Silversea Luxury Cruises To Singapore

The main island of Singapore is shaped like a flattened diamond, 42 km (26 miles) east to west and 23 km (14 miles) north to south. Near the northern peak is the causeway leading to West Malaysia—Kuala Lumpur is less than four hours away by car. It is at the southern foot where you will find most of the city-state’s action, with its gleaming office towers, working docks, and futuristic "supertrees," which are solar-powered and serve as vertical gardens. Offshore are Sentosa and over 60 smaller islands, most uninhabited, that serve as bases for oil refining or as playgrounds and beach escapes from the city. To the east is Changi International Airport, connected to the city by metro, bus, and a tree-lined parkway. Of the island's total land area, more than half is built up, with the balance made up of parkland, farmland, plantations, swamp areas, and rain forest. Well-paved roads connect all parts of the island, and Singapore city has an excellent, and constantly expanding, public transportation system. The heart of Singapore's history and its modern wealth are in and around the Central Business District. The area includes the skyscrapers in the Central Business District, the 19th-century Raffles Hotel, the convention centers of Marina Square, on up to the top of Ft. Canning. Although most of old Singapore has been knocked down to make way for the modern city, most colonial landmarks have been preserved in the CBD, including early-19th-century buildings designed by the Irish architect George Coleman.

For In-transit Guests - Highlights of Singapore

Observe and experience the typical Singapore lifestyle - one that is uniquely different from those found in the rest of Asia - on this half-day informative tour.

Board the coach and leave the pier. Your excursion begins with a visit to the Singapore City Gallery for an overview of how urban planning (including conservation, architecture, civil engineering and building) shapes the way its people live, work and play. Get a bird's-eye view of downtown Singapore from a finely detailed architectural model.

Travel to Toa Payoh, a first-generation New Town built in the late 1960s to solve the acute shortage of proper housing in Singapore. Walk through the Housing Development Board (HDB) Gallery to view a typical layout of the various towns, along with models of the various types of flats in which Singaporeans live. Today, 87% of the population lives in a HDB flat.

Continue on with a stroll through the town centre, where you can mingle with the local people and indulge in a bit of neighbourhood shopping in the many shops selling all sorts of merchandise. View the many communal facilities that make the town self-contained, including a bus interchange' sub-way station, schools, clinics, community centres, parks, a sport stadium, an indoor sports hall, and a swimming pool complex. See the many places of worship existing in close proximity to one another.

Next, take the subway for five-minute drive to Bishan, a second generation New Town, designed and built in early 1990's to accommodate the lifestyle of a more affluent and wealthier population.

There are many obvious contrasts between the first- and second-generation New Towns. The later blocks of second-generation flats are of a more contemporary design, and nearly twice the height of the first-generation flats. The town centre is occupied by a large shopping mall that caters to the shopping and entertainment needs of the whole community. Many of the communal facilities are located near to the shopping mall.

Your final stop is to Singapore latest downtown Icon - The Marina Barrage. Built across the mouth of the Marina Channel, the Marina Barrage creates Singapore's 15th reservoir, and the first in the heart of the city. With a catchment area of 24,700 acres (10,000 hectares), or one-sixth the size of Singapore, the Marina catchment is the island's largest and most urbanised catchment. Together with two other new reservoirs, the Marina Reservoir will boost Singapore's water catchment from half to two-thirds of the country's land area.

The local Silversea escort is on hand to insure that you arrive at Singapore's International Airport for an afternoon flight to Siem Reap with plenty of time to check-in and go to your gate.

Please plan to travel with one small suitcase (maximum 20 kg / 44 lbs) per person. Luggage restrictions on internal Cambodian flights can be quite strict. The balance of your luggage will be held at the Shangri-La and delivered to you for the final night of this program.

As you arrive, the local Cambodian Silversea representative meets you in the public arrivals area of the airport and assists with your transfer to the Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor. This evening, dine at the hotel.

DAY 2 - SIEM REAP (ANGKOR WAT)

Rise and shine for an early breakfast this morning before heading out to the temple complex for a full day of sightseeing. After meeting your guide this morning proceed to the Angkor Wat Temple complex. This 400 square kilometer (nearly 99,000 acres) World Heritage site is replete with temples to both Hindu and Buddhist deities.

NB: All visitors to Angkor Wat must queue at the check-point for a photograph.

Your first stop will be the city of Angkor Thom - a fortified Royal City built by King Jayavarman VII who ruled from 1181 to 1201. The city has five monumental gates and is encircled by a moat 100 meters wide (over 100 yards). In the center of the walled city are the city's most important monuments, including the Bayon Temple. It is a place of narrow corridors, steep flights of stairs and an amazing collection of towers decorated with more than 200 smiling faces.

As you continue through the site, your guide points out the mysterious Terrace of the Leper King, and the Terrace of the Elephants as you make your way to lunch at a local restaurant.

This afternoon spend several hours at Angkor Wat. Dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu in the 12th-century, the temple of Angkor Wat is world famous for its beauty and splendor. It features the longest continuous bas-relief in the world running along the outer gallery wall. A climb to the top, for those who can do it, is well worth it but remember that you must also climb down!

Note: During the visit of the Bakan tower of Angkor Wat temple, visitors are required to wear proper attire, meaning covered shoulders and knees as this temple is still considered as a sacred site (no shorts, miniskirt or short trousers). Children under twelve years old are not allowed to climb up this tower. It will be closed on Buddhist Sabbath Days, Buddhist religious days, four days a month in accordance with the Lunar Calendar.

Return to the hotel at the end of the day and enjoy a dinner at the Café d'Angkor.

Overnight at the Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor

DAY 3 - SIEM REAP (ANGKOR WAT)

Breakfast will be served at the hotel before returning to the temple complex for more exploring and sightseeing. Along with several smaller sites today, you will enjoy visits to Preah Khan - a rambling 12th-century complex similar in layout to Ta Prohm; and Prasat Ta Som - a small, relatively quiet site where nature had taken over and man has reclaimed.

Continue from here to lunch at a local restaurant, followed by visits to the nearby temples of Banteay Srey and Banteay Samre. Be sure to ask your guide to relate the legend of the peasant who became king thanks to his crop of cucumbers! Here again you are visiting a sacred site. Please be prepared with proper attire (covered shoulders and knees, no shorts, miniskirts or short trousers).

Return to the hotel at the end of the day and enjoy dinner at the hotel once again.

Overnight at the Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor

DAY 4 - SIEM REAP / SINGAPORE

Enjoy breakfast this morning at the hotel before meeting your guide for a visit to the vitally important Tonle Sap Lake (weather permitting). A source of income from fishing and aquaculture, you'll find a collection of families who spend their entire lives literally living on the lake.

Lunch is served at a local restaurant. This afternoon, as you make your way back to the airport, stop for a visit to the Artisans d'Angkor and the new Senteurs d'Angkor workshop where more than 100 people - 80% of whom are disadvantaged rural women - are employed.

Your local guide will assist with your check-in at the airport. Upon arrival in Singapore, and after you have claimed your luggage, transfer back to the Shangri-La Hotel for check-in. Dinner this evening is on your own account.
