Asakusa Kannon Temple and Nakasmise-Dori

Depart the pier for the approximate 40-minute drive to the Asakusa Senso-ji Temple. Founded in the early-7th century, it is the oldest extant temple in Tokyo. Enter through the Kaminarimon Gate, or 'Nitenmon', which is bedecked (weather-permitting) with a huge red paper lantern. Your guided tour includes a stroll down the Street of Inside Shops, or 'Nakamise-Dori', an alley lined with traditional vendors selling food, souvenirs and handmade crafts.


Imperial Palace

Next, re-board your coach and drive to the Imperial Palace plaza. The palace is located on the original site of Edo Castle, the seat of power for the Tokugawa Shoguns during the Edo Period (1604-1866). A stop is made at the Nijubashi Bridge, a picturesque two-tiered bridge, for a superb photo opportunity of your surroundings.


Meiji Shrine

Continue on to the Meiji Shrine. Dedicated to the Emperor Meiji, the father of modern Japan, this beautiful shrine stands in a dense forest glade in the very heart of Tokyo. The setting symbolises the separation of the spiritual from the worldly. Enter the shrine through twin, 40-foot-tall (12-metre-tall) Torii Gates, one of the largest in Japan. Following your visit, proceed for lunch at a local restaurant.


Ginza

Your tour concludes with a visit to the Ginza, one of the most luxurious shopping districts in the world. The streets of the Ginza are lined with numerous department stores, boutiques, restaurants and bars. This is a great place for window-shopping.


Upon arrival, approximately one hour is made available for browsing the shops at your leisure before commencing the brief drive to the pier.

Kamakura Full Day

Travel to Kamakura, a coastal town that became the political centre of Japan when Minamoto Yoritomo, chose the city as the seat for his new military government in 1185.


The Great Buddha

Depart the pier for the approximate 90-minute drive to Kamakura. Visit Kotokuin Temple and the giant sitting Buddha cast, that was built in the 13th century. With a height of 43 feet (13 metres), it is the second tallest bronze Buddha in Japan, surpassed only by the statue in the Todaiji Temple in Nara. The Buddha was originally located inside a large temple. However, the buildings were destroyed by several typhoons and a tidal wave in the 14th and 15th centuries, so the Buddha now stands in the open air.


Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine

Visit Kamakura's most important shrine whose main pavilion was built by Minamoto Yoritomo in 1185 to celebrate the establishment of the Minamoto Shogunate, the first of the Kamakura government. The shrine is dedicated to Hachiman, the patron god of the Minamoto family and of the samurai in general. An uphill walk with approximately 62 steps is required to reach the main hall of the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. The main hall stands on a terrace at the top of a wide stairway, and contains a small shrine museum displaying treasures such as swords, masks and documents.


After enjoying lunch at a local hotel in Kamakura, spend some free time exploring the shops along Komachi-Dori Street where traditional and moderns shops stand side by side.


Re-board your coach for the drive back to Tokyo.

Explore the highlights and landmarks of Tokyo during a relaxing orientation drive through this bustling city.


Tokyo City Sightseeing

Depart the pier for a scenic sightseeing drive through Tokyo City. Along the way, pass by landmarks that include the Imperial Palace Plaza, National Diet Building and National Guest House, then continue on through the Roppongi area.


Tokyo Tower

Next, a photo stop is made at the Tokyo Tower. At a height of 1,092 feet (333 metres), the Tokyo Tower is the world's tallest self-supported iron structure, and higher than the Eiffel Tower by approximately 30 feet (about 9 metres). Upon arrival at the Tokyo Tower, take the elevator up to the 500-foot-high (152-metre-high) observation platform for panoramic vistas overlooking the city. Following your visit, re-board your coach and commence the approximate 30-minute drive back to the pier.

Rikugien Japanese Garden

Depart the pier for the approximate 30-minute drive to a quiet residential area in northern Tokyo for a visit to the Rikugien Japanese Garden. Feudal lords of Edo, present-day Tokyo, built their residences here during the 17th to 19th centuries. Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, one of the most influential feudal lords at the time, designed this garden, which was completed after seven years in 1695.


Senso-ji Temple and Nakamise-Dori

Next, re-board your coach for the drive to the Senso-ji Temple. Founded in the early-7th century, this is the oldest extant temple in Tokyo. Enter through the Nitenmon or Kaminarimon Gate, which is bedecked, weather permitting, with a huge red paper lantern, to view the shrine. Your guided visit includes a stroll down the Nakamise-dori. 4NT POST-CRUISE: IMPERIAL JAPAN

Step back in time in Kyoto and experience the natural scenery, temples, and shrines, that intermingle with a poignant historical beauty. Visit Kinkakuji temple, Nijo Castle, and Heian Jingu Shrine and feel true aspects of the Japanese culture. Then, take the famous Shinkansen, Japanese bullet train, to Tokyo which is a world renowned metropolis and the center of Japanese economy, politics, and culture. Combine the old and new on this tour of Japan's most legendary cities.

DAY 1 - TOKYO

After collecting your luggage following disembarkation, you are met by our local Silversea representative and transferred to the Imperial Hotel, Tokyo. The Imperial Hotel has been welcoming royalty and celebrities alike for over 100 years. Check-in time is 4pm. The balance of the day, including lunch and dinner is at your leisure.


