Silversea Luxury Cruises To Saqqaq

Saqqaq

The small village of Saqqaq, home to less than 200 people, is located in the southwestern part of the Nuussuaq Peninsula in western Greenland. The area boasts a rugged coastline sprinkled with icebergs stranded here after breaking off the nearby Jakobshavn Glacier. The settlement was founded in 1755 as Solsiden, Danish for "Sunny Side”. On the other side of Nuussuaq Peninsula, archaeologists have excavated the remains of an ancient Arctic culture, later named the Saqqaq culture. View more

These ancestral people likely inhabited the area of central western Greenland between 2500 BCE and 800 BCE. Today, Air Greenland serves the village with winter-only helicopter flights between Saqqaq Heliport and Ilulissat Airport. Once the snow and ice melts, the waters of Disko Bay become the primary means of transportation, and a small ferry links Saqqaq with other local communities.
