Excursions in Soller de Mallorca

Vintage Train To Palma

Spend a half-day discovering some of the most scenic parts of Mallorca during this picturesque ride on the Soller Railway, and a visit to Palma. Beginning in 1912 the Soller railway has been running a daily train service along the route between Palma de Mallorca and Soller, without interruption


Soller Village and Train

Depart the pier for the short walk, approximately 15-minutes, to the tram station in the Port of Soller, then board the tram for the ride to the beautiful village of Soller. Upon arrival, board a vintage Soller train. The Soller Railway has been running a daily train service along the 17-mile (27-kilometre) route between Soller and Palma de Mallorca, without interruption, since 1912.


Soller Railway Ride

Your 45-minute scenic journey aboard the Soller Railway is an enchanting voyage highlighted by beautiful panoramic views of the Mallorcan Mountains, orange groves and small, fairy-tale-like villages. Pass through 13 tunnels and numerous bridges en route to Palma.


Palma de Mallorca

Upon arrival, take a panoramic sightseeing drive through this lovely capital city and be introduced to all its beauty.

Afterward, some free time is made available for independent exploration before commencing the approximate 45-minute drive back to the pier.

Valdemossa & Deia

Discover some of the most scenic parts of Mallorca and visit the island's most outstanding attractions during a visit to Valldemossa, the Son Marroig Lookout and the lovely village of Deiá. See amazing beaches, beautiful coves, stunning winding roads and cliff faces; the island of Mallorca has it all


Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate 45-minute drive to Valldemosa, which is renowned for its picturesque setting on the slopes of Mallorca's northern mountain range. Upon arrival, a visit is made to the Carthusian Monastery.


Carthusian Monastery

This 17th-century monastery, also known as 'Cartuja', is famous for its beautiful cloisters and gardens. More importantly, it housed two illustrious guests, composer Frédéric Chopin and novelist George Sand, during the winter of 1838-39. A guided tour of the monastery includes the cloisters, the 18th-century pharmacy, the former monks' cells and the rooms once occupied by the famous couple.


Theatre of King Sancho

Next, proceed to the adjacent Theatre of King Sancho for a brief piano recital of Chopin's music, then stop for a glass of wine or a soft drink at a nearby restaurant. Afterward, re-board your coach for the drive along a winding road and past cliffs more than 1,300 feet (390 metres) high en route to the picturesque village of Deiá. Before reaching Deiá, a photo stop is made at Son Marroig.


Son Marroig

This stunning estate is renowned for its picturesque setting on the slopes of Mallorca's northern mountain range. Formerly the residence of the Archduke Ludwig Salvatore of Austria, the home (now a museum) offers spectacular views of the coastline and Foradada, a locally-renowned rock formation rising from the sea. Leaving Son Marroig, your drive continues on to Deiá.


Deia

Perched on a hillside amidst olive and almond trees, this quaint village with its red-roofed houses has been a favourite among writers and artists for many years. Upon arrival, some free time is made available to explore the village's narrow, winding streets. A visit is then made to the deluxe hotel, La Residencia, where lunch is served at the hotel's famous El Olivo restaurant.

El Olivo is renowned as one of the best and most romantic restaurants in Spain. It has received the Award of Excellence by the prestigious Wine Spectator magazine for four consecutive years.


After lunch in your exclusive surroundings, re-board the coach for the return drive to the pier.

Soller & Tram

Explore the splendid beauty, history and landmarks of Soller during this half-day excursion via tram and on-foot. Soller is an attractive town on Mallorca's north-west Coast and the town lies in a large, fertile, bowl-shaped valley. The valley is famous for its orange groves and terraces of ancient olive trees.

Soller Village

Depart the pier for the short walk, approximately 15-minutes, to the tram station in the Port of Soller, then board the tram for the ride to the beautiful village of Soller.


Church of San Bartolome

Your first stop is at the Church of San Bartolome, originally built prior to 1236, its subsequent modifications blend Baroque, Neo-Gothic and Modernist designs.


Can Prunera Museum

Next proceed to the Can Prunera Museum which boasts a permanent contemporary art collection with works by renowned artists such as Picasso, Miro, Matisse, Basquiat, Rusiñol, Magritte, Leger, and Chillida, as well as local artists of the Bealearic Islands. The museum also has an art gallery and gardens that host concerts and cultural events. Built in the early-20th century, the Can Prunera building is a restored Modernist house and Asset of Cultural Interest. It is adorned with mural paintings in polychrome relief, glasswork, furniture, and a spectacular staircase and façade. On the second floor there were the rooms for the service and a storeroom. But now you will find a collection of contemporary art. There are pictures by Toulousse-Lautrec, Miquel Barceló, Miró, Klimt, Maria Carbonero, and Rafa Forteza.