Overnight at the Imperial Hotel - Tokyo


DAY 2 - TOKYO

After breakfast at the hotel this morning, spend the day exploring several major Tokyo landmarks, most notably the Imperial Palace Plaza and one of the oldest temples in the city, the Sensoji Temple (Asakusa Kannon Temple). At mid-day, enjoy a teppanyaki lunch, where your meal is dramatically prepared on a hot griddle in front of you. This afternoon, visit the Shinto Meiji Jingu Shrine. Dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his consort, Empress Shoken, the shrine was destroyed during WWII, but rebuilt quickly afterward. Then, enjoy the panoramic view of the city available from the top floors of the Tokyo City Hall - with luck; you might even see Mt. Fuji!


Return to the hotel afterward and enjoy the evening. Dinner is on your own.


Overnight at the Imperial Hotel - Tokyo


DAY 3 - TOKYO / KYOTO

After breakfast at the hotel this morning and some additional free time this morning. Depart from the hotel and stop at a local restaurant for lunch before reaching the Train Station for the JR super express high-speed train to Kyoto.


Upon arrival in Kyoto, transfer to the hotel in Kyoto and enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure. Dinner this evening is on your own account.


Overnight at the Westin Miyako Hotel - Kyoto


DAY 4 - KYOTO

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. Today includes a full day of sightseeing including a visit to Nijo Castle to examine the sumptuous paintings and carvings. With parts of the complex dating from the 15th-century, this "fortress" has more in common with a regal estate rather than a defensive structure.


From here, continue on to Kinkakuji Temple, also known as the Golden Pavilion. It was built by Shogun Shikaga Yoshimitsu as a villa in the Muromachi Period in 1397 and later converted to a Zen temple. Though unfortunately, guests are not permitted to enter, the top two floors of this structure are completely covered in gold leaf. Afterward, lunch is served at a local restaurant.


This afternoon's schedule includes a visit to the Heian Shrine, built to commemorate Kyoto's 1100th birthday. From there, continue on to the Kiyomizu Temple - it is centered on Mount Kiyomizu. The main hall and the platform balcony were completely built without the use of nails. Kiyomizu Temple is doing restoration work until 2022.


Return to the hotel at the end of the afternoon. This evening, dinner in a local restaurant is accompanied by a performance of a Maiko Girl.


Overnight at the Westin Miyako Hotel - Kyoto


DAY 5 - DEPART KYOTO

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, later today you transfer to Osaka's Kansai airport for your homeward-bound flight. The hotel's official check-out time is 11:00AM. If your flight is scheduled for late this evening, Silversea can arrange for you to extend your stay for an additional fee.

4NT PRE-CRUISE: IMPERIAL JAPAN

Step back in time in Kyoto and experience the natural scenery, temples, and shrines, that intermingle with a poignant historical beauty. Visit Kinkakuji temple, Nijo Castle, and Heian Jingu Shrine and feel true aspects of the Japanese culture. Then, take the famous Shinkansen, Japanese bullet train, to Tokyo which is a world renowned metropolis and the center of Japanese economy, politics, and culture. Combine the old and new on this tour of Japan's most legendary cities.

DAY 1 - ARRIVE OSAKA / KYOTO

Arriving at Osaka's Kansai airport, you are met and transferred to the hotel in Kyoto. If your flight arrives significantly earlier than 1:00pm, you might consider adding an additional night to your program to insure that you can check in immediately upon arrival. The remainder of the day is at leisure.


Overnight at the Westin Miyako Hotel - Kyoto


DAY 2 - KYOTO

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel. Today includes a full day of sightseeing including a visit to Nijo Castle to examine the sumptuous paintings and carvings. With parts of the complex dating from the 15th-century, this "fortress" has more in common with a regal estate rather than a defensive structure.


From here, continue on to Kinkakuji Temple, also known as the Golden Pavilion. It was built by Shogun Shikaga Yoshimitsu as a villa in the Muromachi Period in 1397 and later converted to a Zen temple. Though guests are not permitted to enter, the top two floors of this structure are completely covered in gold leaf and make for stunning photos. Afterward, lunch is served at a local restaurant.


This afternoon's schedule includes a visit to the Heian Shrine, built to commemorate Kyoto's 1100th birthday. From there, continue on to the Kiyomizu Temple. The main hall, together with the stage, was completely built without the use of nails. Kiyomizu Temple is doing restoration work until 2022.


Return to the hotel at the end of the afternoon. This evening, dinner in a local restaurant is accompanied by a performance of a Maiko Girl.


Overnight at the Westin Miyako Hotel - Kyoto


DAY 3 - KYOTO / TOKYO

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel as well as some free time this morning exploring on your own. The National Museum of Art, Kyoto is a mere half-mile (0.8km) away. You will find a variety of exhibits here include paintings, prints, sculpture, crafts and photography.

Lunch is served at a local restaurant as you make your way to the train station for the JR super express train to Tokyo.


Once in Toyko you will be transfered to the magnificent Imperial Hotel, where royalty and celebrities have been welcomed for over 100 years. The balance of the day, including dinner, is on your own this evening.

DAY 4 - TOKYO

After breakfast at the hotel this morning, spend the day exploring several major Tokyo landmarks, most notably the Imperial Palace Plaza and one of the oldest temples in the city, the Sensoji Temple, also known as the Asakusa Kannon Temple. At mid-day, enjoy a teppanyaki lunch, where your meal is dramatically prepared on a hot griddle in front of you. This afternoon's sites include the Shinto Meiji Jingu Shrine. Then, enjoy the panoramic view of the city available from the top floors of the Tokyo City Hall - with luck you might even see Mt. Fuji! Return to the hotel afterward, and enjoy the evening and dinner on your own.

DAY 5 - TOKYO

Breakfast is included this morning at the hotel. You have several hours at your leisure before the coach departs for the pier for embarkation.
