasn't exaggerating when he said this was "the fairest Cape we saw in the whole circumference of the earth," and he would have little cause to change his opinion today. A visit to Cape Town is often synonymous with a visit to the peninsula beneath the city, and for good reason. With pristine white-sand beaches, hundreds of mountain trails, and numerous activities from surfing to paragliding to mountain biking, the accessibility, variety, and pure beauty of the great outdoors will keep nature lovers and outdoor adventurers occupied for hours, if not days. You could spend a week exploring just the city and peninsula. Often likened to San Francisco, Cape Town has two things that the City by the Bay doesn't—Table Mountain and Africa. The mountain, or tabletop, is vital to Cape Town's identity. It dominates the city in a way that's difficult to comprehend until you visit. In the afternoon, when creeping fingers of clouds spill over Table Mountain and reach toward the city, the whole town seems to shiver and hold its breath. Meanwhile, for all of its bon-vivant European vibe, Cape Town also reflects the diversity, vitality, and spirit of the many African peoples who call this city home. Cape Town has grown as a city in a way that few others in the world have. Take a good look at the street names. Strand and Waterkant streets (meaning "beach" and "waterside," respectively) are now far from the sea. However, when they were named they were right on the beach. An enormous program of dumping rubble into the ocean extended the city by a good few square miles (thanks to the Dutch obsession with reclaiming land from the sea). Almost all the city on the seaward side of Strand and Waterkant is part of the reclaimed area of the city known as the Foreshore. If you look at old paintings of the city, you will see that originally waves lapped at the very walls of the castle, now more than half a mile from the ocean.

Cape Town & Table Mountain

No visit to Cape Town is complete without a trip up Table Mountain, the city's most celebrated landmark.

Depart from the pier and travel up Kloof Nek, the saddle between Table Mountain and Lions Head, to the Lower Cableway Station. Here, board the Swiss-engineered Rotair cable car and ascend from the Valley Station 1,190 feet (363 metres) to the Mountain Station. The journey from the base to the summit takes just under 4 minutes and there are spectacular views as the floor of the car rotates 360 degrees during the ascent and descent.

Table Mountain gets its name from the flat topped central massif of the mountain, which viewed from the city, is surrounded by Devil's Peak on the left, Lion's Head on the right, and Signal Hill in the foreground. They form a sort of amphitheatre that encloses the city centre and some of the older suburbs. Other earlier suburbs are on either side of the chain of mountains, which run like a spine through the Cape Peninsula, from Table Mountain to Cape Point - the cape from which Cape Town derives its moniker.

From the summit, the natural protected area stretching from Signal Hill to Cape Point has been managed under the custodianship of the National Parks Board. This area has one of the highest concentrations of endemic plant and animal species in any area of its size, containing a staggering 2,285 plant species, more than that of the entire United Kingdom.

Re-board the cable car for the descent, and begin the return to the ship via a short orientation tour of the city of Cape Town.

Please note: This tour requires a minimal amount of walking and it is suitable for guests with limited mobility and those who utilise a wheelchair, able to embark/disembark the coach via steps and accompanied by someone to offer assistance. Pathways may not be smooth. Wear flat, comfortable shoes and bring a sweater or light jacket if cool, as temperatures atop Table Mountain are less warm. The cable car visit at Table Mountain is strictly weather-permitting. If the cableway is closed, a visit to the South African Natural History Museum is substituted. This tour is not suitable for guests who suffer from fear of heights.

Cape Town & Table Mountain (Tour & Airport / Hotel Transfer)

This tour and airport transfer is offered to guests with flights that depart Cape Town International Airport after 06:00pm and to our guests with hotel reservations at the Victoria & Alfred Hotel.

No visit to Cape Town is complete without a trip up Table Mountain, the city's most celebrated landmark.

Panoramic Cape Town

Depart quayside and enjoy a sightseeing tour of the "Mother City" with its meticulously preserved Edwardian and Victorian buildings. Proceed up Adderley Street, the principal thoroughfare of Cape Town, passing notable buildings which include the Groote Kerk and St George's Cathedral. Also pass by Castle of Good Hope and the City Hall before driving up Kloof Nek, the saddle between Table Mountain and Lions Head, to the Lower Cableway Station.

Table Mountain

Ascend from the Valley Station 1190 feet (363 metres) to the Mountain Station 3477 feet (1,060m) in a Swiss engineered Rotair cable car. The journey from the base to the summit takes just under 4 minutes where you will enjoy spectacular views as the floor of the car rotates 360 degrees during the ascent and descent.

Hotel Drop-Off

Pass by the impressive Cape Town Stadium before continuing to the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront Complex; our first drop-off point.

