Silversea Luxury Cruises A GUDVANGEN

GUDVANGEN
GUDVANGEN

Dwarfed by the towering, claustrophobically-close slopes of Norway's most imposing fjord, Gudvangen waits patiently around the scenic bend of the Nærøyfjord. The journey between Gudvangen's small port and Flåm is one of the world's most dramatic, with extraordinary scenery unfolding before your eyes along every inch. Explore one of Norway's two UNESCO World Heritage Site listed fjords, as you cruise sandwiched between emerald slopes on the ferry that traces back and forth. Or, get up close and personal as you part the glassy waters on a kayak. View more

Hardy hikers, meanwhile, will be rewarded with some of Norway's most breathtaking panoramas, as they rise into the majestic mountains, which rocket up everywhere you look. Waiting at the end of the forked tongue of Sognefjord, Gudvangen is a place of remarkable human history that is almost as deep as the gouged fjords themselves. Visit a former Viking village to hurl axes, fire arrows and weave fabrics using traditional methodologies, as you get tactile with the area's storied heritage. Settle in to eat in a restaurant of wooden benches and smoky log fires, where you can taste fresh, flame-cooked salmon. Flåm is also the terminus of the celebrated Flåm Railway, one of the most scenic stretches of railway track laid in existence. The carriages, brimming with old-time charm, trundle past gushing waterfall veils and burbling rivers on their theatrical 12-mile journey. The rail tracks up through the mountain scenery to Myrdal's station, which sits 867 metres above sea level.

Stalheim with Museum & Tvinde Waterfall

Experience the spectacular mountains, fjords, valleys and waterfalls of Norway during this panoramic, half-day sightseeing excursion.

Nærøy Valley, Glashamaren, Oppheim Lake and Tvinde Waterfall

Depart the pier for the scenic drive up the Nærøy Valley. Drive along the Salmon River, then past Glashamaren, where the road winds its way up the mountain in front of you and leads to the Stalheim Hotel. However, your current route takes you through the tunnels that pass underneath the mountain. Leaving the tunnels, continue along the road leading to Voss and Bergen. From here, pass by beautiful Oppheim Lake, then through woodlands and green farmland before approaching the spectacular Tvinde Waterfall. Upon arrival, take a short stroll amidst the fresh air for a closer look at the falls, which cascade down the mountainside. Afterward, re-board your coach and head back towards the Stalheim Hotel, which is perched on a cliff overlooking the Nærøy Valley.

Stalheim Hotel and Museum, and Stalheim and Sivle Falls

After refreshments served at the hotel, head to the terrace for splendid panoramic vistas overlooking the valley, or browse the hotel's shop and many antiques on display. Some time is also made available to explore the owner's open-air museum, which consists of 25 16th- and 17th-century farm buildings gathered from various parts of the country, as well as the stately, beautifully-furnished Lekve House (comment. It will be a guided walk with visit to some houses, guests can not visit the houses themselves). Following your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximately 45-minute drive back to the pier. En route, drive down Norway's steepest road, which has 13 hairpin turns, to the valley below. Waterfalls plunge down both sides of the road; the Stalheim-fall is to the right, and Sivle-fall to the left. Upon reaching the valley floor, follow the Nærøy River back towards Gudvangen.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 875 yards (about 800 metres), at times over uneven, gravel and grassy surfaces and inclines, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach and ten steps at the Stalheim Museum; a ramp is available at the museum. This tour is suitable for guests with limited mobility, but is not wheelchair-accessible nor recommended for guests with a fear of tunnels. Guests are advised to wear warm, comfortable clothing with flat, closed-toe walking shoes, and bring a waterproof jacket or coat. Due to the local climate, most of the coaches are air-cooled. The tour sequence may vary.
