Silversea Luxury Cruises To Sochi

Sochi

The breadbasket of Russia, the Krasnodar Krai is almost the size of Ireland. It's a region where the banks of the Kuban River gave a name (not to mention freedom) to the famous Kuban Cossacks; it is also a land where wheat fields and vineyards chase the horizon and the high Caucasus Mountains meet the sunlit shores of the Black Sea. The region became part of Russia in 1829. View more

Sochi, often called the "Pearl of the Black Sea," includes four districts and stretches for about 90 miles along Russia's southern coast. This area enjoys the northernmost subtropical climate in the world. Nature has been generous to Sochi by creating a unique location where in 40 minutes you can travel between the sunny beaches of the Black Sea and the snow-capped Caucasus Mountains. Since Sochi is Russia's premier summer resort destination, the announcement that it would host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games was seen as ironic, but the winter sports in these parts are also legendary. Sochi is surrounded by striking natural beauty: the Caucasus Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; many caves, which were dwellings of prehistoric people; megalithic tombs (called dolmens); and curative mineral springs. And don't forget all those new luxury hotels and spa complexes underway, set to open in time for the Olympics. Sochi is a sightseer's dream—from monuments to natural attractions, you can spend weeks exploring the region. Top cultural attractions are mostly in central Sochi, while the other districts have more nature sights.

Excursions in Sochi

Stalin's Dacha & Matsesta Spa

Discover the historic sights and unique attractions of Sochi during this visit of Joseph Stalin's Dacha and the Matsesta Mineral Spa known for its therapeutic value.

Stalin's Dacha

Begin your tour with a visit to Stalin's Dacha. Joseph Stalin was very fond of Sochi, and played an important role in its development as a spa resort. He personally oversaw the building of some of the city's spa houses and sanatoria, Russia's version of all-inclusive resorts. Zelenaya Roscha, translated as 'Green Grove', is comprised of a number of large, private dachas, and served as the site of Stalin's former

summer residence. Situated within an old park, the dacha of the 'all nations leader' was built in the 1930s. The interior has been preserved as it was during Stalin's time. During your visit, see the wooden floors, fireplace, private suites, swimming pool, billiard hall, and his wax figure displayed in Stalin's memorial room. At the end of your visit, you are treated to a glass of local wine and snacks served in sitting room.

Matsesta Spa

Then rejoin your coach for the short drive to the most renowned Matsesta Spa located at a short distance from Stalin's Datcha. A secret road used to connect Dacha to Matsesta where Stalin took his curative baths. Its name is of Circassian origin meaning "fiery water", a reference to the hot sulfur springs that have been here since ancient times. Matsesta water, containing plenty of hydrogen sulfide and over

twenty chemical components, has unique medical properties. In 1902 the first standing clinic located in a small building containing only two baths was opened here. The major installations were built in 1950's.

Take a gentle stroll in a shady park to view the mineral springs. Listen to the talk of the local doctor on the treatment system, Matsesta Spa and its mineral water properties, while visiting the main therapeutic building.

Following the visit you will drive back to the port along Kurortny Prospect, the longest street of Sochi, lined with cypresses, laurel and

camphor trees. En route, view the Dendrarium covering an area of 30 acres (12 hectares) and containing more than 1500 trees and bushes

from all over the world.