Airport Drop-Off

For guests continuing on to the Cape Town international Airport, first enjoy some free time at leisure or last minute shopping and lunch (at your own expense) before re-boarding the coach for the approximate one hour drive.

Please note: This tour and airport/hotel transfer is offered to guests with flights departing from the Cape Town International Airport after 06:00pm or those whose ultimate destination is a Silversea Hotel. This tour requires a moderate amount of walking and it is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Guests must be able to embark/disembark the coach via steps with little to no assistance. We recommend guests wear flat, comfortable shoes and bring a sweater or light jacket if cool, as temperatures atop Table Mountain are less warm. The cable car visit at Table Mountain is strictly weather-permitting. If there is cloud cover, the visibility from the summit is very limited. If the cableway is closed, guests will be taken to the summit of Signal Hill to enjoy the views and visit the South African Natural History Museum. Tour's operation is subject to minimum participation. This tour is not recommended for guests who are afraid of heights. Queues at the Lower Cable Station can be longer than usual on busy days. In order to avoid congestion, the order of sites may vary.

Chapman's Peak & Scenic Drive

Take in the views of the Atlantic seaboard, the southern Peninsula and Chapman's Peak on this scenic and memorable half-day panoramic coach tour, considered to be one of the best marine drives in the world.

Depart the pier and begin this awe-inspiring look at Cape Town's coastline with a scenic drive along the Atlantic coast, passing through Sea Point, Bantry Bay, Clifton and Camps Bay. Stop at Maiden's Cove to enjoy the magnificent views onto Camps Bay Beach and the Twelve Apostles, before continuing along the coastal road, past the upmarket suburb of Llandudno, and on towards the fishing village of Hout Bay.

From here you will travel along one of the world's most spectacular routes, Chapman's Peak Drive, with its numerous look out points, which offer magnificent views over the ocean towards Hout Bay and the Sentinel. The road, carved out between 1915 and 1922 hugs the near-vertical face of the mountain. At the time it was constructed, this roadway was regarded as a major feat of engineering. Even today, the drive along this beautiful coastline takes your breath away.

Pass the pristine white sands of Noordhoek Beach, before continuing over the scenic Ou Kaapse Weg (Old Cape Road), taking in the views over the southern Peninsula, Cape Flats, and False Bay.

Head back to the city via the M3 motorway, passing the University of Cape Town, Rhodes Memorial, Mostert's Mill and the famous Groote Schuur Hospital en-route.

Please note: This panoramic coach tour requires no walking; however, guests must be able to get on and off the coach via steps. The road along Chapman's Peak Drive is extremely steep, narrow and winding. This tour is not recommended for guests with a fear of heights. Should Chapman's Peak be closed, the tour will re-route via Constantia Nek & Boyes Drive.

This estate is recognized as a leading wine estate in South Africa, and has a history going back over 300 years. Next, re-board your coach and continue on to historic Stellenbosch. The second-oldest town in South Africa, it is known as the 'town of oaks'. Upon arrival, proceed for lunch at a gourmet restaurant. After lunch, re-board your coach and take a picturesque drive through Stellenbosch Town en route to a visit to a final estate. Here, sample their wines and award-winning, handcrafted cheeses. At the conclusion of your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately one-hour drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 492 yards (about 450 metres), at times over uneven and natural surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and at the wine estates. The tour sequence may vary.

Heli flight & Wine Tasting at De Grendel Estates

Experience a gorgeous scenic flight across Table Bay to the Wine Valley of Durbanville and one of the best wine estates in the region, De Grendel. De Grendel means "the latch" in Dutch - this farm was historically the gateway on the route to the inland settlements of Durbanville and Stellenbosch which had to be opened to traverse the Tygerberg.

Upon being greeted at the pier, take a short transfer to the helipad at the Waterfront and view a short safety briefing before take-off.

Enjoy the scenic flight across Table Bay to the Wine Valley of Durbanville - one of the smallest wine regions in South Africa. Few places on earth offer such a spectacular outlook. Nestled atop Tygerberg Hill, surveying its surroundings with unparalleled 270 degree panoramas, De Grendel showcases Table Mountain, the city of Cape Town and the seaboard all in one landscape. Just 20 minutes from the city, this dramatic expanse of land offers perspective and accessibility.

Relax and immerse yourself in the wonders of the landscape while enjoying a wine tasting before flying back to the helipad at the Waterfront.

Your tour concludes with a short transfer back to the pier.

Please Note: This tour requires a moderate amount of activity and is not suitable for guests with limited mobility or those who utilise a wheelchair. Minimum age requirement is 6 years old; however guests must be 18 years old to consume alcohol. We suggest guests wear light comfortable clothing and comfortable walking shoes. This tour is strictly weather dependent and may be cancelled at any time for the safety of our guests. Seating on the helicopter is weight balanced and not all guests may get a window seat. Wine estates are closed Saturday afternoons and all day on Sundays. Guests must sign a waiver to participate.