Gran Hotel Soller and Church of San Bartolome

Next, proceed for an aperitif served at the Gran Hotel Soller. The hotel is located in one of the most characteristic buildings of Soller, a depiction of the village's architecture in the 19th century.


Following your visit, ride the tram back to the Port of Soller. Your tour concludes with a short walk back to the pier.

Panoramic Palma & Winery Cellar

Upon arrival at this beautifully-restored former royal stronghold, you will have a superb view of the Bay of Palma the distant mountains.


La Seo Cathedral

With its huge flying buttresses, the La Seo Cathedral looms over the Parque de la Mar. The dramatic sides of this great edifice rise up in Gothic splendor. The sight has drawn admiration from numerous literary figures, including the French writer, George Sand. A photo stop will be made here before continuing to Santa Maria, admiring the views of the most agricultural part of the island.


Santa Maria Village/Wine Cellar

Your final destination is the well-known cellars of Macia Batle, in the village of Santa Maria. Its 250 acres of vineyards are distributed in the denominations of the region with special emphasis on the rare autochthon Majorcan grapes, not leaving out other traditional varieties. By combining these grapes, the results are beautifully composed wines with unforgettable character. The agreeable sun and microclimate of Majorca join with the soft winds of the Mediterranean to guarantee a top quality wine, something that the Romans keen wine makers, already knew.

Valldemossa & La Granja

The spectacular scenery of Mallorca awaits you as you travel to Valldemossa, a place of marvelous beauty and legendary inspiration, where Frederic Chopin composed some of his finest work. Continue to La Granja and experience an old Majorcan farm and taste a sample of local Majorcan specialities.


Depart the ship and pier area driving roads that provide the most wonderful views of the impressive cliff sides of the north-west of the island.


Mirador of Son Marroig

After approximately 30-minutes, view Sa Foradada, a peninsula of the Tramuntana mountain range, in the municipal district of Deià. Its name is due to the impressive hole that can be seen in it, measuring some 18m (59 feet) in diameter, and which can be seen from various parts of the mountain range. The best place to see this is from the viewpoint of Son Marroig, stop here for a photo opportunity.


Valldemossa

Continue the drive to one of the most beautiful villages of the island, Valldemossa, known for its picturesque setting on the slopes of Mallorca's northern mountain range. Valldemossa is a quiet and traditional town with narrow streets and lanes constructed with blonde stone, as are the houses. Each doorway and street is lined with beautiful green plants and flowers making the town one of the most beautiful in Mallorca. Many doorways of houses feature a religious symbol of Mallorca's patron saint, Saint Catalina Thomàs to protect their houses from harm, a tradition set many years ago.


La Granja

Re-board your coach and make the drive to La Granja to visit La Granja de Esporles, surrounded by beautiful fountains and lush formal gardens, this superb 17th century Majorcan manor house was built by a noble family on the site of a 10th century farm belonging to monks. Free time is given to independently explore the grounds and interior of the house which is now a museum illustrating home-life of two centuries ago. A highlight is the wine cellar, and the opportunity to sample a local vintage wine and some various Majorcan products.


Following your visit, re-board the coach and drive back to the port of Soller and the pier passing through the village of Esporles.

Caves of Drach

Unveil the mystery of Mallorcan pearls during this half-day journey to the village of Manacor, home to the famous artificial pearl industry. Continue to the renowned Caves of Drach and a subterranean classical concert at one of the world's largest underwater lakes.


Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate 1-hour 30-minute drive into the islands interior and the city of Manacor.


Manacor

Manacor is the centre of Mallorca's pearl industry. It was here that Eduard Heusch and family began Majorica Pearls, or 'Perlas Majorica', in the late-19th century. To this day, Majorica Pearls are the industry's benchmark faux pearls. Recognised worldwide for their quality and perfection, Majorica Pearls have such a strong resemblance to natural pearls that often only experts can tell them apart. During a visit to the Majorica factory and showroom, discover the techniques used to create these amazing bijous.


Caves of Drach

Next, re-board your coach for the drive to the Caves of Drach, or 'Cuevas del Drach', located near Porto Cristo. Perhaps as famous as the pearls, the caves were believed to have been discovered in the 12th century. In 1929, a visitor's entrance was built at the caves, and in 1935, the caves' interior was artistically illuminated for the first time. Today, the caves offer a surreal experience to visitors strolling through their ancient rooms. Dramatic lighting highlights the grottoes and silhouettes of immense stalagmites and stalactites.

During your walking tour inside the cave, see formations with names such as 'Snow Mountain', 'The Ruined Castle', and 'Diana's Baths' en route to the shore of Lake Martel, one of the largest subterranean lakes in the world. Here, a short concert of classical pieces is accompanied by the interplay of shadows and light against the water.


Following your exploration of the caves, re-board the coach for the approximately 1-hour 25-minute return drive to your ship in Palma.
