Silversea Luxury Cruises To Saint Malo

Saint Malo
Saint Malo

Thrust out into the sea and bound to the mainland only by tenuous man-made causeways, romantic St-Malo has built a reputation as a breeding ground for phenomenal sailors. Many were fishermen, but others—most notably Jacques Cartier, who claimed Canada for Francis I in 1534—were New World explorers. Still others were corsairs, "sea dogs" paid by the French crown to harass the Limeys across the Channel: legendary ones like Robert Surcouf and Duguay-Trouin helped make St-Malo rich through their pillaging, in the process earning it the nickname "the pirates' city. " The St-Malo you see today isn’t quite the one they called home because a weeklong fire in 1944, kindled by retreating Nazis, wiped out nearly all of the old buildings. Restoration work was more painstaking than brilliant, but the narrow streets and granite houses of the Vieille Ville were satisfactorily recreated, enabling St-Malo to regain its role as a busy fishing port, seaside resort, and tourist destination. The ramparts that help define this city figuratively and literally are authentic, and the flames also spared houses along Rue de Pelicot in the Vieille Ville. Battalions of tourists invade this quaint part of town in summer, so arrive off-season if you want to avoid crowds.

Excursions in Saint Malo

Dinan & Dinard

Experience the beauty, history and elegance of north-western France during this delightful, half-day sightseeing excursion. The contrasting attractions of Dinan and Dinard are a world apart in appearance that exists within only a 20-minute drive from one another. One, a walled hill town still bristling with fortresses from the 13th century with more than its fair share of wobbly half-timbered houses on ancient streets, and the other a former fishing village that became an elegant and affluent resort in the 19th century, complete with casino.

Dinan

Depart the pier for the scenic, approximately 45-minute drive to the beautifully-preserved walled town of Dinan. Upon arrival at the coach parking area, begin your guided walking tour of the ramparts, towers and timbered houses in this medieval setting. Of special note are the buildings around the Place des Merciers and Old Clock Tower. A short visit is made to the 12th-century Basilica Saint Sauveur, which contains a headstone with the heart of Bertrand de Guesclin, a locally-revered 14th-century knight, who fought battles to expel the English from France. Afterward, some free time is made available to explore your surroundings before returning to the coach parking area.

Dinard

Next, re-board your coach for a delightful drive along the Rance River en route to Dinard and the Breton Riviera. Located on the Rance Estuary, the elegant town of Dinard displays the charm of the Belle Epoque with its unique 'Marine' architectural style. From here, proceed to Casino Beach for a photo stop where along the way you will view an amazing variety of Mediterranean vegetation.

Re-board your coach and commence the approximately 30-minute drive back to the pier.

Please note: This tour involves a moderate amount of walking for approximately 1 mile (about 1.5 kilometres) at times over cobblestone surfaces, with a few steps to negotiate to get on/off the coach. Walking in Dinan is at the discretion of each guest. This tour is not suitable for guests with limited mobility and guests who utilise a wheelchair. DAY ONE - Saint Malo / Bayeux (Audrieu)

Begin the day with a visit to one of the most renowned monuments in France, le Mont St. Michel. The Gothic-style Benedictine abbey dedicated to the archangel St. Michael, and the village that grew up in the shadow of its great walls, is perched on a rocky islet exposed to powerful tides between Normandy and Brittany. Upon arrival at the coach parking area, precede on-foot to the shuttle bus, and then board the bus for the transfer to the village entrance.

Around the base of the mount are the ancient ramparts and a jumble of houses lining the narrow streets. Your guide leads you up the cobbled street and 365 steps to access the famous Abbey. En route, admire the architecture of Mont St. Michel, which was founded in the 10th century; the Abbey was added three centuries later. At its very top gleams the gilded statue of Saint Michel. Upon entering the Abbey, walk up another 197 steps and begin your guided tour of its interior.

After descending back down to the village, lunch will be served in Saint Malo or in a nearby location. Refreshed by your meal, reboard the coach for the 2-hour drive to Bayeux.

Here you will find a charming and dynamic city that is a mere 1,500 years old, having been founded by Romans in the 1st-century. The medieval town centre that you will visit today includes cobbled streets, half-timbered houses and the impressive Gothic Cathedrale Notre-Dame. Stroll along the banks for the Aure River and get a close look at the old restored mills and historic buildings.

Leave the city behind and continue from here to the Chateau d'Audrieu. Entering the gates leads you into the main courtyard of this 18th-century residence. Check-in and experience the refined charm of discreet luxury and the conviviality of a family home. Dinner this evening is served at the hotel.

DAY TWO - Bayeux (Audrieu) / Honfleur

Begin the day with breakfast at the Chateau. Then, board the coach for the drive out to Pointe du Hoc which sits about 200 feet (60 metres) above the sea on high cliffs. The Germans posted long range guns on this naturally protected site to knock out approaching ships. The Allies knew they must overtake and secure the area so that the other landings could be successful. Before dawn on June 6th 1944 about 200 U.S. rangers scaled the cliffs as German forces fired down upon them. After suffering great losses, the soldiers finally reached the top and secured the area only to find that the large guns had been moved to the north near Calais. The site has been left in its condition from that day. You can walk amid bomb craters pocking the white cliffs, go through semi-ruined German bunkers and twisted barbwire fences.

The beaches along this coast were given code names by the allies in preparation for the attack. From west to east are Utah and Omaha (where the Americans landed), Juno (where the Canadians landed), Gold and Sword (where the British landed). Today, you'll drive to Coleville sur Mer and stop at the American Cemetery located just above Omaha Beach. This large park like cemetery was donated to the Americans by the French, and contains over 9000 white marble crosses and Star of David grave markers with the name and home state of each soldier who died on the beaches below while fighting the Germans. A centerpiece of the cemetery is a memorial to those who lost their lives, and to the 1577 missing or unidentified soldiers.

Continue on to to the town of Port en Bessin, where a lunch featuring local specialties will be served.

Heading out in the direction of Honfleur, stop for a visit in Arromanches les Bains. The town of Arromanches was chosen by Winston Churchill as the location of a harbor to be built for the invasion. To build it, 300-foot (91-metre) long cement blocks were floated across the English Channel and sunk in place. Named Port Winston, this harbor and breakwater was over 7 miles (11.2 km) long, and allowed the arrival of over 50,000 vehicles and 500,000 troops in just 6 days time. Today you can see the remains of the harbor from the beach, and get a better view from the bluffs above. While you are here, enjoy your guided visit of the Landing Museum, which uses models and films to explain the landing operations.

At the conclusion of your time at the museum, reboard the coach for the approximately 1.5 hour drive directly to the pier in Honfleur.

Please note: This Mid-Voyage Land Adventure requires an extensive amount of walking and climbing of steps at all sites visited over uneven grounds, making the tour unsuitable for guests with limited mobility or those utilising a wheelchair.