Depart the pier and follow the route skirting the slopes of Devil's Peak to your first stop, Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden.

Kirstenbosch Gardens

One of the world's most famous botanical gardens, Kirstenbosch Gardens is spread over 1383 acres (560 hectares) on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain and contains more than 8500 species of indigenous plants. Enjoy a leisurely stroll through the gardens, soaking in the beauty surrounding you. Take some time to browse through the curio shop before departing for your next destination.

Groot Constantia Estate

From Kirstenbosch, travel through the prestigious suburbs of Bishopscourt and Constantia into the region where South Africa's wine industry began more than three centuries ago to your next stop at Groot Constantia Estate. This is the oldest wine making centre in South Africa and it is here that you will be given a guided tour of their cellars followed by a wine tasting of their renowned product. Groot Constantia Estate also boasts one of the most magnificent Cape Dutch Homesteads. Once the private home of Dutch Governor Simon van der Stel; the Manor House is a fascinating blend of the West, East and Africa, incorporating European ideas, Asian craftsmanship and African materials.

Next, continue to the summit of Signal Hill which connects Kloof Nek to Lion's Head. Views from the high summit at 1148 feet (350 metres) are nothing short of spectacular. Signal Hill rewards visitors with views of Table Mountain, the City, Cape Town Harbour, Table Bay, Robben Island, the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, Cape Town Stadium and beachfront suburbs of Mouille Point and Sea Point.

Signal Hill is also one of the only places in the world where critically endangered Peninsula Shale Renosterveld (PSR) vegetation can still be found. It used to be the dominant ecosystem of the Cape Town City Bowl. However, urban growth has now covered most of this ecosystem, and along with a tiny patch on Devil's Peak, Signal Hill has the only surviving sample of this vegetation in the world.

Stellenbosch & Wine-Tasting

Stellenbosch is the capital of the Cape Winelands and was named after its founder, Governor Simon van der Stel who discovered the broad fertile valley of the Eerste River in 1680. In 1685, it was just the second town to be founded in South Africa. Today Stellenbosch is a major university town, characterized by Cape Dutch-style architecture and streets lined with oak trees, some of which have been declared national monuments. The reason most visitors come to Stellenbosch is to sample the wonderful wines of the area. There are over 200 estates that offer wine tasting in Stellenbosch. The estates are impressive and ornate, with grand manor houses and beautiful grounds.

From the pier, a one-hour journey takes you to Stellenbosch, the heart of the Cape's heritage and hospitality.

After an orientation drive through Stellenbosch, enjoy an hour at leisure to explore the town on your own. Pay a visit to the Stellenbosch Museum, which comprises four different houses depicting different eras - Schreuder House, 1709; Bletterman House, 1788; Grosvenor House, 1800 to 1830 and the OM Bergh House, 1850 (optional and for your own account). Alternatively, you may wish to browse through the variety of curio shops.

After this visit, stop at one of the wine estates in the Stellenbosch area to enjoy a wine tasting and gain a glimpse of the fascinating skills practiced in the cellar. Return to Cape Town harbour along the N2 national road.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking, some of which is at your discretion. There are steps at some of the wine estates. Depending on which estate is visited, this tour may not be suitable for guests in wheelchairs. This tour is not recommended to guests with limited mobility.

Here you board the Swiss engineered Rotair Cable Car and ascend from the Valley Station 1,190 feet (363 metres) to the Mountain Station. The journey from the base to the summit takes just under four minutes, and there are spectacular views as the floor of the car rotates 360 degrees during the ascent and descent.

The adjoining Huguenot Memorial Museum focuses on the genealogy of the Huguenot families. Your morning of touring concludes at a local wine estate, where a light lunch, with wine awaits.

Stellenbosch

After lunch, travel to Stellenbosch or 'Town of Oaks', the second oldest town in South Africa, founded by Governor Simon van der Stel in 1679. It is a university town famous for its carefully preserved architectural heritage, which includes examples of Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian styles as seen on Dorp Street, which is lined with houses, cottages and shops. Rows of oaks and open spaces, where jagged lines of trees etched against white walls diffuse the heat of summer, transform the streets into soft, shady tunnels. The oaks have been proclaimed national monuments.

After an orientation tour through this lovely town, from free time is afford for you to explore further on foot. Browse the shops, stroll through the town, or if you wish, visit the Stellenbosch Museum (optional and on your account), which comprises four different houses depicting different eras (Schreuder House, 1709; Bletterman House, 1788; Grosvenor House, 1800 to 1830 and the OM Bergh House, 1850).

At the appointed time, re-join the group at the coach for the drive back Cape Town and the ship.

