Near the northern end of the Kuril chain the two stratovolcanoes Nemo and Krenitsyn form Onekotan, with 425 square kilometres one of the larger of the Kuril Islands. Both the volcano and Krenitsyna Point at the southern end of Onekotan are named after Piotr Krenitsyn, a Russian Imperial officer in command of an expedition to explore and map the islands of the Bering Sea and Alaska during the mid-18th century. Under good conditions the peak of Krenitsyn, actually an island within the volcano’s caldera, can be seen.