Please note: This tour requires a moderate amount of walking, some of which is at each guest's discretion. There are steps and uneven surfaces at many of the wine estates. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and not all venues are wheelchair accessible. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring protection from the sun. Depending on the number of participants, this tour may be split into groups that visit different yet comparable wine estates. Order of sites may vary.

DAY 1 - CAPE TOWN / SANBONA

The local Silversea representative is on hand once you have completed all disembarkation formalities. It is recommended to store your main cruise luggage at the Victoria & Alfred hotel here in Cape Town and travel to the safari camp with 1 suitcase and informal clothes.

Meeting you is a local English-speaking tour guide who will accompany you on your transfer to Sanbona Wildlife Reserve. The travelling time is approximately 3 - 3 ½ hours to the main entrance gate through small towns, vineyards and orchards.

Upon arrival at the main entrance gate, you are met by a lodge representative who transfers you to Dwyka Tented Lodge.

Beautifully appointed tents exude an atmosphere of pioneering adventure in a vast and hidden landscape. Dwyka Tented Lodge is surrounded by awe-inspiring rock formations which was once the home of ancient Khoisan hunters. Situated on a horseshoe bend of a dry Karoo ravine, the lodge with 9 luxury tents has a Relaxation Retreat, communal lounge with fireplace and TV, wine cellar and open air boma.

Upon arrival at the lodge take care of check-in formalities and enjoy lunch before relaxing in the comfort of your spacious tented suite.

Sundowner evening drives offer spectacular displays of light as the evening sun sets over the Little Karoo.

Join a late afternoon nature drive accompanied by qualified rangers in comfortable open Landcruisers. Enjoy sipping on a refreshing "sundowner" drink before returning to the lodge for dinner.

After dinner, gaze up at the "Milky Way" and try to spot the "Southern Cross" & "Orion's Belt" before retiring for the night. With the absence of artificial light, the stargazing at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve is phenomenal and amongst the best in Southern Africa.

Spend the day at Dwyka Tented Camp, enjoying the cuisine and embarking on early morning and late afternoon game drives that continue after nightfall.

After an early morning wake up call, gather with fellow travellers for tea, coffee and pastries before departing on a nature drive. Early morning is the best opportunity to see those animals that have been active overnight and are looking for deep shade in which to rest.

During the drive, various species of plants, animals, big game and birds can be seen. Wildlife that may be viewed on the reserve includes lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, white rhino, brown hyena, black-backed jackal, cheetah, hippopotamus, giraffe, springbok, zebra, eland, kuku, red harbeest, black wildebeest, grey rhebok, common duiker, steenbok, klipspringer, grysbok, ostrich and riverine rabbit.

There are various floral kingdoms that make up the Reserve, which include Acacia Thickets, Nama, Karoo, Renosterveld, Succulent Karoo and Central Mountain Fynbos. Succulents are especially varied and fascinating with names like Baby's Bottoms, Ostrich Toes and Pig's Ears.

After breakfast on board, depart Cape Town Harbour for the short drive up Kloof Nek, the saddle between Table Mountain and Lions Head, and onto Lower Cable Mountain Road en route to the lower cableway station.

Table Mountain facts and history

Table Mountain is Cape Town's iconic landmark, and now one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Table Mountain gets her name from the flat-topped central massif of the mountain, which, viewed from the city, is surrounded by Devil's Peak on the left, Lion's Head on the right and Signal Hill in the foreground. They form a sort of amphitheatre that encloses the city centre, and some of the older suburbs. Other earlier suburbs are situated on either side of the chain of mountains, which run like a spine through the Cape Peninsula, from Table Mountain to Cape Point; the cape from which Cape Town gets its name.

Cable-car-ride to the summit of Table Mountain with spectacular, 360-degree views en route

Ascend from the approximately 1,191-foot-high (about 363-metre-high) Valley Station to the approximately 3,477-foot-high (about 1,060-metre-high) Mountain Station in a Swiss-engineered Rotair cable-car. The journey from the base to the summit takes just under four minutes and offers spectacular panoramic views of your surrounds, as the floor of the car rotates 360 degrees during the ascent and descent.

Magnificent summit views from Signal Hill to Cape Point

Upon arrival at the summit, take in a bird's-eye view of the 'Mother City' from atop the mountain. The natural protected area stretching from Signal Hill to Cape Point has been managed under the custodianship of the National Parks Board. This area has one of the highest concentrations of endemic plant and animal species in any area of its size, and is home to a staggering 2,285 plant species; more than the entire U.K.

Descend to the Valley Station, then drive to the Cape Winelands

Upon descending to the Valley Station, re-board your vehicle and transfer to the Cape Winelands and onto the historic, university town and wine region of Stellenbosch.

Lunch and free time in Stellenbosch
